Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Red Sox 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Ken Singleton homered and singled, driving in three runs, to lead the Orioles to a 5-3 victory over the Red Sox. Singleton's homer tied the score at 2-2 in the third inning. His single with the bases loaded in the fifth knocked in two runs to put the Orioles ahead and Eddie Murray followed with a double to add an extra tally.

A's 8, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Pinch-hitting, Wayne Gross smashed a grand-slam homer to cap a six-run explosion in the eighth inning as the A's defeated the White Sox, 8-3. Claudell Washington homered in the sixth to give the White Sox a 3-2 lead before the A's erupted. Rickey Henderson walked to open the rally and, after a sacrifice by Dwayne Murphy, shortstop Greg Pryor threw wildly on a grounder by Jim Essian, putting runners on second and third. The White Sox passed Dave Revering intentionally to load the bases, but Jeff Newman wrecked the move with a two-run single. Mitchell Page then walked to reload the sacks for Gross, who batted for Larry Murray and hit his grand slam off Ed Farmer.

Mariners 7, Royals 5 at Kansas City (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Leon Roberts powered the Mariners to a 7-5 victory over the Royals. Willie Horton drove in a run for the Mariners with a single and Roberts added another with a double in the first inning. Then, in the third, Julio Cruz doubled and Ruppert Jones walked. After a sacrifice by Tom Paciorek, Larry Gura passed Horton intentionally to load the bases before falling victim to Roberts' slam. Horton singled and batted in the Mariners' last run in the seventh. George Brett hit a two-run homer for the Royals and Hal McRae delivered two runs with a double.

Angels 8, Brewers 7 at Milwaukee (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Rod Carew scored Bobby Grich in the ninth inning and gave the Angels an 8-7 victory over the Brewers in a game marked by a fight that resulted in the banishment of two players. In the seventh, Dan Ford went to bat for the Angels and tangled with Lary Sorensen after being decked twice by the Brewers' pitcher. Both combatants were ejected. The Angels jumped on reliever Bob Galasso for three runs in the eighth to take a 7-3 lead, but the Brewers rallied to tie the score in their half. Grich led off the ninth with a single, took second on a sacrifice by Rick Miller and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Bill Castro before scoring on Carew's long fly to center field. Dave LaRoche received credit for his seventh victory of the season although Don Aase came on to get the final two outs of the game and earn a save.

Rangers 5, Twins 3 at Texas (night game):
Mickey Rivers rapped five straight hits, including two homers, enabling the Rangers to defeat the Twins, 5-3. Rivers' first homer of the game sparked a three-run outburst in the first inning. Dave Goltz, who started for the Twins, was kayoed after retiring only one batter. Rivers singled and scored in the second before adding his second circuit clout of the game in the sixth. Fergie Jenkins, who broke a personal four-game losing streak, gave up a homer by Danny Goodwin in the sixth and was lifted after Rob Wilfong and Ken Landreaux rapped round-trippers in the eighth. Sparky Lyle took over and picked up his 12th save.

Blue Jays 4, Indians 3 at Toronto (night game):
A triple by Rick Cerone drove in two runs in the sixth inning and brought the Blue Jays a 4-3 victory over the Indians. Alfredo Griffin singled and Bob Bailor and Tony Soliata doubled to produce the Blue Jays' initial pair in the first. After the Indians went ahead, 3-2, John Mayberry walked in the sixth. Joe Cannon singled Mayberry to third and then stole second before both runners scored on Cerone's triple.

Dodgers 2, Reds 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rick Sutcliffe held the Reds hitless for 6 1/3 innings before yielding three singles while pitching the Dodgers to a 2-0 victory. The rookie righthander raised his record to 15-9, but the complete game was only his fourth of the season. Sutcliffe counted the first run, drawing a walk in the second inning and scoring on singles by Davey Lopes and Bill Russell. The Dodgers added their other marker on singles by Steve Garvey and Ron Cey, a pass to joe Ferguson and infield hit by Derrel Thomas in the eighth. Cey's hit was the 1,000th of his career.

Cubs 2, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Breaking up a scoreless game, Jerry Martin hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to give the Cubs a 2-0 victory over the Phillies. After Dickie Noles worked the first nine frames for the Phillies, Ron Reed took over and was greeted with a leadoff single by Larry Biittner. Steve Ontiveros struck out and Barry Foote grounded out before Martin crashed his homer. Bruce Sutter, the fourth pitcher used by the Cubs, was the winner with two innings of hitless relief. Pete Rose, batting safely in his 11th straight game, collected three of the Phillies' seven hits.

Braves 10, Padres 7 at San Diego (night game):
Dale Murphy smashed two homers, a triple and two singles in a 5-for-5 night to lead the Braves to a 10-7 victory over the Padres. Murphy homered for the first time in the second inning. With the score tied, 5-5, in the seventh, Bob Horner singled and Murphy tripled. Mike Lum hit a pinch-single to drive in Murphy and later scored himself on a pinch-single by Biff Pocoroba. Horner and Murphy hit successive homers in the ninth to ice the decision. The Padres almost matched the Braves' 16-hit total, rapping 15, but all were singles.

Astros 7, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
While Vern Ruhle pitched a four-hitter, Rafael Landestoy led the Astros' attack in a 7-0 victory over the Giants. Landestoy singled and scored in the third inning, doubled to drive in a run and scored himself in the fourth and got another run home with a grounder in the sixth. Tom Wiedenbauer, an outfielder from Columbus (Southern), batted for the first time in the major leagues in the ninth and drove in the Astros' last two runs with a double.
