Today's scores and summaries:
Twins 10, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
A five-run uprising in the fifth inning triggered the Twins to a 10-3 pasting of the White Sox. Willie Norwood opened the Twins' fifth with a walk and Ken Landreaux was safe when Sox second baseman Jim Morrison misplayed his grounder. Butch Wynegar and John Castino then walked to force in Norwood and a wild pitch allowed Landreaux to score. A triple by Bombo Rivera plated two tallies and a sacrifice fly by Roy Smalley capped the inning.
[DH] Indians 5, Yankees 1 (night game) / Indians 6, Yankees 5 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians scalped the Yankees twice, 5-1 and 6-5. The Yanks led the curtain-raiser, 1-0, in the fifth inning when the Tribe went ahead to stay on a walk to Mike Hargrove, single by Rick Manning, RBI single by Andre Thornton and run-scoring double by Cliff Johnson. The second contest was tied, 5-5, going into the bottom of the ninth, when Tom Veryzer stroked a one-out single and scored the winning marker on a triple by Hargrove.
Orioles 2, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
The Orioles reduced their "magic number" to three for clinching the A.L. East title with a 2-1 triumph over the Tigers. Scott McGregor tossed an eight-hitter as Al Bumbry drilled a solo homer in the eighth inning and Ken Singleton led off the ninth with a round-tripper.
Royals 16, Angels 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Al Cowens and Darrell Porter knocked in four runs apiece to help the Royals cut California's lead in the West to two games with a 16-4 hammering of the Angels. The Royals blew the game open with four runs in the fifth inning, three in the sixth and five more in the seventh. Highlighting the outbursts were a two-run homer by Pete LaCock in the fifth, two-run tripie by Cowens in the sixth and three-run homer by Porter in the seventh. George Brett drilled a triple in the third inning, thus becoming the first major leaguer since Willie Mays in 1957 to collect 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 homers in one season.
Rangers 6, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Driving in two runs apiece, Buddy Bell and Pat Putnam paced the Rangers to a 6-3 verdict over the A's. Bell plated two tallies with a first-inning single. Putnam crashed a solo homer in the second stanza and stroked a run-scoring single in the fifth. Steve Comer, getting relief help from Jim Kern, received credit for his 16th victory of the season.
Brewers 7, Mariners 6 at Seattle (night game):
A three-run homer by Paul Molitor with two out in the ninth inning gave the Brewers a 7-6 victory over the Mariners. The Brewers trailed, 6-4, going into the ninth, when Don Money and pinch-hitter Ben Oglivie singled and Molitor drilled the ball over the left-center field fence.
[DH] Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 4 (night game) / Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
The Red Sox and Blue Jays split a doubleheader, the Jays winning the opener, 5-4, and the Sox winning the nightcap, 5-3. The Jays won the first game with a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Rick Bosetti and Joe Cannon hit one-out singles and Rick Cerone then doubled to the wall in left-center, tying the game. Fred Lynn's throw to the plate was handled by catcher Mike O'Berry, who threw to second in an attempt to nail Cerone. The ball sailed into center field and Cerone raced home with the winning run. Jim Rice belted a three-run homer and Lynn added a two-run blast to account for all the Sox runs in the second game. Lynn's blast came in the first inning and Rice drilled a 3-2 pitch into the seats in the third frame, following Gary Allenson's being hit by a pitch and Jack Brohamer's drawing a walk.
Dodgers 9, Braves 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
A barrage of homers lifted the Dodgers to a 9-4 victory over the Braves. Joe Ferguson hit bases-empty circuit clouts in the second and eighth innings, Steve Garvey led off the fifth with a round-tripper and Dusty Baker blasted a two-run shot in the seventh. After Ferguson's second-inning swat, the Dodgers scored four unearned runs after errors by Bob Horner and Jerry Royster with the key hits being a two-run double by Bill Russell and run-scoring single by Garvey.
Pirates 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Taking sole possession of first place in the East division, the Pirates edged the Expos, 2-1, behind the six-hit pitching of Don Robinson. The first Buc run came in the third inning when Omar Moreno singled, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice and came home on a single by Dave Parker. In the fifth frame, Robinson stroked a one-out single, reached second on a single by Tim Foli and raced home on a single by Parker.
Astros 1, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Hurling his fifth shutout of the season and picking up his 19th victory, Joe Niekro pitched the Astros to a 1-0 triumph over the Padres. The lone run of the game came in the ninth inning when Rafael Landestoy hit a leadoff triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cesar Cedeno.
Giants 7, Reds 4 at San Francisco (night game):
A five-run, first-inning explosion propelled the Giants to a 7-4 victory over the Reds. Bill North, Joe Strain, Mike Ivie and Darrell Evans all singled to account for the first two runs. Ivie scored on a wild pitch and Larry Herndon drew a walk before Roger Metzger drilled a triple to make the score 5-0.
Phillies 7, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
An error by St. Louis third baseman Ken Reitz permitted the go-ahead run to score as the Phillies rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to down the Cardinals, 7-5. After the Cards had taken a 5-4 lead in the eighth with a four-run outburst capped by a three-run homer by Ted Simmons, the Phillies tied the score in the ninth on consecutive two-out singles by Pete Rose, Manny Trillo and Bake McBride. Mike Schmidt hit a grounder to third that Reitz misplayed and Trillo scored. The Phillies picked up an insurance tally on an RBI single by Greg Gross.
