Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 12, Royals 2 at Baltimore (day game):
A record home-opener crowd of 50,199 enjoyed the Orioles' 12-2 thrashing of the Royals. A wild pitch gave the Orioles a run in the first inning and they scored three times in the second on two singles sandwiched around two walks and a two-run throwing error by second baseman Frank White. Rick Dempsey drilled a two-run homer in the sixth and Ken Singleton clouted a two-run round-tripper in the eighth.

Angels 3, Twins 1 at California (night game):
Stout hurling by Frank Tanana and a two-run homer by Brian Downing carried the Angels to a 3-1 decision over the Twins. Carney Lansford drilled a leadoff single in the second inning and Downing followed by ripping a 1-0 pitch over the left-center wall. Tanana, making his first start of the year, showed no effects of the tendinitis that sidelined him for two months last season.

White Sox 4, Yankees 3 at Chicago (night game):
A single by Chet Lemon drove in the winning run as the White Sox edged the Yankees, 4-3, in 14 innings. Bob Molinaro led off the 14th with a walk, stole second and reached third when pitcher Jim Kaat misplayed Harry Chappas' sacrifice bunt. After Alan Bannister was intentionally walked, Jim Morrison bounced into a home-to-first double play. Lamar Johnson was intentionally walked to reload the bases and Lemon followed with a liner to right, driving in Chappas.

A's 12, Mariners 3 at Oakland (night game):
Unleashing a barrage of extra-base hits, the A's routed the Mariners, 12-3. A three-run double by Tony Armas highlighted a five-run outburst in the fifth inning. Dave Revering connected for a three-run homer in the eighth. Dwayne Murphy and Wayne Gross also homered. The victory was credited to surprise starter Steve McCatty. The righthander, who was shelled for five runs in 1 2/3 innings the previous night, was pressed into service when scheduled starter Rick Langford suffered back spasms warming up.

Rangers 3, Indians 0 at Texas (night game):
Extending his scoreless streak to 18 innings, Jon Matlack pitched the Rangers over the Indians, 3-0. The Rangers opened the scoring in the second inning when Buddy Bell doubled, moved to third on a groundout and came in on a sacrifice fly by Billy Sample. Singles by John Ellis, Sample and Jim Sundberg accounted for a marker in the fourth and Bump Wills stroked an RBI single in the seventh.

Reds 8, Giants 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
The unbeaten Reds extended their winning streak to six games by pounding the Giants, 8-3. The Reds broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs on a single by Dave Collins, triple by Ken Griffey and infield out by George Foster. Cincy added three in the sixth on run-producing singles by Harry Spilman and Collins and an RBI double by Dave Concepcion.

Astros 6, Braves 2 at Houston (night game):
Behind the steady pitching of Joe Niekro, the Astros dealt the winless Braves their sixth consecutive defeat, 6-2. A single by Jeff Leonard, pass to Joe Morgan and singles by Jose Cruz and Enos Cabell produced two runs in the second inning before the Astros iced the game in the third with RBIs by Leonard, Julio Gonzalez, Cesar Cedeno and Morgan.

Expos 7, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Blasting off with five runs in their first turn at bat, the Expos thumped the Mets, 7-3. Three errors by the Mets contributed to the big inning. The first run came in on a sacrifice fly by Andre Dawson, the second on a double by Larry Parrish and the third on a misplay by shortstop Frank Taveras before Warren Cromartie climaxed the inning with a two-run homer. The Mets tied a club record with six errors in the game.

Padres 9, Dodgers 5 at San Diego (night game):
Pitcher Rick Wise's first major league hit since 1973, a two-run double in the second inning, triggered the Padres to a 9-5 victory over the Dodgers. Wise rifled his two-bagger off the left field wall to drive in Willie Montanez and Jerry Mumphrey, who were aboard on singles. The Padres picked up three runs in the third frame on a wild pitch, balk and sacrifice fly.

Cardinals 7, Phillies 2 at St. Louis (night game):
With Pete Vuckovich's second straight route-going performance, the Cardinals snapped a three-game skid with the 7-2 victory over the Phillies. The Cards scored in the fourth inning on a double by Garry Templeton and single by Keith Hernandez and made it 2-0 in the fifth on singles by Ken Reitz, Templeton and Tony Scott. The Redbirds salted the contest away in the sixth with three more runs, the first coming on a sacrifice fly by Reitz and the other two on a triple by Ken Oberkfell.
