Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 8, Indians 3 at California (day game):
The Angels spoiled the A. L. debut of John Denny by pounding out an 8-3 victory over the Indians. The Angels' assault was led by Joe Rudi, who drove in three runs with a single and bases-loaded walk. Don Baylor doubled home a run in the third inning and singled home another in the fourth.
White Sox 5, Orioles 2 at Chicago (day game):
A three-run outburst in the seventh inning carried the White Sox to a 5-2 decision over the Orioles. The score was 2-2 going into the bottom of the seventh when the White Sox loaded the bases on a single by Bruce Kimm, double by Greg Pryor and intentional walk to Alan Bannister. A sacrifice fly by Jim Morrison plated Claudell Washington, the pinch-runner for Kimm, and a double by Lamar Johnson scored Pryor and Bannister.
Royals 3, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (day game):
An intentional walk backfired on Detroit Manager Sparky Anderson as the Royals edged the Tigers, 3-2. The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Hal McRae singled, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Pete LaCock. The Royals made it 3-0 in the seventh. U.L. Washington drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on an infield single by Willie Wilson. With two out McRae was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Willie Aikens spoiled the strategy by drilling a single that scored Washington and Wilson. The Tigers were shut out until the ninth when Champ Summers hit a two-run homer.
Red Sox 3, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Scoring all their runs in the fourth inning, the Red Sox registered their first victory of the season, beating the Brewers, 3-1, behind the four-hit hurling of Bob Stanley. After the first 10 Red Sox batters had been retired, a walk to Rick Burleson and singles by Fred Lynn and Jim Rice produced one run. A double by Carl Yastrzemski drove in Lynn and a grounder by Carlton Fisk plated the third tally.
A's 4, Twins 1 at Oakland (day game):
Mike Norris, who turned in only three complete games last season, went the route in pitching the A's to a 4-1 victory over the Twins. The A's clinched the decision early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Singles by Rickey Henderson and Dave Revering and a walk to Mitchell Page loaded the bases before Wayne Gross delivered two tallies with a double. The third run came in on a squeeze bunt by Mike Davis. The A's added another marker in the eighth on an RBI single by Gross.
Mariners 5, Blue Jays 1 at Seattle (day game):
Scattering eight hits, Floyd Bannister pitched the Mariners to a 5-1 victory over the Blue Jays. The Mariners scored twice in the first inning on a safe bunt by Rodney Craig, single by Dan Meyer and double by Bruce Bochte. Bill Stein stroked run-scoring singles in the sixth and eighth.
[DH] Yankees 9, Rangers 4 (day game) / Yankees 8, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Big innings carried the Yankees to a doubleheader sweep of the Rangers, 9-4 and 8-2. The Yanks exploded for six runs in the fifth inning of the first game. A single by Rick Cerone, walk to Willie Randolph and single by Ruppert Jones loaded the bases. Two runs scored on a single by Oscar Gamble and after Bob Watson walked to reload the sacks, Jim Spencer followed with a grand-slam homer. The Yanks decided the second game with four runs in the fifth inning. Bucky Dent, Jones and Gamble hit singles for one tally and Jones scored when Pepe Frias bobbled a grounder by Reggie Jackson. After Watson walked to load the bases, starter Gaylord Perry was relieved by Dave Rajsich, who uncorked a wild pitch that allowed one run to score. Catcher Dave Roberts then threw wildly, permitting another run to cross the plate.
Reds 5, Braves 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
Rookie southpaw Charlie Leibrandt, making his first major league start, scattered five hits in pitching the Reds to a 5-0 victory over the Braves in a sweep of the four-game series. The Braves were shut out three times in the set. Singles by Dave Collins, Dave Concepcion and Dan Driessen, along with an error by Braves right fielder Gary Matthews, gave the Reds two runs in the third inning. They added three more in the sixth on a leadoff homer by Johnny Bench and two-run single by Ken Griffey.
Astros 4, Dodgers 2 at Houston (day game):
A two-run single by winning pitcher Ken Forsch highlighted the Astros' 4-2 triumph over the Dodgers. Singles by Jose Cruz, Denny Walling and Enos Cabell produced one run in the second inning. After a single by Jeff Leonard loaded the bases, Forsch followed with a blooper that fell in for a hit, driving in two runs. The Astros' final tally came in the third when Terry Puhi doubled, moved to third on an infield out and tallied on an infield hit by Cabell.
Mets 5, Cubs 0 at New York (day game):
Combining on a five-hitter, Pete Falcone and Neil Allen hurled the Mets to a 5-0 victory over the Cubs. Falcone yielded just two hits in six innings but was forced to leave the game after pulling a hamstring muscle running the bases. The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the second when John Stearns doubled, went to third on a single by Jerry Mo-ales and scored on a passed ball by catcher Barry Foote. Frank Taveras stroked a run-scoring single in the third and Morales drove in a tally with a double in the fifth.
Expos 5, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
A leadoff homer by Ellis Valentine in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Expos to a 5-4 decision over the Phillies. The Expos, who also had a two-run homer by Andre Dawson, held a 4-1 lead before the Phillies rallied to tie the score in the ninth. Valentine's smash in the 10th spoiled the debut of Lerrin LaGrow with the Phillies.
Giants 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
A dropped fly ball by Dave Winfield helped the Giants defeat the Padres, 3-1, for their first victory of the season. With one out in the sixth inning and the score tied, 1-1, Rennie Stennett singled. Milt May then lofted a routine fly near the right field line that Winfield muffed. Stennett reached third on the error and scored when Johnny LeMaster grounded out.
Pirates 3, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (day game):
Jim Rooker was the star of the game as the Pirates beat the Cardinals, 3-0. The lefthanded pitcher, who bats righthanded, blasted a two-run homer following a one-out walk to Phil Garner in the seventh inning. Rooker allowed only five hits but was removed with two men on base and one out in the Cards' half of the seventh. Enrique Romo and Grant Jackson finished. The Pirates scored their first run in the fifth on a throwing error by Garry Templeton, hence there was no game-winning RBI under the new scoring rule.
