Orioles 5, Blue Jays 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Doug DeCinces, supporting the five-hit pitching of Dennis Martinez, hit a solo home run in the second inning and two-run homer in the eighth while leading the Orioles to a 5-0 victory over the Blue Jays. This was the fourth shutout and American League-leading 17th complete game for Martinez, who had lost four in a row.

Angels 10, White Sox 9 at California (night game):
The Angels stretched their lead over the idle Royals in the American League West by nudging the White Sox, 10-9, in a game marked by 32 hits. The winning run came in the eighth when Don Baylor singled, advanced to second on Brian Downing's sacrifice and scored on a double by Dickie Thon.

Yankees 3, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
The Yankees pushed across two runs in the 10th inning to subdue the Tigers, 3-1. Bucky Dent singled to start the rally and raced to third on Bobby Murcer's double. Willie Randolph beat out a bunt single, scoring Dent with the tie-breaking run. Reliever Tom Underwood walked Oscar Gamble to fill the bases, then threw a wild pitch that brought home Murcer. Reggie Jackson homered for the Yanks in the fifth inning.

Braves 6, Dodgers 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves turned three singles and two stolen bases into two runs in the third inning and went on to beat the Dodgers, 6-2. Eddie Miller singled and stole second. Jerry Royster followed with a single, scoring Miller, and then stole second before Bob Horner drove in Royster to cap the game-winning burst.

Expos 1, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
The Expos shaded the Cubs, 1-0, for a club record 10th victory in a row when Gary Carter hit a home run with one out in the ninth inning. David Palmer, with late help from Woodie Fryman, outdueled Rick Reuschel to hand the Cubs their seventh loss in a row.

Reds 12, Giants 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
The five-hit pitching of Tom Seaver and Manny Sarmiento and home runs by Johnny Bench, Dan Driessen, Dave Concepcion and George Foster powered the Reds past the Giants, 12-3. Bench hit a three-run homer and Driessen a two-run homer in a six-run outburst in the first inning. Joe Morgan's single and back-to-back homers by Concepcion and Foster gave the Reds three more runs in the second. Rob Andrews hit two homers for the Giants.

Astros 2, Padres 0 at Houston (night game):
With J.R. Richard in three-hit form, the Astros scored on a groundout and a bases-loaded walk to defeat the Padres, 2-0, and cling to their National League West lead. Enos Cabell doubled in the second, advanced to third on a flyout and scored as Luis Pujols bounced out. Bob Owchinko walked Craig Reynolds with the bases full in the fourth for the final tally.

[DH] Mets 5, Phillies 3 (night game) / Phillies 2, Mets 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Garry Maddox drove in two runs with a single in the first inning and sacrifice fly in the third to enable the Phillies to beat the Mets, 2-1, in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader behind the four-hit pitching of Randy Lerch and relievers Ron Reed and Rawly Eastwick. A two-run eighth inning, when Joel Youngblood and Ed Kranepool delivered run-scoring hits, proved decisive in the Mets' 5-3 victory in the opener. Doug Flynn hit a two-run homer in the seventh. Gary Maddox homered in eighth.

Cardinals 8, Pirates 6 at St. Louis (night game):
A two-run error by Phil Garner marked a three-run fourth inning that carried the Cardinals to an 8-6 triumph over the Pirates. Keith Hernandez singled and Ted Simmons was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Tony Scott's double, scoring Hernandez. When Garner booted Jerry Mumphrey's grounder, Simmons scored and Scott came on around as the second baseman made a belated attempt to nail Mumphrey at first base.
