Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 9, Orioles 6 at Baltimore (day game):
A three-run uprising in the ninth inning carried the White Sox to a 9-6 victory over the Orioles. The winning rally began with a two-bagger by Harold Baines, who scored on a single by Marv Foley. Mike Squires singled home another tally and the third scored on an error by center fielder Al Bumbry. After Eddie Murray tripled in the sixth inning, White Sox reliever Mike Proly hit the next batter, Doug DeCinces, with a pitch and the Orioles' third baseman charged the mound, igniting a bench-clearing brawl that led to his ejection.

Red Sox 6, Rangers 5 at Boston (day game):
Carl Yastrzemski stroked the game-winning hit as the Red Sox shaded the Rangers, 6-5, in 11 innings. The score was 5-5 in the 11th when Rick Burleson drew a one-out walk and raced to third on a single by Fred Lynn. After Jim Rice was walked intentionally, Yaz singled to right to end the game and make a winner of Tom Burgmeier, who pitched two-hit relief over the final 4 2/3 innings.

Blue Jays 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
A homer by Otto Velez with two men on base highlighted a four-run first inning that propelled the Blue Jays to a 5-3 decision over the Indians. Velez' blow came with two out following singles by Alfredo Griffin and Rick Bosetti. Barry Bonnell then doubled and Damaso Garcia singled for another run. Ron Hassey belted a three-run homer for the Tribe in the seventh.

Royals 9, Tigers 6 at Detroit (day game):
Scoring five runs in their first turn at bat, the Royals outlasted the Tigers, 9-6. Two-run doubles by Willie Aikens and Pete LaCock highlighted the big inning. George Brett blasted a solo homer in the second stanza. The Tigers registered five tallies in the bottom half of the second, with a two-run double by Alan Trammell being the key blow, but the Royals pulled away with a homer by U.L. Washington in the fourth. Renie Martin recorded his first major league victory with 3 2/3 innings of three-hit relief.

Yankees 9, Brewers 5 at New York (day game):
A four-run outburst in the eighth inning lifted the Yankees to a 9-5 triumph over the Brewers and ended the Bronx Bombers' three-game losing streak. The score was 5-5 in the eighth when Willie Randolph singled and Ruppert Jones was hit by a pitch. Bill Castro relieved Jerry Augustine on the mound for the Brewers and promptly made a throwing error on Bob Watson's sacrifice bunt, allowing Randolph and Jones to score. Reggie Jackson then followed with a two-run homer.

[DH] A's 6, Angels 1 (day game) / A's 8, Angels 2 at Oakland (night game):
The A's moved into first place in the A.L. West by sweeping a doubleheader from the Angels, 6-1 and 8-2. In the first game, Matt Keough, who managed only two victories last season, registered his third win in as many starts on a five-hitter as the A's collected 10 hits off four Angel pitchers. Dwayne Murphy drove in two runs and Dave Revering, Tony Armas and Rob Picciolo one each. In the nightcap, the A's got seven of their 12 hits off Frank Tanana and included among them were four bunt singles, one of which squeezed in a run. The A's also stole three bases, including a theft of home by Rickey Henderson, who drove in two runs with a triple.

Twins 4, Mariners 3 at Seattle (day game):
Mike Cubbage and Roy Smalley batted in two runs each to enable the Twins to edge the Mariners, 4-3. After Smalley accounted for an RBI with a double in the first inning, Cubbage belted a two-run homer in the fourth. Smalley added the deciding marker with a circuit clout in the eighth.

Reds 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (day game):
A two-run homer by George Foster proved decisive as the Reds defeated the Braves, 5-3. With the score 3-3 and two out in the eighth inning, Dave Concepcion reached first base on error by shortstop Larvell Blanks. Foster then ripped the ball into the left field seats.

Cubs 6, Mets 3 at Chicago (day game):
A run-scoring single by Ivan DeJesus keyed a three-run seventh-inning that paced the Cubs to a 6-3 decision over the Mets and a sweep of the three-game series. With the score 3-3, Mike Tyson led off the Chicago seventh by reaching first base on an error by third baseman Elliott Maddox, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mick Kelleher and scored on a single by DeJesus off reliever Kevin Kobel, who had replaced starter Craig Swan. After a walk to Steve Ontiveros, Bill Buckner singled to score DeJesus and when the ball went through the legs of center fielder Joel Youngblood, Ontiveros also came home.

Dodgers 4, Astros 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
An error by left fielder Jose Cruz paved the way for a two-run inning that enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Astros, 4-2. With the score 2-2, Jerry Reuss led off the Dodgers' eighth with a routine fly that Cruz dropped. After a sacrifice bunt by Davey Lopes, Reuss scored on a single by Rudy Law, who stole second. Dusty Baker was walked intentionally. The runners then worked a double steal to set up a sacrifice fly by Ron Cey.

Expos 7, Phillies 6 at Montreal (day game):
In a see-saw contest, the Expos finally prevailed over the Phillies, 7-6, by pushing across a run in the ninth inning. The game was tied, 6-6, going into the bottom of the ninth, when Andre Dawson led off with a base on balls. After Ellis Valentine struck out, Dawson moved to second on a single by Larry Parrish and reached third when center fielder Garry Maddox bobbled the ball. Gary Carter followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Dawson.

Pirates 6, Cardinals 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A three-run homer by Dave Parker climaxed a five-run second inning that carried the Pirates to a 6-3 victory over the Cardinals. The first two tallies were driven in on singles by Phil Garner and Tim Foli before Parker's clout. The Cards loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning, but Kent Tekulve struck out Tommy Herr and got Keith Hernandez to bounce into a forceout.

Giants 5, Padres 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Recording his first complete game in 37 starts, John Montefusco scattered eight hits in pitching the Giants to a 5-1 triumph over the Padres. The route-going performance was Montefusco's first since August 2, 1978, and the victory was his first since July 29, 1979. Darrell Evans homered and Larry Herndon hit a triple and double to lead the Giants attack.
