Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 7, Rangers 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Taking advantage of Rangers' errors, the Indians posted a 7-4 victory in a game played in steady rain. In the fourth inning, Toby Harrah reached first on shortstop Nelson Norman's wild throw, took third on a single by Mike Hargrove and scored on a double by Cliff Johnson. A single by Jorge Orta plated Hargrove and Johnson also came home on the play when center fielder Mickey Rivers misplayed the ball. A two-out single by Tom Veryzer capped the four-run outburst. The Tribe picked up two more markers in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Hargrove and Joe Charboneau.

Tigers 8, Red Sox 5 at Detroit (day game):
Steve Kemp and Alan Trammell knocked in two runs apiece to lead the Tigers to an 8-5 victory over the Red Sox. The Tigers scored in their first turn at bat when Lou Whitaker walked, moved to third on a double by Kirk Gibson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kemp. Consecutive singles by Lance Parrish, John Wockenfuss, Trammell and Whitaker and Kemp's second sacrifice fly accounted for three runs in the second inning. Trammell connected for a solo round-tripper in the fourth.

Royals 3, Orioles 2 at Kansas City (day game):
Raising his record to 3-0 with his first complete game of the season, Paul Splittorff scattered six hits in hurling the Royals to a 3-2 triumph over the Orioles. The Royals scored the winning run in the seventh inning when John Wathan drilled a one-out triple and crossed the plate on a single by Jamie Quirk, filling in at third base for George Brett, who was sidelined with a bruised heel.

Blue Jays 8, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Blue Jays thumped the Brewers, 8-2. The Jays scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Alfredo Griffin and then exploded for five runs in the sixth. Singles by Rick Bosetti, Al Woods and Otto Velez produced one run and Willie Upshaw followed with a two-run double. Barry Bonnell then climaxed the rally with a two-run homer.

Twins 20, A's 11 at Minnesota (day game):
In an affair reminiscent of single men playing the married men at a company picnic, the Twins outlasted the A's, 20-11, after scoring 10 runs in the first inning. The first two Minnesota runs were driven in on a single by Glenn Adams, who was replaced later in that same inning by pinch-hitter Jose Morales, who singled home the final two runs of the frame. John Castino belted a two-run triple in the first inning and drove in another pair of markers in the third with a single.

Yankees 1, White Sox 0 at New York (day game):
Tommy John tossed a six-hitter and Willie Randolph knocked in a run as the Yankees shaded the White Sox, 1-0. The Yanks scored in the fifth inning. Graig Nettles and Rick Cerone singled and were sacrificed along by Fred Stanley. Randolph followed with a single to plate Nettles.

Mariners 7, Angels 3 at Seattle (day game):
Glenn Abbott scattered eight hits and Dan Meyer drove in three runs to pace the Mariners to a 7-3 triumph over the Angels. A sacrifice fly by Meyer scored Joe Simpson with the tying run in the third inning and Bruce Bochte followed with an RBI single to put the Mariners ahead, 3-2. They picked up three more runs in the fifth, two on a homer by Meyer.

Braves 6, Expos 3 at Atlanta (day game):
A three-run outburst in the first inning propelled the Braves to a 6-3 triumph over the Expos. Chris Chambliss ripped an RBI double in the opening frame, Jeff Burroughs added a run-scoring single and Brian Asselstine delivered a sacrifice fly. A single by Dale Murphy produced another tally in the second inning and the Braves finished their scoring in the sixth with a triple by Jerry Royster and homer by Murphy.

Astros 4, Mets 3 at Houston (day game):
Rallying for two runs in the bottom of the 12th inning, the Astros edged the Mets, 4-3, After a sacrifice fly by Jerry Morales gave the Mets a 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th, Cesar Cedeno drew a one-out walk and reached third on a double by Alan Ashby. Pinch-hitter Art Howe received an intentional walk, but Jeff Leonard spoiled the strategy by lashing a single off the right-center fence to plate Cedeno and Ashby and end the game.

Dodgers 3, Padres 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
The Dodgers won their eighth straight game, beating the Padres, 3-1. The loss was San Diego's seventh straight. Davey Lopes gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a homer and Steve Yeager upped the margin to 2-0 with an RBI single in the second stanza.

Cardinals 10, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
Showing the form that made him the league's 1979 batting champion, Keith Hernandez went 5-for-5 to spark the Cardinals in a 10-1 rout of the Phillies. The first baseman stroked a single in the first inning to score Garry Templeton, who had opened the game with a three-bagger. He also singled to start a two-run third frame and drove in a pair of markers with a bases-loaded single in the fifth. Ken Oberkfell hit a two-run inside-the-park homer in the seventh.

Reds 3, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
