Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 9, Red Sox 3 at Boston (day game):
Driving in four runs with a homer, single and grounder, Lamar Johnson paced the White Sox to a 9-3 triumph over the Red Sox. The first baseman stroked an RBI single in the first inning and two-run round-tripper in the third. With the game tied, 3-3, in the seventh and with runners on first and third, Johnson's grounder to third eluded Butch Hobson to give the White Sox a 4-3 edge. One out later, Hobson booted Jim Morrison's grounder, permitting another run to score. The White Sox added three more runs in the eighth, two on a double by Alan Bannister and one on a single by Bruce Kimm.

Braves 8, Padres 7 at Atlanta (night game):
A two-run single by Brian Asselstine climaxed a ninth-inning rally that carried the Braves to an 8-7 victory over the Padres. With one out and with the Braves trailing, 7-6, Larvell Blanks singled to knock out Bob Shirley and bring on Rollie Fingers, the Padres' ace reliever. Dale Murphy hit what appeared to be a certain double-play grounder, but Dave Cash missed touching second base and Blanks was called safe, although Murphy was out at first. After Chris Chambliss beat out a slow roller that moved Blanks to third, Jeff Burroughs followed with a run-scoring infield hit. Asselstine then tagged an 0-1 pitch for the game-winner.

Dodgers 5, Giants 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Dusty Baker slammed a three-run homer in the 10th inning to lift the Dodgers to a 5-2 decision and drop the Giants into last place in the N.L. West. The score was 2-2 going into the bottom of the 10th when Reggie Smith cracked a one-out single, bringing on Randy Moffitt in relief of Gary Lavelle. Steve Garvey greeted the new pitcher with a single and Baker then lashed the ball into the left field seats.
