Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 5, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
With two out in the 12th inning, Marv Foley hit a homer to give the White Sox a 5-4 victory over the Orioles, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. There were five homers in the game. The Orioles had consecutive clouts by Doug DeCinces and Gary Roenicke in the fourth inning and the White Sox retaliated with back-to-back blows by Jim Morrison and Harold Baines to kayo Jim Palmer in the seventh.

Rangers 8, Red Sox 0 at Boston (day game):
Two veterans, Gaylord Perry and Rusty Staub, joined forces to star as the Rangers defeated the Red Sox, 8-0. Perry, back with the Rangers after two years with San Diego, pitched a five-hitter and posted the 51st shutout and 280th victory of his major league career. Staub, who joined the Rangers from Montreal, hit the ninth grand-slam homer of his career.

Indians 8, Blue Jays 1 at Cleveland (day game):
With Rick Waits pitching a six-hitter, the Indians posted an 8-1 victory over the Blue Jays before a home-opening crowd of 61,753, largest in the major leagues this season. Ron Hassey drove in two of the Indians' runs with a double and Joe Charboneau accounted for two with a homer and single before Mike Hargrove ended the scoring with a three-run smash.

Tigers 8, Royals 6 at Detroit (day game):
Steve Kemp drove in four runs with a pair of homers to help the Tigers end their seven-game losing streak with an 8-6 victory over the Royals. After hitting a solo drive in the first inning, Kemp came up again in the seventh with the Tigers losing, 6-5, and connected for a three-run blow.

Brewers 5, Yankees 1 at New York (day game):
The Brewers continued their mastery of the Yankees with a 5-1 victory. Gorman Thomas knocked in the Brewers' initial run with a single in the first inning and added a pair with a bases-loaded single in the third. The triumph was the Brewers' second of the year over the Yankees, sixth straight over two seasons and 29th in 45 meetings over the last four years.

A's 3, Angels 1 at Oakland (day game):
The batting of Dave Revering and pitching of Mike Norris enabled the A's to defeat the Angels, 3-1, for their fourth straight victory. Revering batted in the A's first run with a double in the first inning and added their final tally after hitting another double in the sixth. Norris yielded only four hits in 8 1/3 innings before a leg injury forced the righthander's exit from the mound.

Twins 8, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
The Twins snapped a five-game losing streak with an 8-3 victory over the Mariners. Roy Smalley batted in two runs with a homer for the Twins and Rob Wilfong added two more with a single and homer. Jerry Koosman, who pitched 8 1/3 innings, beat the Mariners for the fifth straight time since coming to the Twins from the Mets last season.

Reds 6, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Bill Bonham gave up four hits in the first seven innings and Tom Hume yielded one more in the final two frames in the Reds' pitching collaboration that resulted in a 6-1 victory over the Braves. Ray Knight knocked in two of Reds' runs with a pair of singles. The Braves' lone tally came in the fourth on a homer by Chris Chambliss.

Cubs 12, Mets 9 at Chicago (day game):
Dave Kingman clouted two of the Cubs' five homers, including a grand slam that climaxed a seven-run outburst in the eighth inning and beat the Mets, 12-9. Kingman's first homer of the game came with a man on base in the sixth. The Mets passed Bill Buckner intentionally to load the bases in the eighth, hoping that Kingman again would hit into a double play as the Cubs' slugger did in the previous inning, but Kingman wrecked the strategy with his smash off Neil Allen.

Astros 2, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
J.R. Richard yielded only one hit -- a single on a slow infield roller by Reggie Smith in the fourth inning -- and pitched the Astros to a 2-0 victory over the Dodgers. The Astros' fastball pitcher struck out 12 and beat the Dodgers for the 13th straight time dating back to June 23, 1976. The Astros were held to two hits by Bob Welch, but put both of them together with a walk, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly for their runs in the fourth.

Phillies 13, Expos 4 at Montreal (day game):
After Bob Boone broke a 4-4 tie with a single in the sixth inning, the Phillies erupted for eight more runs in the last two frames to trounce the Expos, 13-4. Bake McBride batted in the Phillies' first four runs with a pair of singles. Greg Luzinski singled in the sixth, advanced to second on an error by Andre Dawson, took third on a wild pitch by Steve Rogers and scored the deciding run on Boone's hit.

Cardinals 2, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Keith Hernandez homered for the Cardinals' first run and then walked to set up the deciding counter in a 2-1 victory over the Pirates. John Fulgham held the Pirates to four hits. Bert Blyleven also gave up only four hits and struck out 12 before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning. Dave Roberts, replacing Blyleven, walked Hernandez to open the eighth. Bobby Bonds ran for Hernandez and took second on a single by Ted Simmons. Dane Iorg struck out trying to bunt. Enrique Romo replaced Roberts to face George Hendrick, who singled to drive in the deciding run.

Padres 3, Giants 0 at San Francisco (day game):
With help from Rollie Fingers in the ninth inning, Gary Lucas was a winner in his first major league start when the Padres defeated the Giants, 3-0. Fingers took over after Larry Herndon walked and Marc Hill singled with none out and preserved the shutout, setting down the side in order.
