Red Sox 9, Yankees 2 at Boston (night game):
Carl Yastrzemski collected his 3,000th career hit -- an eighth-inning single -- to highlight a 9-2 victory by the Red Sox over the Yankees. A homer by Jim Rice gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the first inning and they added three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth. Yankee starter Catfish Hunter, making his final career appearance in Fenway Park, received a standing ovation although kayoed in the fifth. Yaz became the 15th player to reach the 3,000-hit plateau and the first American Leaguer to get 3,000 hits and 400 homers.

White Sox 11, Angels 5 at Chicago (night game):
A six-run outburst in the first inning propelled the White Sox to an 11-5 thumping of the Angels. In their first turn at bat, Alan Bannister was safe on an error by Angel shortstop Bert Campaneris, Thad Bosley doubled and Lamar Johnson beat out an infield hit to plate the first run. Chet Lemon doubled for the second run. Jim Morrison drove home two more tallies with a single. Greg Pryor added a run with a double to kayo Angel starter Chris Knapp and Kevin Bell greeted reliever Mike Barlow with a run-scoring single to cap the inning.

Tigers 4, Indians 1 at Detroit (night game):
The combined four-hit pitching by Milt Wilcox and Aurelio Lopez carried the Tigers to a 4-1 decision over the Indians. The Tigers scored twice in the fourth inning on doubles by Alan Trammell, Jerry Morales and Lance Parrish and registered their final two runs in the eighth on sacrifice flies by Steve Kemp and John Wockenfuss.

Royals 4, Twins 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Allowing just three hits, Dennis Leonard pitched the Royals to a 4-0 whitewashing of the Twins. The shutout was Leonard's fourth of the season and the third in his last five starts. With two out in the sixth inning of the scoreless game, George Brett hit a pop fly down the left field line that Rick Sofield dropped for an error and Brett reached second. Amos Otis followed with a single driving in Brett, and Al Cowens drilled a double that scored Otis. Other runs came in the eighth on a single by Hal McRae, triple by Brett and single by Otis.

Brewers 7, A's 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Posting his fourth shutout and 15th complete game of the season, Mike Caldwell yielded only two hits in pitching the Brewers to a 7-0 victory over the A's. It was the third straight game that the A's had been blanked. A wild pitch gave the Brewers a run in the third inning and they added three tallies in the fourth on a double by Dick Davis, singles by Larry Hisle and Robin Yount, a run-scoring groundout by Jim Gantner and another wild pitch. Cecil Cooper and Ben Oglivie belted homers in the fifth.

Rangers 13, Mariners 3 at Texas (night game):
Driving in five runs with a grand-slam homer and single, Willie Montanez led the Rangers to a 13-3 rout of the Mariners. Montanez connected in the fourth to cap a five-run inning and added his single during a six-run outburst in the sixth that included a homer by Richie Zisk.

Blue Jays 3, Orioles 2 at Toronto (night game):
Butch Edge pitched a six-hitter as the Blue Jays shaded the Orioles, 3-2. The first two Blue Jay runs came in the sixth inning on a bases-loaded single by Rick Cerone. With two out and the score tied, 2-2, in the eighth, Rick Bosetti smacked a homer off Jim Palmer for the game-winning run.

Reds 7, Astros 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Moving to a 1½-game lead in the West division, the Reds pounded out a 7-4 decision over the Astros. The Reds picked up three runs in the first inning on a single by Dave Collins, a passed ball, doubles by Joe Morgan and Dave Concepcion, another passed ball, a walk to George Foster and a double-play gounder. They added three more in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Dan Driessen and run-scoring singles by Ray Knight and Collins.

Dodgers 5, Padres 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Cracking three hits apiece, Bill Russell and Steve Garvey paced the Dodgers to a 5-2 victory over the Padres. Russell keyed a two-run third inning when he singled in Johnny Oates, stole second and came around on singles by Garvey and Ron Cey. Russell also scored the Dodgers' third run when he tripled and crossed the plate on an infield hit by Garvey in the fifth.

Expos 6, Cubs 3 at Montreal (night game):
Winning their 15th game out of the last 16, the Expos downed the Cubs, 6-3. The score was tied, 3-3, in the eighth inning, when Steve Rogers drew a walk from Bruce Sutter -- a loser for the third time in his last four appearances. One out later, Dave Cash singled. Andre Dawson forced Cash, but Tony Perez came through with a two-run double. A triple by Gary Carter drove home the final tally.

Phillies 4, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Randy Lerch pitched the Phillies to a 4-0 blanking of the Mets. The Phils scored in the first inning on a walk to Pete Rose, single by Bake McBride and sacrifice fly by Mike Schmidt. In the second stanza, Bob Boone and Larry Bowa singled, Lerch drilled a triple and Rose followed with a double.

Pirates 2, Cardinals 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
John Candelaria and Kent Tekulve combined on a shutout as the Pirates defeated the Cardinals, 2-0. The Pirates scored their first run in the second inning when Bill Madlock walked, stole second and came home on a single by Ed Ott. Ott tripled in the fifth frame and was driven in on a single by Phil Garner. Tekulve relieved in the ninth with runners on second and third and one out and slammed the door on the Redbirds for his 27th save of the year.

Giants 4, Braves 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Mike Ivie homered in the fifth inning for the deciding run as the Giants edged the Braves, 4-3. A walk, singles by Vida Blue and Max Venable, an infield out by Rob Andrews and single by Willie McCovey netted the Giants two runs in the third. Another run scored on three errors in the fourth before Ivie clouted his homer.
