Orioles 13, Tigers 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Homers by Eddie Murray, Doug DeCinces and Benny Ayala helped power the Orioles to a 13-2 rout of the Tigers. Murray led off the second inning with his round-tripper, Ayala drilled a two-run shot in the fifth and DeCinces belted a solo blast in the sixth. A two-run double by Lee May keyed a five-run third inning that was climaxed by a two-run single by Rich Dauer.

Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 4 at Boston (night game):
Erupting for four runs in the first inning, the Red Sox went on to defeat the Blue Jays, 6-4. A double by Fred Lynn produced the first tally, a single by Jim Rice added another and Carlton Fisk climaxed the outburst with a two-run single. Rice's hit was his 200th of the season, marking the third straight year that the Red Sox outfielder had reached the 200 mark.

Royals 4, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Dennis Leonard pitched his fourth shutout in his last eight starts as the Royals beat the Angels, 4-0. Frank White hit for the cycle, getting a single in the first inning, two-run homer in the third, double in the fifth and triple in the ninth. A sellout crowd of 40,565 boosted the Angels' attendance to 2,523,575, making the Angels only the second club in A.L. history to surpass the 2.5 million mark. Cleveland set the league's all-time attendance record of 2,620,627 in 1948.

Mariners 8, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
A seven-run uprising in the seventh inning, climaxed by the first career grand-slam homer by Bruce Bochte, lifted the Mariners to an 8-1 triumph over the Brewers. The outburst began when Willie Horton doubled and came around on an error by Brewer second baseman Paul Molitor on a grounder by Dan Meyer. After a double by Rodney Craig and walk to Larry Milbourne loaded the bases, Meyer scored on a safe squeeze bunt by Larry Cox. A sacrifice fly by Julio Cruz delievered another tally and after Ruppert Jones walked to again fill the bases, Bochte followed with his big blast.

White Sox 6, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
A balk by Mike Marshall permitted the winning run to score as the White Sox shaded the Twins, 6-5, in 10 innings. Jim Morrison drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a flyout by Lamar Johnson and strolled in when Marshall committed his balk.

Yankees 6, Indians 3 at New York (night game):
Posting his 12th victory in his last 13 decisions, Ron Guidry pitched the Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the Indians. The Yanks took the lead in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Willie Randolph and two-run double by Oscar Gamble. A run-scoring single by Brad Gulden produced a fourth-inning tally and Gamble clouted a two-run homer in the fifth.

Rangers 5, A's 2 at Texas (night game):
Scoring all their runs in the seventh inning, the Rangers downed the A's, 5-2. Buddy Bell opened vseventh with an infield single and Willie Montanez walked. A single by Richie Zisk tied the score at 1-1. Jim Sundberg stroked a single to put the Rangers ahead and Nelson Norman delievered a sacrifice fly before Mickey Rivers capped the scoring with a two-run homer.

Braves 9, Astros 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Becoming a 20-game winner for the third time in his career, Phil Niekro outpitched his brother Joe as the Braves notched a 9-4 victory over the Astros, virtually ending the Astros' pennant hopes. Phil became the first N.L. hurler in 74 years to win 20 and lose 20 in the same year and he and Joe became the first brothers in N.L. history to record 20 victories in the same season. Phil knocked in four runs, stroking a two-run double in the second inning and two-run single in the fifth. Run-scoring singles by Gary Matthews and Barry Bonnell gave the Braves two markers in the third frame and Matthews connected for a two-run homer in the sixth.

Mets 8, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Driving in four runs with a homer and double, Richie Hebner led the Mets to an 8-3 decision over the Cubs. Hebner drilled his round-tripper in the first inning following a walk to Lee Mazzilli. In the fifth, Elliott Maddox and Mazzilli singled and both scored on a double by Hebner, who came in on a single by John Stearns. A single by Doug Flynn added another run.

Reds 4, Padres 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Closing in on the West division championship, the Reds edged the Padres, 4-3. The Reds trailed, 3-2, going into the bottom of the eighth inning but scored two runs on doubles by Ray Knight and Hector Cruz and a two-out single by Dave Collins.

Phillies 11, Cardinals 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run homer by Tim McCarver highlighted a seven-run third inning that carried the Phillies to an 11-5 verdict over the Cardinals. The seven-run inning began with an infield hit by Steve Carlton. After Card shortstop Garry Templeton booted Pete Rose's grounder, a double by Larry Bowa scored Carlton, but Rose was thrown out at the plate. Greg Gross followed with an RBI double and after Mike Schmidt walked, McCarver connected for his first round-tripper of the season. A double by John Poff, error by center fielder Tony Scott and singles by Lonnie Smith and Bud Harrelson produced another pair of runs. Rose went hitless in five trips and was stopped on his 23-game batting streak.

Pirates 10, Expos 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bruce Kison scattered seven hits in pitching the Pirates to a 10-1 triumph over the Expos as the Bucs extended their lead in the East division to 1½ games. A two-run homer by Phil Garner in the fourth inning opened up a 3-0 lead and the Pirates broke the game open with four runs in the sixth. John Milner and Bill Madlock led off the frame with walks and came home on a double by Ed Ott. A double by Garner plated Ott and the final run of inning scored on a single by Omar Moreno.

Dodgers 8, Giants 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Pedro Guerrero each drove in two runs as the Dodgers posted an 8-4 victory over the Giants. The Dodgers scored twice in the second inning on run-scoring singles by Lopes and Russell and pushed across two more in the fifth on a double by Von Joshua and a single by Lopes. Guerrero added a two-run single in the ninth.
