Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 8, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
After Eddie Murray broke a tie with a homer in the seventh inning, Mark Belanger walked with two out in the eighth and scored on a double by Al Bumbry to enable the Orioles to defeat the Tigers, 8-7. The Tigers got off to a 3-0 lead in the first on a homer by Ron LeFlore, pass to Lou Whitaker and homer by Steve Kemp, but the Orioles erupted for five runs in the second, including consecutive circuit clouts by Lee May and Rich Dauer. The Orioles picked up another run in the fourth, only to have the Tigers tie the score at 6-6 in their half on a pass to Jerry Morales with the bases loaded, an infield out by Jason Thompson and single by Kirk Gibson. Following Murray's homer and Bumbry's run-scoring double that put the Orioles up by two runs, the Tigers threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two out against Tippy Martinez. Don Stanhouse relieved and walked pinch-hitter John Wockenfuss to force in a run but then retired Gibson to save the game.
Angels 11, Royals 6 at Kansas City (night game):
Brian Downing hit a three-run homer and Don Baylor also drove in three runs with a homer and single to pace the Angels to an 11-6 victory over the Royals. Baylor's homer started the scoring in the second inning. With the score tied, 2-2, the Angels exploded for six runs in the seventh. Baylor drove in two runs with a single and Downing capped the outburst with a homer. The Royals cut their deficit with four runs in the eighth, three scoring on a homer by George Brett, but the Angels iced the victory with three in the ninth on a single by Rod Carew, homer by Bobby Grich, single by Larry Harlow for his fourth hit of the game and a double by Jim Anderson. Willie Wilson stole his 75th base of the season for the Royals, becoming only the fifth player in A. L. history to reach that figure in thefts.
Twins 3, Yankees 1 at Minnesota (day game):
John Castino drove in all of the Twins' runs to beat the Yankees, 3-1. Rookie Dave Righetti was the loser, although yielding only three hits in seven innings. In the second, Roy Smalley doubled and scored on a single by Castino. The Yankees tied the score in the seventh with a single by George Scott and double by Chris Chambliss, but in the Twins' half, Bombo Rivera walked and Castino homered to decide the outcome.
Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 2 at Toronto (night game):
Tony Solaita and Rick Cerone cracked two-run homers and Roy Howell contributed a solo shot as the Blue Jays defeated the Red Sox, 6-2, behind the four-hit pitching of Balor Moore. Jim Rice homered for the Red Sox runs.
Astros 7, Braves 1 at Houston (night game):
Helped by two errors, the Astros breezed to a 7-1 victory over the Braves behind the pitching of Ken Forsch, who turned in his first complete game since July 28. Terry Puhl singled, stole second and scored on a single by Jose Cruz in the first inning and then doubled and counted on a single by Cesar Cedeno in the third for the Astros' only earned runs. Their remaining tallies, two more in the third and three in the eighth, were tainted on a pair of errors by Darrel Chaney.
Dodgers 3, Giants 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bob Welch, who had been bothered by elbow trouble, made only his third appearance in over two months and gained his first victory since May 15 when the Dodgers defeated the Giants, 3-0. Welch worked the first five innings and allowed four singles. Joe Beckwith finished and yielded three more hits. The Dodgers nailed Bob Knepper for two runs in the third on doubles by Davey Lopes and Pedro Guerrero, an infield hit by Steve Garvey and sacrifice fly by Ron Cey. Mickey Hatcher doubled and Steve Yeager singled for the other run in the sixth.
[DH] Expos 6, Mets 3 (night game) / Expos 2, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
The Expos swept a twi-night doubleheader from the Mets, 6-3 and 2-0, and moved into the lead in the East division by one-half game over the Pirates, who lost to the Phillies. In the opener, Ellis Valentine doubled in the second inning and scored the Expos' first run on a single by Rodney Scott. A double by Gary Carter and single by Valentine added a run in the fourth before the Mets rallied to tie the score in the seventh. Jerry White, replacing Valentine in the Expos' outfield, came to bat in the eighth and smashed a homer to break the tie. The Expos then iced the decision with three unearned runs. Carter doubled and Scott was safe on an error by Mets' shortstop Frank Taveras. After Scott stole second, Warren Cromartie was passed intentionally with one out to load the bases. Dave Cash followed with a long fly to right fielder Gil Flores, who held the ball, thinking his catch made it three out, and both Carter and Scott scored on the mental error. Scott Sanderson for the Expos and Mike Scott for the Mets matched ciphers through the first eight innings of the nightcap before the Expos broke away to score their runs in the ninth. Andre Dawson singled with one out and took third on a single by Rusty Staub. Dawson scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Carter and Scott came across with an insurance run on a single by White.
Phillies 2, Pirates 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
A single by Manny Trillo in the seventh inning drove in Larry Bowa for the Phillies' deciding run in a 2-1 victory over the Pirates. Pete Rose, batting safely in his 18th straight game, singled in the first, took third on a single by Mike Schmidt and counted the Phillies' initial run on a sacrifice fly by Greg Luzinski. The Pirates loaded the bases with singles by Bill Madlock, Phil Garner and Jim Rooker in the fifth and tied the score when Randy Lerch forced in a run with a pass to Tim Foli. Bowa singled in the seventh and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Lerch. The Pirates then passed Rose intentionally to get at Trillo, who wrecked the move with his game-winning single.
Reds 8, Padres 5 at San Diego (night game):
Coming from behind with five runs after two were out in the eighth inning, the Reds defeated the Padres, 8-5. Dave Concepcion started the Reds' rally with a double, George Foster walked and Johnny Bench drove in two runs with a double. Randy Jones gave way to Steve Mura on the mound for the Padres and was greeted with a single by Ray Knight that tied the score at 5-5. Dan Driessen followed with a double for the go-ahead run and Hector Cruz added another tally with a single. The Reds tacked on an extra run in the ninth to wrap up the victory that kept them 2½ games ahead of the Astros in the West division race.
Cardinals 2, Cubs 1 at St. Louis (night game):
An unearned run in the seventh inning enabled the Cardinals to edge the Cubs, 2-1, with Silvio Martinez gaining his 15th victory. The Cubs' counter in the first also was unearned on an error by Ken Oberkfell. The Cards tied the score against Dennis Lamp in the fourth on a single by Lou Brock, a stolen base, single by Keith Hernandez and infield out by Ted Simmons. In the seventh, Hernandez was safe on an error by Larry Biittner and stole second. After stopping at third on a single by Dane Iorg, Hernandez scored the deciding run on an infield out by Tony Scott.
