Today's scores and summaries:
Rangers 4, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Breaking a 1-1 tie, Richie Zisk drove in two runs with a two-out, bases-loaded single in the ninth inning as the Rangers defeated the Indians, 4-1. Cleveland starter Rick Waits, who retired 20 straight batters at one stretch of the game, gave up a single by Mickey Rivers with one out in the ninth. Bump Wills singled Rivers to third and stole second after Al Oliver struck out. The Indians then decided to pass Buddy Bell intentionally in a move that failed when Zisk singled. Billy Sample followed with a double for an extra run.
Tigers 11, Red Sox 3 at Detroit (day game):
After losing his first three starts, Dan Schatzeder picked up his first A.L. victory when the Tigers defeated the Red Sox, 11-3. Steve Kemp hit a two-run homer for the Tigers in the first inning and walked with the bases loaded to add another RBI when the Tigers erupted for seven runs in the fifth. Dennis Eckersley, the Red Sox loser, was tossed out of the game by umpire Jim McKean for use of abusive language.
Royals 7, Orioles 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Handed a six-run lead in the first inning, Larry Gura proceeded to pitch the Royals to a 7-0 victory over the Orioles, who suffered their sixth straight defeat. Willie Wilson doubled and Frank White singled to start the Royals' scoring. George Brett knocked in White with a triple and counted himself on a double by Hal McRae. Pete LaCock then was safe on an error by Oriole second baseman Rich Dauer before Clint Hurdle climaxed the inning with three runs on the Royals' first homer in eight home games.
Blue Jays 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Alfredo Griffin hit two triples plus a single as the Blue Jays' leading batter in a 5-3 victory over the Brewers. Griffin opened the game with a triple and scored on an infield out by Rick Bosetti. Griffin's single plated a Blue Jay run in the second. After the Brewers tied the score, Ernie Whitt batted in a run with a single in the fourth and Griffin followed with his second triple of the game to clinch the decision.
Twins 10, A's 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Matt Keough, who had won three straight games, failed to last the first inning as the Twins defeated the A's, 10-3. Keough walked the bases loaded and then gave up four runs, one on a groundout by Glenn Adams, two on a double by Butch Wynegar and one on a single by Mike Cubbage. The Twins turned on the power in the fifth with a two-run homer by Jose Morales and three-run drive by Rick Sofield. The A's had homers by Rob Picciolo, Jeff Newman and Wayne Gross, all with the bases empty.
White Sox 6, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
The Yankees were stopped on their four-game winning streak when they failed to score against Steve Trout and lost to the White Sox, 6-0. The White Sox decided the outcome with two runs in the first inning. Claudell Washington singled and took third on a single by Alan Bannister, who moved to second on the throw. Washington scored on an infield out by Bob Molinaro and Bannister counted on a sacrifice fly by Lamar Johnson.
Angels 4, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
After driving in a run with a single in the second inning, Joe Rudi smashed a homer with a man on base in the sixth to lead the Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Mariners. Rudi's RBIs put the Angels ahead, 3-1, and they added another run on a single by Carney Lansford in the seventh before Bruce Bochte delivered a two-run double for the Mariners in the ninth.
Braves 8, Expos 7 at Atlanta (night game):
Although Larry Parrish hit three homers and drove in seven runs, the Expos still lost to the Braves, 8-7, in 11 innings. Parrish connected with two men on base in the first inning and with one aboard in the fourth and ninth, marking the third time in his career that he had hit three homers in one game. The Braves, who got three RBIs from Luis Gomez, won in the 11th when Jerry Royster walked, Larvell Blanks sacrificed and, after a pass to Dale Murphy, Chris Chambliss hit a ground-rule double to left-center.
Cubs 5, Pirates 3 at Chicago (day game):
Shut out for six innings, the Cubs erupted for four runs in the seventh and defeated the Pirates, 5-3, Jerry Martin singled, Barry Foote doubled, Carlos Lezcano hit a sacrifice fly and Mick Kelleher singled to tie the score at 2-2. Steve Dillard then batted for Rick Reuschel and singled to put the Cubs ahead and Lenny Randle followed with a single for another run. Dave Kingman homered for insurance in the eighth.
Astros 7, Mets 4 at Houston (night game):
J.R. Richard yielded only three hits in 8 1/3 innings and gained the 100th victory of his major league career when the Astros defeated the Mets, 7-4. Dave Smith relieved Richard with two Mets on base and gave up a two-run double by Jerry Morales before getting the final two outs. The Astros piled up 12 hits in support of Richard, including Jeff Leonard's first major league homer.
Dodgers 6, Padres 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run homer by Steve Garvey powered the Dodgers to a 6-3 victory over the Padres, extending their winning streak to six games. The Dodgers trailed, 3-0, before Reggie Smith and Dusty Baker homered in the fourth inning. With two out in the seventh, avey Lopes singled and crossed the plate on a pinch-double by Pedro Guerrero, tying the score. The Padres then passed Smith intentionally before Garvey crashed his homer.
Cardinals 3, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Two homers by George Hendrick lifted the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory behind the pitching of Pete Vuckovich, who beat the Phillies for the seventh straight time. Hendrick snapped a 1-1 tie with his first round-tripper in the fourth inning and then provided an insurance run with his second smash in the sixth. Vuckovich, who brought his career record against the Phils to 7-2, faltered in the ninth and needed help from Bob Sykes and Mark Littell to preserve his victory.
Giants 4, Reds 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Hitting his third single, Darrell Evans drove in his third run of the game with one out in the ninth inning to give the Giants a 4-3 victory over the Reds. Roger Metzger walked and Terry Whitfield sacrificed. The Reds then passed Bill North intentionally in a strategy that backfired when Evans connected for his winning single.
