Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 7, Yankees 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Doug DeCinces homered with a man on base in the second inning as the Orioles scored six runs on only four hits to defeat the Yankees, 7-4. DeCinces hit his homer after a pass to Eddie Murray. Gary Roenicke followed with a double and Rick Dempsey was safe on a fielder's choice. Yankee first baseman Jim Spencer threw wild to the plate on a grounder by Mark Belanger as Roenicke scored. Al Bumbry singled to drive in Dempsey. A wild throw by second baseman Willie Randolph on a grounder by Rich Dauer allowed Belanger to score. Murray, up for a second time, then singled to drive in Dauer.
Angels 2, A's 1 at California (night game):
After losing their first six games against the A's this season, the Angels bounced back to gain a 2-1 victory in a duel between Don Aase and Matt Keough. Aase gave up four singles and a only run against him was unearned. Tom Donohue, filling in for an injured Brian Downing, was the Angels' key batter with two of their five hits off Keough. In the third inning, Larry Harlow singled, stopped at third on a double by Donohue and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rick Miller. After the A's tied the score in the fifth, the Angels racked up their winning run in the seventh when Freddie Patek tripled and Donohue sent him home with a single.
White Sox 2, Red Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Alan Bannister walked with two out in the eighth inning, stole second and scored on a single by Harold Baines to bring the White Sox a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox. Mike Squires homered for the White Sox in the fifth. Carlton Fisk tied the score with a round-tripper for the Red Sox in the seventh.
Tigers 5, Rangers 4 at Detroit (day game):
When the Rangers changed relievers in the 10th inning, Lance Parrish swung at Danny Darwin's first pitch and singled, driving in pinch-runner Tom Brookens, to give the Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Rangers. Sparky Lyle was on the mound at the start of the stanza and gave up a single by Richie Hebner and a pass to Dave Stegman. Brookens ran for Stegman. After two out, Darwin, who throws righthanded, took over to face Parrish, a righthanded hitter, in a pitching change that failed.
Twins 10, Mariners 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Roy Smalley cracked three hits in three official trips, including his sixth homer of the season, to pace the Twins to a 10-3 victory over the Mariners. One of Smalley's hits literally knocked Mariner starter Mike Parrott out of the game. A one-hop smash by Smalley struck Parrott, who was taken to the hospital with a severe groin bruise. Butch Wynegar and Rick Sofield had two hits each and drove in two runs apiece for the Twins.
Royals 3, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (night game):
Allowing only one hit, Larry Gura pitched the Royals to a 3-0 victory over the Blue Jays. It was Gura's third shutout in five starts. Damaso Garcia led off the seventh inning with a double to wreck Gura's no-hit bid. Loser Jesse Jefferson also flirted with a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings before giving up a single by Hal McRae. The Royals broke up the scoreless duel in the eighth when John Wathan singled and, after two out, Clint Hurdle homered. McRae added a round-tripper in the ninth for an insurance run.
Astros 5, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
J.R. Richard hit one of the Astros' three homers and gained his fourth straight victory with a 5-1 decision over the Reds. The fireballer developed stiffness in his shoulder in the eighth and Dave Smith finished the game. Cesar Cedeno and Richard homered in the fifth inning and Joe Morgan in the sixth, accounting for three of five hits off Tom Seaver before the Reds' starter left the mound.
Mets 2, Phillies 0 at New York (night game):
A rookie at 27 years of age, Mark Bomback allowed only two hits and pitched the Mets to a 2-0 victory, beating the Phillies for the second time in his second start. The Mets decided the outcome at the expense of Randy Lerch when John Stearns doubled and Dan Norman singled for a run in the fourth inning.
Pirates 5, Expos 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Celebrating his 31st birthday, Phil Garner smashed two homers and drove in three runs as the Pirates defeated the Expos, 5-0, behind the pitching of Jim Bibby. Omar Moreno tripled and Tim Foli hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning for the initial run. Garner hit a two-run drive in the second and Bill Robinson added a solo shot in the third before Garner wrapped up the scoring with his second homer in the sixth.
Padres 2, Braves 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Braves. Walks to Dave Cash and Gene Tenace paved the way for Padres' runs in the fourth inning. After Dave Winfield forced Tenace, Cash scored on a single by Willie Montanez and Winfield crossed the plate on a double by Jerry Mumphrey. Gary Matthews hit a pinch-homer for the Braves' tally.
Dodgers 4, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
The Dodgers rallied for two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Giants, 4-3, for their 10th straight victory. After Darrell Evans homered in the eighth to put the Giants ahead, 3-2, the Dodgers began the ninth with pinch-singles by Jay Johnstone and Gary Thomasson. Mickey Hatcher sacrificed. Davey Lopes was safe on a grounder that was fumbled by Giants shortstop Johnny LeMaster as pinch-runner Derrel Thomas scored. Thomasson moved to third and scored the winning run on an infield grounder by Rudy Law.
Cardinals 8, Cubs 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Ken Oberkfell and Keith Hernandez batted in three runs apiece and Garry Templeton rapped four hits in five trips as the Cardinals defeated the Cubs, 8-2. Hernandez accounted for his RBIs with a homer in the sixth inning. Jim Kaat, acquired from the Yankees, made his first appearance in a Cardinal uniform and retired the last five batters after relieving winner Pete Vuckovich.
