Red Sox 3, Tigers 1 at Boston (day game):
The Red Sox recorded a home-opening victory by handing the Tigers their fourth straight loss, 3-1. The score was 1-1 when Jerry Remy led off the Red Sox sixth inning with a triple and scored on a groundout by Rick Burleson. Fred Lynn then provided insurance with a solo homer.

Twins 5, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Roy Smalley's three-run homer in the ninth inning lifted the Twins to a 5-3 triumph over the Angels. The Twins trailed, 3-1, going into the ninth when Danny Goodwin led off with a walk. Hosken Powell followed with a single before John Castino grounded into a forceout at third. Mike Cubbage then stroked a run-scoring single and Dave LaRoche relieved Mark Clear on the hill for the Angels. After Rob Wilfong struck out, Smalley belted a 1-1 pitch into the left field seats.

Mariners 7, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
A five-run uprising in the second inning triggered the Mariners to a 7-1 pasting of the A's. The Mariners loaded the bases after two outs and scored two runs on a single by Dan Meyer and two more on a triple by Bruce Bochte, who subsequently came across on a wild pitch.

Rangers 7, Indians 4 at Texas (night game):
Jorge Orta hit a grand slam for the Indians in the first inning, but the Rangers came back with a bases-loaded smash by Jim Sundberg in their half and gained a 7-4 victory. After Orta's blow, the Rangers used doubles by Mickey Rivers and Al Oliver to account for one run. Walks to Buddy Bell, Richie Zisk and Billy Sample forced in another tally and set the stage for Sundberg's blast.

Reds 6, Giants 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
Staging a Garrison finish, the undefeated Reds roared to their fifth victory, beating the Giants, 6-5. The Reds trailed, 5-1, going into the bottom of the ninth when Dave Concepcion began the winning surge with a single. George Foster flied out, but Johnny Bench singled Concepcion to third. After Ray Knight was safe at first on a fielder's choice, a single by Dan Driessen plated Concepcion and brought on Gary Lavelle in relief of starter Bob Knepper. Junior Kennedy singled home another run and pinch-hitter Ken Griffey walked to load the bases. Dave Collins then drilled a game-winning three-run triple.

Astros 5, Braves 4 at Houston (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Enos Cabell in the bottom of the ninth enabled the Astros to shade the winless Braves, 5-4. Cabell's blow scored Cesar Cedeno, who had led off the inning with his fourth hit of the game. The Braves trailed, 4-1, going into the top of the eighth, but rallied for three runs, with a two-run pinch-double by Jeff Burroughs the key hit.

Pirates 5, Cubs 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A solo homer by Bill Robinson off Bruce Sutter in the 10th inning enabled the Pirates to edge the Cubs, 5-4. Pirate reliever Kent Tekulve gained the decision, although giving up the Cubs' tying two runs in the ninth on singles by Bill Buckner, Dave Kingman and Ken Henderson and a pinch-double by Mike Vail.

Padres 2, Dodgers 1 at San Diego (night game):
Getting both their runs in the eighth, the Padres prevailed over the Dodgers, 2-1. The fame was scoreless when the Padres loaded the bases on walks to Ozzie Smith, Gene Richards and Dave Winfield. Smith scored on a wild pitch and Richards tallied on a sacrifice fly by Willie Montanez. The Dodgers counted in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Dusty Baker after an error by Richards.
