Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, White Sox 2 at Baltimore (night game):
There were only nine hits in the game, but eight were for extra bases as the Orioles defeated the White Sox, 5-2. The Orioles had homers by Eddie Murray, Al Bumbry and Ken Singleton? plus two doubles, in their total of five hits. The White Sox had four hits, including a homer by Chet Lemon and two doubles.

Rangers 6, Red Sox 5 at Boston (day game):
After hitting two homers, Buddy Bell doubled in the eighth inning to spark a two-run rally that brought the Rangers a 6-5 victory over the Red Sox, who were stopped on their four-game winning streak. Al Oliver, who also had a homer for the Rangers, doubled in the eighth and scored on Bell's two-bagger to knot the count at 5-5.

Royals 9, Tigers 6 at Detroit (night game):
Playing before a home-opening crowd, the Tigers suffered their seventh straight defeat, losing to the Royals, 9-6, in 11 innings. Willie Wilson tripled for his fourth hit of the game and, after a one-out intentional pass to George Brett, scored the Royals' tie-breaking run on a sacrifice fly by Willie Aikens. A double by Hal McRae and single by Pete LaCock added a pair of insurance counters.

Brewers 3, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
Doubles by Robin Yount and Jim Gantner, plus a single by Paul Molitor, produced two runs in the seventh inning and enabled the Brewers to spoil the Yankees' home opener, 3-2. Gorman Thomas homered for the Brewers' initial run in the fourth inning. The Yankees tied the score in their half on singles by Bob Watson and Lou Piniella around a passed ball. After the Brewers took the lead, the Yankees threatened in the eighth but had to settle for only one run on a pass to Oscar Gamble with the bases loaded.

A's 6, Angels 3 at Oakland (night game):
After the Angels took a 3-0 lead, Wayne Gross and Mitchell Page batted in two runs apiece to pace the A's to a 6-3 victory, extending their winning streak to three games. Gross homered and Page hit a sacrifice fly to account for their initial RBIs. Then each knocked in a run with a single when the A's erupted to score four times in the fifth inning.

[DH] Mariners 3, Twins 1 (night game) / Mariners 3, Twins 2 at Seattle (night game):
The Mariners scored only three runs in each half of a twi-night doubleheader, but that was enough to produce 3-1 and 3-2 victories over the Twins. Floyd Bannister was the winner of a six-hit duel with Roger Erickson in the opener. The Mariners scored all their runs in the second inning on singles by Bruce Bochte, Willie Horton and Joe Simpson, an interference call against Twins third baseman John Castino and a single by Larry Cox. The Mariners won the nightcap when they broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the sixth inning on a single by Rodney Craig, sacrifice by Dan Meyer and double by Bochte.

Braves 3, Reds 0 at Atlanta (night game):
With Rick Matula pitching a five-hit shutout, the Braves gained their first victory of the season and handed the Reds their first defeat, 3-0. The Braves had lost their first seven games, while the Reds had won their first eight. Jerry Royster doubled and Biff Pocoroba singled in the fourth inning for the only run that Matula needed, but the Braves added a counter in the fifth before Dale Murphy wrapped it up with a homer in the eighth.

Astros 7, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Two wild pitches by Bobby Castillo enabled the Astros to score the go-ahead run in a 7-4 victory over the Dodgers. Trailing, 3-2, the Astros began the seventh inning with the tying tally on a pass to Joe Morgan and singles by Jose Cruz and Enos Cabell. Castillo relieved Dave Goltz and uncorked his wild pitches, one allowing Cruz to take third and the other permitting him to cross the plate. The Astros clinched the decision with three more runs in the eighth.

Expos 7, Phillies 5 at Montreal (day game):
A homer by Gary Carter with two men on base was the big blow when the Expos rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Phillies, 7-5, in their home opener before 41,222. The Expos, who were trailing, 4-2, scored one run on a hit batsman, walk and single by Larry Parrish before Carter cracked his homer. Warren Cromartie followed with a single and pinch-runner Tony Bernazard scored the fifth run of the frame on a stolen base and a single by Chris Speier.

Pirates 12, Cardinals 10 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates, after scoring six runs in the first inning, failed to hold their lead but then came back to defeat the Cardinals, 12-10. The Cards had four homers -- two by Dane Iorg and one each by Ken Reitz and pinch-hitter Ted Simmons -- while the Pirates had only one, but it was a two-run blow by Dave Parker that put the Bucs back into the lead to stay. Parker, Bill Robinson, Tim Foli and Bill Madlock each had three of Pirates' 16 hits. Robinson and Madlock reached the 1,000-hit mark for their major league careers.

Giants 5, Padres 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Milt May knocked in two runs with a triple in the second inning and Larry Herndon added a pair with a double in the sixth to pace the Giants to a 5-2 victory over the Padres. Dave Winfield homered to account for the Padres' counters off Bob Knepper.
