Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 6, Mariners 1 at Chicago (day game):
Tossing a five-hitter, Ken Kravec hurled the White Sox to a 6-1 victory over the Mariners. Thad Bosley drove in two runs with a single in the third inning and accounted for another run with a single in the fifth. Kravec was deprived of a shutout with two away in the ninth when Rodney Craig singled to plate the Mariners run.

Indians 6, Orioles 5 at Cleveland (day game):
Pushing across a run in the 11th inning, the Indians edged the Orioles, 6-5. Ron Pruitt opened the stanza with a walk, took second on a sacrifice by Ted Cox and came in on a single by Dell Alston. The victory enabled the Indians to finish over .500 at 81-80.

Tigers 5, Red Sox 1 at Detroit (day game):
Scattering seven hits, Jack Morris pitched the Tigers to a 5-1 triumph over the Red Sox. The Tigers got three runs in the first inning when Ron LeFlore singled, Tom Brookens cracked a homer and, one out later, Champ Summers also drilled a round-tripper. LeFlore added a circuit clout in the second.

A's 6, Royals 5 at Kansas City (day game):
A two-run triple by Dave Revering in the ninth inning gave the A's a 6-5 triumph over the Royals. With the score tied, 4-4, Rickey Henderson singled with two out, Dwayne Murphy walked and Revering ripped his three-bagger into the right field corner. The Royals fell short with a one-run rally in their half of the ninth.

Twins 5, Brewers 0 at Minnesota (day game):
After winning only three games with the Mets last year, Jerry Koosman notched his 20th victory by pitching the Twins to a 5-0 whitewashing of the Brewers. It was the first time the Brewers were blanked all season. The southpaw recorded his 10th complete game and struck out three. One strikeout victim was Gorman Thomas, who tied the A. L. record of 175 in a season. The Twins erupted for all their runs in the fifth inning.

Yankees 9, Blue Jays 2 at New York (day game):
Jim Spencer cracked two homers and Graig Nettles also connected for a round-tripper as the Yankees beat the Blue Jays, 9-2, ending the season with an eight-game winning streak. Ron Guidry pitched three innings and struck out four batters, giving him a total of 201 to go along with 248 last year, marking the first time any Yankee pitcher had two 200-plus strikeout seasons. Guidry's ERA of 2.78 was the A.L.'s best.

Angels 11, Rangers 5 at Texas (day game):
Homers by Bobby Grich, Carney Lansford and Don Baylor powered the Angels to an 11-5 thumping of the Rangers. Lansford connected for a two-run shot in the first inning, Baylor clouted a bases-empty blow in the third and Grich added a three-run round-tripper in the fifth to hike his RBI total to 101.

Braves 7, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Scattering six hits, Phil Niekro picked up his 21st victory of the season, pitching the Braves to a 7-2 decision over the Reds. The Braves tallied twice in the second inning. Darrel Chaney walked, Bruce Benedict doubled and Niekro grounded out, scoring Chaney. A single by Eddie Miller then plated Benedict. Bob Horner drilled his 33rd homer in the third and Jerry Royster his third in the sixth stanza.

Astros 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
The Astros pushed across two runs in the eighth inning to end the season with a 4-2 decision over the Dodgers. Th eAstros overcame a 2-1 deficit in the eighth on an RBI single by Jeff Leonard and sacrifice fly by Danny Heep. Joe Niekro went the first seven innings to get credit for his 21st win of the season, tying him with brother Phil of the Braves for the league lead in victories.

Phillies 2, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
Steve Carlton ruined the Expos' hopes for the East division title by pitching the Phillies to a 2-0 victory with a three-hit, 12-strikeout performance. The veteran southpaw helped his own cause, hitting a single in the third inning, going to third on a double by Pete Rose and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Bake McBride. The Phils' other run came in the sixth when Larry Bowa walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and tallied on a double by Greg Gross.

Pirates 5, Cubs 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Pirates clinched the East division championship by beating the Cubs. 5-3, as Willie Stargell and Bill Robinson drove in two runs apiece. The Pirates scored in the first inning when Tim Foli walked, moved to third on a single by Dave Parker and came home on a sacrifice fly by Stargell. After Phil Garner drove in a run with a single in the fourth, a round-tripper by Stargell made it 3-0 in the fifth. Robinson drove in two tallies with a seventh-inning single. Dave Kingman homered for the Cubs. Kent Tekulve hurled the final three innings in relief of Bruce Kison to notch his 31st save of the campaign.

Padres 5, Giants 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Gene Tenace belted a two-run homer in the 10th inning to lift the Padres to a 5-3 victory over the Giants in Roger Craig's final game as San Diego manager. With the score tied, 3-3, and one out in the 10th, Ozzie Smith walked and Tenace followed with his blast over the left field fence.

Mets 4, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Closing the season with their sixth straight victory, the Mets prevailed over the Cardinals, 4-2. With the score tied in the ninth inning, Alex Trevino singled, stole second and scored on a single by Elliott Maddox. Maddox, moving to second on the throw home, was able to score when Card catcher Terry Kennedy threw wildly to second. The Redbirds' Keith Hernandez finished the year at .344, tops in the league, and Lou Brock played the final game of his career.
