Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Royals 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Orioles downed the Royals, 5-2. The Birds scored in the first inning on a two-run homer by Eddie Murray and added another pair in the fourth on a single by Murray, triple by Pat Kelly and single by John Lowenstein. Al Bumbry belted a solo homer in the fifth.

Red Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Boston (day game):
Carlton Fisk's homer in the 11th inning lifted the Red Sox to a 5-4 decision over the Tigers. With the score 4-4, Fisk slammed Aurelio Lopez' first pitch into the left field screen. The Tigers had tied the game in the seventh on a single by Champ Summers. The victory was the fourth straight for the Bosox while the Tigers suffered their sixth straight defeat.

White Sox 8, Yankees 6 at Chicago (day game):
Scoring five runs after two were out in the fifth inning, the White Sox went on to an 8-6 verdict over the Yankees. The rally began when Marv Foley doubled and moved to third on an infield single by Greg Pryor. Both runners scored on a two-bagger by Mike Squires, who took third on an errant relay throw and raced home when Alan Bannister beat out a bunt. Bannister moved to third on a double by Bob Molinaro and after an intentional walk to Lamar Johnson, a two-run single by Chet Lemon capped the outburst. Sox starter Britt Burns was credited with his first major league victory.

Mariners 4, Twins 3 at Seattle (night game):
Scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth, the Mariners shaded the Twins, 4-3. The winning tally developed when Larry Milbourne, pinch-running for Willie Horton, who had stroked a one-out single, went to third on a double by Bruce Bochte and continued home when right fielder Bombo Rivera misplayed the ball for an error. The Mariners had tied the score in the seventh when Bochte led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ted Cox.

Blue Jays 1, Brewers 0 at Toronto (day game):
Seven-hit pitching by Paul Mirabella and a ninth-inning homer by Rick Bosetti enabled the Blue Jays to shade the Brewers, 1-0. The shutout was Mirabella's first complete game in the majors.

Reds 4, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
The undefeated Reds recorded their eighth straight victory, 4-1, over the winless Braves behind the five-hit pitching of Frank Pastore. The Reds scored all their runs in the fourth inning on a pair of two-run homers. Dave Concepcion led off with a single and scored on a homer by Dan Driessen. Johnny Bench then walked and Ray Knight followed with a round-tripper.

Cubs 4, Mets 1 at Chicago (day game):
Carlos Lezcano's first major league hit, a two-run homer, highlighted the Cubs' 4-1 triumph over the Mets. Lezcano's blow came in the fifth inning following a single by Barry Foote, and gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead. A double by Jerry Martin in the sixth produced another marker and Mike Tyson concluded the scoring with a solo round-tripper in the seventh.

Dodgers 6, Astros 4 at Los Angeles (day game):
Ron Cey hit a two-run homer in the third inning and singled in a pair of tie-breaking runs in the eighth to pace the Dodgers to a 6-4 victory over the Astros before an L.A. opening-day crowd of 45,476. The score was 4-4 in the eighth when Steve Garvey singled and Dusty Baker doubled to set up Cey's game-winning blow.

Cardinals 12, Pirates 9 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Driving in six runs, George Hendrick sparked a 17-hit attack as the Cardinals outlasted the Pirates, 12-9, Bobby Bonds drove in one run and Hendrick two in a four-run first inning. A two-run double by Bonds highlighted a four-run second inning in which Hendrick had an RBI single. Hendrick's bases-loaded single plated two tallies in a three-run sixth and he added a solo homer in the eighth.

Giants 7, Padres 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Playing in his 18th San Francisco home opener, Willie McCovey drove in three runs with a double and two singles and Vida Blue pitched a complete game to lead the Giants to a 7-3 triumph over the Padres before 51,175.
