Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 2, Angels 1 at California (night game):
A pair of throwing errors that followed a sacrifice bunt enabled the Indians to score two unearned runs and gain a 2-1 victory over the Angels. Jorge Orta led off the fourth inning with a single and Joe Charboneau followed with a bunt fielded by Angel pitcher Bruce Kison, making his A.L. debut. Kison threw wildly to first base. Bobby Grich, backing up the play, also made a wild throw, allowing Orta to score and Charboneau to reach third base. Charboneau then scored what proved to be the winning run on a grounder by Ron Hassey.

White Sox 8, Orioles 2 at Chicago (day game):
A seven-run outburst in the sixth inning carried the White Sox to an 8-2 victory over the Orioles. Lamar Johnson, who had four hits in the game, led off the outburst with a homer and, batting for the second time in the stanza, drove in another run with a single.

Royals 8, Tigers 6 at Kansas City (day game):
Making his first appearance in a Royals' uniform, Dave Chalk delivered the tie-breaking run with a sacrifice fly as the Royals defeated the Tigers, 8-6. John Wathan, pinch-hitting with one out in the eighth inning, tripled and scored on Chalk's fly to snap a 6-6 deadlock. U.L. Washington followed with a single and Willie Wilson tripled to add an insurance tally.

Brewers 18, Red Sox 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
In an awesome display of power, the Brewers belted two grand-slam homers in one inning, tying the major league record, while slaughtering the Red Sox, 18-1. Robin Yount opened the second inning with a single, Buck Martinez walked, Paul Molitor singled to load the bases and Cecil Cooper emptied them with a drive into the center field bleachers, knocking out Mike Torrez. Chuck Rainey relieved and gave up a pass to Larry Hisle, double by Ben Oglivie and walk to Sixto Lezcano, filling the sacks again and setting the stage for a slam by Don Money. Yount followed with a solo swat to make it a nine-run inning.

Twins 6, A's 0 at Oakland (day game):
Ken Landreaux rapped a homer, two doubles and a single in support of Geoff Zahn, who allowed only three hits and pitched the Twins to a 6-0 victory over the A's. Landreaux hit his doubles in the fourth and sixth innings and scored both times on singles by Glenn Adams.

Mariners 3, Blue Jays 2 at Seattle (night game):
Leon Roberts accounted for all of the Mariners' scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, homer in the sixth and another game-winning homer in the 10th to beat the Blue Jays, 3-2. Both Blue Jay runs came in the ninth when Bob Bailor walked and John Mayberry homered.

Reds 5, Braves 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
After being held scoreless for 21 innings, the Braves finally ended their drouth, but they still lost to the Reds, 5-4. The Braves took a 4-3 lead in the seventh with their first scoring outburst of the season, but in the ninth Dave Collins walked and Dave Concepcion smashed a homer off Al Hrabosky to win the game for the Reds.

Dodgers 6, Astros 5 at Houston (day game):
A two-out single by Mickey Hatcher scored Dusty Baker in the 17th inning and gave the Dodgers a 6-5 victory over the Astros in a five-hour, 35-minute marathon. Nolan Ryan, making his N. L. debut with the Astros, smashed a three-run homer and was leading, 5-4, when he was removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning. The homer was the first of Ryan's major league career.

Cubs 6, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Barry Foote homered with two men on base and Dave Kingman added his third circuit clout in two days to power the Cubs to a 6-3 victory over the Mets. Neil Allen, who relieved Tom Hausman on the mound for the Mets with two men on base in the seventh inning, was the victim of Foote's homer on his first pitch to the Cubs' catcher. Kingman rapped his round-tripper in the eighth.

Phillies 6, Expos 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Phillies collected a homer, two triples and five doubles among 14 hits to post a 6-2 victory over the Expos. Garry Maddox, who had three hits, drove in the Phillies' initial run with a double in the first and added their second counter with a homer in the third. Manny Trillo also contributed three hits, including a triple. Ron LeFlore rapped a triple and two singles in three trips for the Expos before muscle cramps forced him to leave the game. Rodney Scott, the Expos' second baseman, drew five straight walks to tie the modern N. L. record.

Padres 4, Giants 2 at San Diego (night game):
Dave Winfield drove in four runs, including two with a single in the third inning and two more with his first homer of the season in the fifth, to account for all of the Padres' scoring in a 4-2 victory over the Giants. John Curtis, who pitched for the Giants last year before becoming a free agent and signing with the Padres, blanked his former club for seven innings before giving up two runs in the eighth. Bob Shirley finished the game for the Padres and picked up his second save of the season.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Omar Moreno and Phil Garner drove in two runs apiece to back Jim Bibby, who allowed only six hits in a complete-game performance and pitched the Pirates to a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals. Moreno, who wound up with four hits, doubled to drive in the Pirates' initial pair in the second, tying the score at 2-2.
