Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Homers by Eddie Murray in the fourth inning and Gary Roenicke in the seventh carried the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox, whose only run came on a circuit clout by Jim Rice. Carl Yastrzemski rapped three singles to boost the Red Sox superstar's career total to 2,998. He also moved into 12th place, ahead of Ted Williams, on the major leagues' all-time list for total bases with 4,885.

Angels 6, Brewers 3 at California (night game):
Although striking out only five, Nolan Ryan tossed a four-hitter and pitched the Angels to a 6-3 victory over the Brewers. Gorman Thomas hit his 39th homer of the season for the Brewers. With the score tied, 3-3, in the seventh, Carney Lansford singled and Dan Ford followed with his 21st homer to send Bill Travers down to defeat. Don Baylor then singled, stole second and scored the final run on a single by Bobby Grich.

Indians 9, Blue Jays 8 at Cleveland (night game):
Overcoming an eight-run deficit, the Indians rallied to gain a 9-8 victory, although the Blue Jays had a grand-slam homer by Rico Carty and also pulled off a triple play. Carty's clout in the fifth inning capped a six-run outburst by the Blue Jays, who added a pair of tallies in the sixth. The Indians, after picking up three runs, loaded the bases in the eighth, but Ted Cox grounded to third baseman Roy Howell, who stepped on the bag to start the triple killing. Howell threw to Luis Gomez for a forceout at second and the relay to John Mayberry at first nipped Cox for the third out. But the Blue Jays were unable to halt the Indians in the ninth. Toby Harrah led off with a homer and, batting for the second time, capped the six-run rally with a single that drove in the winning marker.

Tigers 6, Yankees 0 at Detroit (night game):
Taking over after Bruce Robbins was injured by a line drive in the third inning, Jack Billingham turned in a superb relief performance and completed pitching the Tigers to a 6-0 shutout of the Yankees. The victory was Billingham's 10th, marking the 10th straight year that the veteran righthander had won 10 or more games. Lou Whitaker drove in two of the Tigers' runs with a homer and triple, while Ron LeFlore accounted for another pair with a double.

Rangers 5, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Mickey Rivers doubled in the ninth inning for his third hit of the game and scored on a single by Bump Wills to give the Rangers a 5-4 victory over the Twins. Rivers' run put the Rangers ahead, 5-3, and proved to be decisive when the Twins rallied for a run in their half before Jim Kern struck out rookie Ken Landreaux to save the triumph.

A's 4, White Sox 3 at Oakland (night game):
An error by shortstop Harry Chappas with the bases loaded in the 10th inning enabled the A's to defeat the White Sox, 4-3. Rickey Henderson led off with a triple for his third extra-base hit of the game and, after two intentional passes loaded the bases, Chappas misplayed a grounder by Jeff Newman, allowing Henderson to score.

Royals 6, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Rookie Craig Chamberlain, winning for the fourth time in five decisions, pitched the Royals to a 6-2 victory over the Mariners. The Royals put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning. George Brett beat out a hit to Rick Honeycutt, advanced to second on the losing pitcher's wild throw and scored on a single by Amos Otis. After a pass to Darrell Porter and a sacrifice, Frank White was walked intentionally to load the bases. John Wathan responded with a double, driving in two runs, and another scored on a sacrifice fly by U.L. Washington. Larry Milbourne spoiled Chamberlain's bid for a shutout with a two-run homer in the eighth.

Padres 8, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Staked to a big lead when the Padres scored seven runs in the first two innings, Eric Rasmussen breezed to an 8-0 victory over the Braves. The Padres jumped off with four runs in the first on a single by Gene Richards, a stolen base, double by Paul Dade, single by Dave Winfield and homer by Gene Tenace. Winfield added three runs with a circuit clout in the second and Dade capped the scoring with a single in the sixth.

Cubs 4, Phillies 3 at Chicago (day game):
A double by Barry Foote with one out in the ninth inning scored pinch-runner Miguel Dilone from first base and enabled the Cubs to their snap seven-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Phillies. Jerry Martin singled and gave way to Dilone before Foote delivered his winning hit. The RBI was the third of the game for Foote, who also drove in two runs with a double in the fourth inning.

Dodgers 6, Reds 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
After failing to hold a 5-1 lead, the Dodgers scored on a sacrifice fly by Gary Thomasson with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to beat the Reds, 6-5. The Dodgers built up their early advantage with the aid of a homer by Ron Cey. The Reds, who had a circuit clout by Dan Driessen in the second, added two runs in the sixth on a single by George Foster, pass to Johnny Bench and a pair of infield outs. Foster drove in a run with a double in the seventh and Paul Blair tied the score with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. The Dodgers opened the ninth with singles by Steve Garvey and Cey. After one out, Steve Yeager beat out an infield hit, loading the bases and setting the stage for Thomasson's winning fly.

Giants 9, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
After losing their first game under Dave Bristol, the Giants gained a victory for their new manager when Vida Blue pitched a six-hitter and defeated the Astros, 9-2. Larry Herndon drove in three runs for the Giants with a double and two singles, while Rob Andrews, who also had three hits, stole two bases and scored three times.

Pirates 6, Mets 4 at New York (night game):
Scoring two unearned runs in the 14th inning, the Pirates defeated the Mets, 6-4. Phil Garner led off by drawing a pass and, after two out, stole second. Tim Foli bounced to Richie Hebner and was safe on the third baseman's wild throw. Phil Garner took third on the error and scored on a single by ave Parker. Foli advanced to third on Parker's hit and scored on a passed ball by Alex Trevino. The Mets' squandered a bases loaded, one-out rally in the 11th.

Cardinals 5, Expos 4 at St. Louis (night game):
The Expos' club-record 10-game winning streak came to an end with a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals. The Expos almost pulled the game out of the fire with two runs in the ninth inning on a single by Larry Parrish, Rodney Scott's second triple of the game and a sacrifice fly by John Tamargo, but after a single by Dave Cash, Mark Littell struck out Andre Dawson to quell the rally. The Cards, after taking a 3-2 lead, decided the outcome with two runs in the seventh inning on a single by Garry Templeton, pass to Keith Hernandez, single by Ted Simmons and sacrifice fly by Tony Scott.
