Orioles 16, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
Larruping four pitchers for 16 hits, the Orioles posted their seventh consecutive victory, romping over the Red Sox, 16-4. A two-run homer by Roenicke got the Birds rolling in the second inning. They scored five times in the fifth and added six more runs in the sixth stanza, the big blow being the first career grand slam by Rick Dempsey. Al Bumbry drilled a solo homer in the same frame. Jim Rice homered for the Red Sox and Carl Yastrzemski singled for his 2,999th hit.
Angels 5, Brewers 2 at California (day game):
Although needing relief help, Frank Tanana picked up his first victory since June 5 as the Angels won their ninth game out of the last 10, downing the Brewers, 5-2. The Angels scored two runs in the first inning on a single by Rod Carew and doubles by Carney Lansford and Dan Ford. Don Baylor knocked in his 125th run of the year with a single in the three-run fifth. Gorman Thomas drilled his 40th homer of the season for the Brewers in the eighth.
Indians 14, Blue Jays 10 at Cleveland (day game):
A grand-slam homer by Bobby Bonds capped a five-run ninth inning that gave the Indians a 14-10 victory over the Blue Jays. Ron Hassey opened the ninth with a pinch-single and was replaced by pinch-runner Dell Alston, who took second on a sacrifice by Dave Rosello. Cliff Johnson then walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Wayne Cage. A single by Mike Hargrove drove home the tying run and after Rick Manning was issued an intentional pass, Bonds hit losing pitcher Tom Buskey's first serve over the left field fence.
Tigers 3, Yankees 1 at Detroit (day game):
John Wockenfuss drove in all of Detroit's runs as the Tigers clawed the Yankees, 3-1, behind the combined four-hit pitching of Mike Chris and Aurelio Lopez. The Tiger first sacker hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the first inning and lashed a two-run double in the third.
Rangers 6, Twins 5 at Minnesota (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Rangers edged the Twins, 6-5. The Rangers scored three runs in the fourth inning. Pat Putnam drove in the first run with a single and Johnny Grubb followed with a homer. A sacrifice fly by Nelson Norman in the sixth stanza gave the Texans a 4-1 lead. Jim Kern came on in the ninth to record his 26th save of the season.
[DH] A's 3, White Sox 0 (day game) / White Sox 7, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
In a trade of shutouts, the A's won the first half of a doubleheader, 3-0, and the White Sox took the second portion, 7-0. Brian Kingman fired a four-hitter in the opener. The A's scored a run in the first inning on a single by Rickey Henderson, sacrifice by Dwayne Murphy and single by Jeff Newman. A pair of Chisox errors and a sacrifice fly by Mike Heath produced two additional runs in the eighth. In the nightcap, Rich Dotson, making his second major league start, unfurled a six-hitter. The White Sox scored in the second on a double by Mike Colbern and twice in the third on a single by Claudell Washington and groundout by Harry Chappas. A two-run homer by Lamar Johnson highlighted a three-run ninth.
Royals 3, Mariners 1 at Seattle (day game):
Scattering six hits, Larry Gura pitched the Royals to a 3-1 triumph over the Mariners. The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when George Brett walked, stole second and scored on a single by Darrell Porter. The Royals picked up their two other runs in the second on two walks, a single by Willie Wilson and throwing error by Mariner catcher Larry Cox.
Padres 4, Braves 1 at Atlanta (day game):
A two-run homer by Gene Tenace trigged the Padres to a 4-1 decision over the Braves. Tenace's round-tripper came with one out in the second inning and followed a single by Jerry Turner. Another single by Turner, a stolen base and pair of throwing errors helped the Padres to a marker in the fourth. A pinch-single by Charlie Spikes in the eighth produced the Braves' lone tally before the Padres picked up their final counter in the ninth, with Turner scoring his third run of the game.
Cubs 15, Phillies 2 at Chicago (day game):
Barry Foote went 4-for-5, including a grand-slam homer, to pace the Cubs to a 15-2 rout of the Phillies. Foote's blast came in the fourth inning and followed an intentional walk to Steve Ontiveros. The Cubs reached their season high of 22 hits. In addition to Foote, Larry Biittner had four hits, plus three RBIs. Mike Vail smashed a two-run homer. The Phils' pair came on a round-tripper by Bake McBride in the seventh.
Dodgers 3, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
A homer by Steve Garvey snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning as the Dodgers clipped the Reds, 3-1. Joe Ferguson batted in the Dodgers' first run with a sacrifice fly in the second. The Reds' run came in their half on a pass to Fred Norman with the bases loaded. After Garvey's deciding homer, the Dodgers added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Davey Lopes in the eighth.
Astros 4, Giants 1 at Houston (day game):
A two-run pinch-double by Jesus Alou highlighted a four-run outburst in the eighth inning that lifted the Astros to a 4-1 triumph over the Giants. Alou's liner to left center chased home Dave Bergman, aboard via a pinch-single, and Cesar Cedeno, who had singled. Denny Walling followed with a single to score pinch-runner Julio Gonzalez. Enos Cabell then doubled for the fifth hit of the inning and fourth run.
Pirates 6, Mets 5 at New York (day game):
A ninth-inning double by Willie Stargell drove in Dave Parker with the winning run as the Pirates shaded the Mets, 6-5. Parker drilled a one-out triple and Stargell followed with a liner off the right field wall. After the Bucs had gone ahead, 5-4, with three runs in the top of eighth, the Mets tied the contest in the bottom of frame on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Ron Hodges.
Expos 4, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (day game):
Brilliant relief pitching by Woodie Fryman enabled the Expos to beat the Cardinals, 4-1. The veteran lefty came on with the bases loaded and none out in the seventh inning and retired Garry Templeton on a pop fly. Lou Brock then lined to left and Warren Cromartie threw out Ken Reitz trying to score from third base. The Expos broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth when Gary Carter singled, went to third on a double by Ellis Valentine and came home on an error by Templeton. Two insurance runs followed in the sixth on a single by Dave Cash, pass to Andre Dawson, forceout by Rusty Staub and singles by Valentine and Larry Parrish.
