Red Sox 3, Orioles 2 at Boston (night game):
Bob Stanley and Dick Drago combined on a four-hitter as the Red Sox edged the Orioles, 3-2, snapping the Birds' seven-game winning streak. The Sox got two runs in the first inning as Jerry Remy drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a single by Rick Burleson and scored on a double by Fred Lynn. Burleson tallied on a sacrifice fly by Jim Rice. The Sox tallied their third run in the third inning when Lynn doubled and scored on a triple by Rice.
[DH] Royals 6, Twins 5 (night game) / Twins 5, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
The Twins and Royals divided a doubleheader, the Royals winning the first game, 6-5, in 14 innings, and the Twins capturing the nightcap, 5-2. The lidlifter was tied, 5-5, going into the 14th, when Hal McRae belted a one-out homer to produce the winning run. Dan Quisenberry pitched brilliantly in relief for the Royals, getting out of a bases-loaded, none-out situation in the 13th frame. Homers by Ron Jackson and Roy Smalley paced the Twins to victory in the second game. Jackson drilled a solo round-tripper in the fourth inning and Smalley connected for a two-run shot in the sixth stanza to give the Twins a 3-2 lead. After Smalley's blast, the Twins picked up two more runs in the same inning on consecutive singles by Jose Morales, Dave Edwards and Ken Landreaux.
Mariners 5, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
A leadoff homer by Mickey Rivers in the first inning triggered the Rangers to a 5-2 victory over the Mariners. Rivers connected off Roy Branch, who was making his first major league appearance. Richie Zisk drove in the second run of the frame with a sacrifice fly. Billy Sample doubled in a run in the fourth inning and singled in another during a two-run sixth. Jim Sundberg followed Sample's sixth-inning hit with another RBI single.
