Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 4, Tigers 1 at Boston (night game):
John Tudor became the first leftnanded starter for the Red Sox to notch a victory in more than one year when the rookie defeated the Tigers, 4-1, in a game stopped by rain after 6½ innings. The last previous Red Sox southpaw to turn the trick was Bill Lee against the Twins July 15, 1978. The Red Sox decided the outcome in the first inning when Carl Yastrzemski knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single and Jim Dwyer added a tally with a grounder. The Tigers' only run was unearned off Tudor, who pitched the first complete game, albeit a shortened one, of his major league career.
Rangers 3, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Buddy Bell batted in two runs with a double to give the Rangers a 3-1 victory over the Angels in a game held up for 63 minutes in the fourth inning when the outfield lights went off because of a power failure. In the seventh, with the score tied, 1-1, Nelson Norman singled for the Rangers and Mickey Rivers walked. After a sacrifice by Bump Wills and intentional pass to Al Oliver, Bell stroked his double.
Twins 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Ken Landreaux smashed a two-run homer in the ninth inning to tie the score and Butch Wynegar followed with a solo shot to bring the Twins a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. Gorman Thomas hit his 43rd homer of the season for the Brewers, who went into the ninth with a 2-0 lead before Roy Smalley drew a pass and Landreaux and Wynegar followed with their round-trippers to beat Moose Haas. Jerry Koosman gained his 19th victory, but after the veteran lefthander yielded a single by Ben Oglivie in the ninth, Mike Marshall took over to gain his 31st save.
Royals 13, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
U.L. Washington walloped the first two homers of his major league career, each with two men on base, and tied the Kansas City club record for RBIs in one game as the Royals trounced the A's, 13-4. Washington hit his first homer batting lefthanded against Rick Langford in the second inning and hit his second homer swinging righthanded against Craig Minetto in the third. Hal McRae also rapped a three-run homer for the Royals. Langford, the A's loser, was stopped on his string of 10 complete games.
White Sox 7, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Chet Lemon belted a three-run double and Jorge Orta and Rusty Torres hit homers to pace the White Sox to a 7-4 victory over the Mariners. Lemon's two-bagger capped a five-run outburst in the third inning. Willie Horton hit a two-run homer for the Mariners and reached the 100-RBI mark for the third time in his 13-year career.
Blue Jays 3, Yankees 2 at Toronto (night game):
The Blue Jays pulled off their second triple play of the month in the course of defeating the Yankees, 3-2, and snapping Ron Guidry's 11-game winning streak. In the seventh inning, the Yankees put men on first and second with singles by Chris Chambliss and Roy Staiger. Damaso Garcia then lined sharply to second baseman Dave McKay, who threw to first to double Staiger. First baseman Craig Kusick's relay to shortstop Alfredo Griffin caught Chambliss off base for the third out. The Blue Jays previously had a triple play against the Indians September 7. The Blue Jays scored all their runs in the first on a single by Bob Bailor, two walks, a single by Rick Bosetti and wild throw by center fielder Bobby Brown.
Cubs 2, Pirates 0 at Chicago (day game):
Lynn McGlothen pitched a four-hitter for his first shutout of the season and Scot Thompson rapped a two-run single to give the Cubs a 2-0 victory over the Pirates, who slipped one game behind the rain-idled Expos in the East division race. McGlothen, helping himself, drew a walk in the fifth inning and raced to third on a single by Ivan DeJesus, who took second on the throw. Thompson followed with his single to drive in both runners.
Astros 3, Reds 2 at Houston (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Bruce Bochy with two out in the 13th inning scored Craig Reynolds and gave the Astros a 3-2 victory to pull within 1½ games of the Reds in the West division race. The game started with aces J.R. Richard and Tom Seaver on the mound, but Seaver left after nine innings and Richard after 11. In the 13th, with Tom Hume pitching for the Reds, Reynolds singled for his fourth hit of the game and Cesar Cedeno sacrificed. Following an intentional pass to Jose Cruz, Enos Cabell grounded out. The Reds then passed pinch-hitter Danny Heep to get at Bochy, who laced Hume's first pitch to him for the game-winning single. The Reds' two runs came on a single by Dan Driessen and homer by Ray Knight in the second inning. The Astros scored an unearned run in the third and tied the game in the seventh when Rafael Landestoy singled, Richard sacrificed and Terry Puhl singled.
Padres 3, Dodgers 1 at San Diego (night game):
Dave Winfield batted in a run with a single in the first inning and homered with a man on base in the third to account for the Padres' scoring in a 3-1 triumph over the Dodgers. Juan Eichelberger held the Dodgers to four hits and posted his first major league victory.
