Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 8, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
A four-run rally in the eighth inning lifted the Yankees to an 8-3 triumph over the Red Sox. With the Red Sox ahead, 3-2, Bobby Murcer led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Lou Piniella. After a double by Reggie Jackson scored Murcer, Chris Chambliss was hit by a pitch. Graig Nettles hit a grounder to Carl Yastrzemski and when the first baseman threw wildly to the plate in a futile effort to get Piniella, Jackson also scored from second. The final run of the inning counted on a grounder by Jerry Narron.

White Sox 8, Angels 7 at Chicago (night game):
Jim Morrison belted two homers and Alan Bannister singled home the tie-breaking run as the White Sox edged the Angels, 8-7. The score was 7-7 in the sixth inning when Kevin Bell drew a one-out walk off loser Don Aase. Dave LaRoche relieved and was greeted with consecutive singles by Mike Squires and Bannister. The White Sox jumped on Angel starter Nolan Ryan for five runs in the first inning with Morrison's first round-tripper capping the outburst. Morrison's second circuit swat put the White Sox ahead, 7-5, but the Angels tied the score in the sixth with a solo homer by Brian Downing and squeeze bunt single by Rod Carew.

Tigers 14, Indians 1 at Detroit (night game):
Blasting off for eight runs in the first inning, the Tigers enjoyed a 14-1 rout of the Indians. A three-run double by Jason Thompson and two-run single by Ricky Peters -- his first major league hit -- highlighted the explosion. Lance Parrish drilled a two-run homer in the second and Thompson unloaded a bases-empty circuit clout in the eighth.

Twins 3, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Geoff Zahn, getting relief help from Mike Marshall, who notched his 30th save, gained his ninth victory in 10 road decisions as the Twins defeated the Royals, 3-1. The Twins took the lead in the second inning on a walk to Ron Jackson and back-to-back singles by Butch Wynegar and Rick Sofield. A sacrifice fly by John Castino in the fourth made it 2-0 and the Twins' final tally came on a homer by Danny Goodwin in the eighth.

Brewers 5, A's 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Picking up his 14th victory, Jim Slaton tossed a five-hitter as the Brewers snapped their four-game losing streak with a 5-0 whitewashing of the A's. Cecil Cooper belted a homer in the first inning and delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Brewers scored three times in the seventh on a triple by Charlie Moore and sacrifice flies by Don Money and Ben Oglivie.

Rangers 5, Mariners 2 at Texas (night game):
Homers by Willie Horton and Leon Roberts triggered the Mariners to a 5-2 triumph over the Rangers. Horton led off the fifth inning with a round-tripper and one out later, Roberts connected to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. They scored two runs in the seventh on a pair of errors by Ranger shortstop Nelson Norman and registered their final tally in the eighth on an RBI single by Ruppert Jones.

Blue Jays 3, Orioles 1 at Toronto (night game):
Scattering nine hits, Tom Underwood pitched the Blue Jays to a 3-1 triumph over the Orioles. The Blue Jays jumped to a two-run lead in the first inning on a double by Alfredo Griffin, triple by Bob Bailor and groundout by Otto Velez. Rico Carty cracked a homer in the seventh.

Reds 9, Astros 8 at Cincinnati (night game):
Moving back into first place in the see-saw battle in the West division, the Reds shaded the Astros, 9-8. After the Astros went ahead, 7-6, in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Jose Cruz, run-scoring double by Enos Cabell and pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Danny Heep, the Reds retaliated with three markers in the bottom of the frame. Hector Cruz led off with a walk and Dave Collins followed with a bunt that Astro hurler Joe Sambito threw wildly to second and both runners were safe. Catcher Bruce Bochy then picked Cruz off second and Joe Morgan popped out, but Dave Concepcion blasted a homer and George Foster followed with a round-tripper that proved to be the necessary winning run.

Padres 3, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Padres posted a 3-1 decision over the Dodgers behind the combined six-hit pitching of Bob Owchinko and Steve Mura. The first Padre run came in the third inning when Ozzie Smith doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and came home on an infield single by Gene Richards. A sacrifice fly by Bill Fahey drove in another tally in the fourth and the final marker came in the seventh on a pair of Dodger errors.

[DH] Expos 8, Cubs 6 (night game) / Expos 3, Cubs 2 at Montreal (night game):
Sweeping a doubleheader from the Cubs, 8-6 and 3-2, the Expos moved into first place in the East division by less than one percentage point over the Pirates. The Expos broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run outburst in the fourth inning of the curtain raiser on an RBI single by Ellis Valentine, run-scoring triple by Larry Parrish and two-run single by Dave Cash. Parrish and Andre Dawson connected for homers for the Expos and Dave Kingman drove in three runs for the Cubs with his 45th homer, a triple and single. The nightcap was tied, 2-2, in the fifth inning when the Expos scored their eventual winning tally on a double by Warren Cromartie and single by Cash. The Expos' first two runs came on a homer by Parrish in the second, the third baseman's 23rd circuit clout of the campaign.

Phillies 5, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Nino Espinosa received credit for his fourth victory of the season over his ex-teammates, pitching the Phillies past the Mets, 5-2. The game was tied, 1-1, in the third inning when Greg Luzinski connected for a two-run homer. A single by Pete Rose drove home another tally in the fourth and a bases-loaded walk in the sixth forced in another Phillie run.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A two-run homer by Willie Stargell sparked a five-run sixth inning that carried the Pirates to a 7-3 triumph over the Cardinals. The Bucs trailed, 3-2, when Dave Parker led off the sixth with a single and Stargell followed with his round-tripper. Ed Ott added a two-run double before Phil Garner capped the rally with a two-run single.

Braves 2, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Larry McWilliams and Joey McLaughlin combined on a five-hitter as the Braves shaded the Giants, 2-1. The winning run was unearned. In the seventh inning, Dale Murphy walked, went to second on a sacrifice, reached third when Frisco second sacker Rob Andrews dropped a throw at first base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pepe Frias.
