Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 2, Red Sox 0 at Boston (day game):
Rookie starter Britt Burns and reliever Mike Proly combined on a six-hitter in the White Sox' 2-0 triumph over the Red Sox. The White Sox scored both runs in the sixth inning. Claudell Washington stroked a leadoff double, moved to third on an infield out and tallied on a single by Wayne Nordhagen. After Chet Lemon was hit by a pitch, a double by Jim Morrison plated Nordhagen.

Royals 7, Blue Jays 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Rapping out four hits and knocking in three runs, John Wathan paced the Royals to a 7-2 victory over the Blue Jays. A double by Wathan drove home the first tally in a three-run second inning and Wathan also collected run-scoring singles in the sixth and eighth.

Brewers 8, Indians 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
A four-run outburst in the sixth inning lifted the Brewers over the Indians, 8-4. The Brewers trailed, 4-3, when Sixto Lezcano led off the sixth with a single. After one out, a walk to Don Money and single by Charlie Moore loaded the bases. A single by Paul Molitor scored Lezcano. Robin Yount then singled in two more runs and a bases-loaded walk to Ben Oglivie produced the final tally of the frame.

Twins 8, Angels 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Scattering six hits, Geoff Zahn pitched the Twins to an 8-1 victory over the Angels in Minnesota's home opener. The loss was the fifth straight for the Angels, who were winless on the road. The Twins picked up two runs in the first inning on a homer by Roy Smalley and got solo round-trippers from Hosken Powell in the fifth and Ron Jackson in the eighth.

Yankees 5, Orioles 4 at New York (night game):
The Yankees rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to edge the Orioles, 5-4. With the Yanks trailing, 4-3, Ruppert Jones drilled a leadoff double and scored on a single by Bob Watson. After a walk to Reggie Jackson and a flyout, Bobby Murcer delivered a single to score Watson with the winning run.

Mariners 5, A's 4 at Seattle (night game):
The Mariners ended the A's seven-game winning streak, fashioning a 5-4 victory with a two-run homer by Bill Stein in the eighth inning proving decisive. After the A's assumed a 4-3 lead in the top of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Dwayne Murphy, Stein connected for the circuit with one out and Larry Milbourne on base. Mariners starter Rick Honeycutt upped his record to 3-0.

Tigers 2, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
Dave Rozema recorded his first complete game of the season in pitching the Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the Rangers, with the scoring help of a two-run homer by Kirk Gibson. The rookie, who had only one hit in his last 28 at-bats entering the game, drilled a low liner that just cleared the fence in left-center. The clout drove home Alan Trammell, who was aboard via a single.

Braves 3, Padres 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Playing at third base in place of Bob Horner, who was sent to the minors, Larvell Blanks belted a homer in the 10th inning to lift the Braves to a 3-2 triumph over the Padres. Reliever Bob Shirley threw just one pitch -- the ball Blanks drove over the left field fence. The Padres had tied the game in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Gene Tenace.

Cubs 16, Cardinals 12 at Chicago (day game):
A grand-slam homer by Barry Foote in the ninth inning -- his second round-tripper of the game --enabled the Cubs finally to prevail, 16-12, in a Pier 6 donnybrook with the Cardinals. The Redbirds led, 12-6, at one stage, but the Cubs came back and eventually tied the game, 12-12, on a solo homer by Foote in the eighth. The wild affair featured 39 hits, including six homers.

Astros 8, Reds 0 at Houston (night game):
Combining on a six-hitter, Nolan Ryan and Dave Smith pitched the Astros to an 8-0 victory over the Reds. Jose Cruz led the Houston attack with five RBIs, including a bases-loaded triple in the first inning and two-run double in the fourth.

Dodgers 6, Giants 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Posting his 51st career shutout, Don Sutton pitched the Dodgers to a 6-0 victory over the Giants. Steve Garvey drove in four runs with a run-scoring single in the third inning, two-run homer in the fifth and sixth-inning sacrifice fly.

Pirates 5, Expos 3 at Montreal (day game):
Appearing in the starting lineup for the first time this season, Mike Easler cracked two homers and drove in four runs as the Pirates defeated the Expos, 5-3. The Pirates scored four times in their first turn at bat. Omar Moreno tripled and scored on a single by Tim Foli. After Dave Parker singled, Easler blasted a round-tripper. The left fielder later connected for a solo clout in the fifth.

Phillies 14, Mets 8 at Philadelphia (night game):
Mike Schmidt crashed a pair of homers, including a bases-loaded clout in the eighth inning, as the Phillies outslugged the Mets, 14-8. The game was tied, 8-8, in the eighth when Larry Bowa and Luis Aguayo each stroked one-out singles. Keith Moreland then drove home both runners with a pinch-double. Walks to Pete Rose and Garry Maddox loaded the sacks and set the stage for Schmidt's big blow. Schmidt's initial round-tripper came in the first with a mate aboard.
