Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 9, White Sox 8 at California (night game):
A three-run rally in the seventh inning carried the Angels to a 9-8 triumph over the White Sox. The Pale Hose led, 7-6, going into the bottom of seventh, but the Angels tallied three times after two were out. Brian Downing beat out an infield hit and Bobby Grich walked. Downing scored the tying run when second baseman Jim Morrison was unable to handle a grounder by Larry Harlow. The runners advanced on the throw to the plate and after Rick Miller walked to load the bases, pinch-hitter Merv Rettenmund stroked a two-out single.

Tigers 9, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
A six-run explosion in the ninth inning gave the Tigers a 9-3 victory over the Indians. Alan Trammell led off the Tigers' outburst with a walk and came home on a triple by Ron LeFlore. After a walk to Al Greene, a single by Steve Kemp scored LeFlore. The runners advanced on a wild pickoff attempt. Lynn Jones followed with a two-run single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Morales. A double by Lance Parrish and single by Aurelio Rodriguez completed the scoring.

Twins 8, Royals 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Pounding out 13 hits against five pitchers, the Twins thumped the Royals, 8-3. The Twins scored a run in the first inning on a walk to Bob Randall and triple by Ron Jackson and added four more tallies in the second, two scoring on a triple by Jose Morales. A single by Jackson drove home a pair of markers in the sixth stanza.

Red Sox 5, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Bob Stanley pitched the Red Sox to a 5-0 victory over the Yankees. The Red Sox picked up two runs in the second inning on a single by Bob Watson, triple by Butch Hobson and single by Tom Poquette. Hobson connected for a two-run homer in the eighth and Ted Sizemore added a solo round-tripper in the ninth.

A's 6, Brewers 1 at Oakland (night game):
Snapping his personal 18-game losing streak, including 14 in a row this season, Matt Keough pitched a five-hitter for his first victory of the year as the A's posted a 6-1 decision over the Brewers. The A's scored five unearned runs in the sixth inning. One run came in on an error by Brewer shortstop Robin Yount and three on a homer by Dwayne Murphy.

Mariners 1, Rangers 0 at Seattle (night game):
Rob Dressler and Byron McLaughlin combined on a four-hitter as the Mariners blanked the Rangers, 1-0. The lone run of the contest came in the first inning when Julio Cruz drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on an infield out and scored on a single by Willie Horton.

Dodgers 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
A two-run rally in the 10th inning carried the Dodgers to a 5-3 decision over the Braves. With the score 3-3, pinch-hitter Von Joshua led off the 10th with a single and moved to second on an infield out. Steve Garvey then drilled a single that plated Joshua and came home himself on the same play when the throw by Braves' catcher Joe Nolan sailed into center field.

Expos 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Stretching their winning streak to a club-record nine games, the Expos edged the Cubs, 4-3. The deciding run scored in the ninth inning. Dave Cash stroked a two-out single. After Andre Dawson walked, Tommy Hutton lashed a single to drive in Cash.

Reds 6, Giants 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
Although needing relief help, Fred Norman received credit for his 100th career victory as the Reds shaded the Giants, 6-5. After a two-run homer by Mike Ivie gave the Giants a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, the Reds went ahead in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer by George Foster and added an insurance marker in the seventh on a double by Dan Driessen.

Astros 4, Padres 3 at Houston (night game):
Four walks forced home the winning run as the Astros edged the Padres, 4-3, in 10 innings. Joe Sambito drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second. After Terry Puhl drew an intentional pass, Jeff Leonard also strolled on a 3-2 pitch. Enos Cabell then walked on four straight pitches, forcing Sambito home.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
A wild pickoff attempt handed the Pirates a 7-5 triumph over the Cardinals in 11 innings. The Pirates loaded the bases on a double by Omar Moreno, intentional walk to Dave Parker and infield single by Bill Robinson. With two out, Darold Knowles relieved Roy Thomas on the mound for the Cardinals and promptly uncorked a wild pickoff throw past first base into right field, enabling Moreno and Parker to score.
