Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 6, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
After hitting a two-run triple in the third inning, George Brett walked with the bases loaded in the sixth to force in the Royals' deciding run in a 6-5 victory over the Red Sox. In the sixth, after the Royals picked up a run to make the score 5-2, the Red Sox walked Hal McRae intentionally to get at Brett. But the move backfired when reliever Tom Burgmeier passed Brett on four pitches. Dwight Evans hit a homer for the Red Sox in the seventh to spark a rally that fell short with three runs.

Tigers 6, Angels 5 at California (night game):
A homer by Jason Thompson in the 10th inning lifted the Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Angels. Carney Lansford homered with two men on base and Bobby Grich, who had four hits, contributed two RBIs with a homer and single in the Angels' scoring. The Tigers took a 5-4 lead in the ninth on a walk to Dave Stegman, single by Kirk Gibson and sacrifice fly by Alan Trammell, but the Angels sent the game into overtime with a double by Dan Ford and single by Grich that scored pinch-runner Bert Campaneris.

Orioles 5, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
After Sixto Lezcano drove in two runs for the Brewers with a single in the first inning, the Orioles came back behind the batting of Rich Dauer and Mark Belanger, who had two RBIs apiece, to gain a 5-2 victory. Dauer accounted for his pair with a sacrifice fly and single, while Belanger rapped two singles. Belanger's second hit in the ninth inning scored Dauer, who had doubled.

Yankees 5, Twins 2 at New York (night game):
Bob Watson drove in all of the Yankees' runs to escort Ron Guidry to a 5-2 victory over the Twins. Watson homered in the first inning after Willie Randolph singled and Ruppert Jones was safe when his bunt attempt was fumbled by Jerry Koosman. The Twins' starter departed with two men on base in the eighth and Watson greeted reliever John Verhoeven with a two-run double. Guidry lost his bid for a shutout when Willie Norwood hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning.

Indians 4, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
A homer by Joe Charboneau with a man on base capped the Indians' scoring stanza in a 4-1 victory over the Mariners. In the fourth inning, Mike Hargrove extended his batting streak to 19 games with a single. Toby Harrah and Cliff Johnson followed with singles, scoring Hargrove. Harrah also crossed the plate when Mariner left fielder Dan Meyer fumbled Johnson's hit. But that run became earned and the Indians' lead mounted to 4-0 when Charboneau hit his homer, scoring behind Johnson. The Mariners avoided a shutout when Leon Roberts connected for the circuit off Dan Spillner in the eighth inning.

Rangers 2, White Sox 1 at Texas (night game):
Richie Zisk homered in the second inning to tie the score at 1-1 and then hit for the circuit again in the 11th to give the Rangers a 2-1 victory over the White Sox. Bob Molinaro homered in the first inning for the White Sox.

Braves 5, Astros 4 at Atlanta (night game):
The Astros hit four homers, but still lost to the Braves, who gained a 5-4 victory with the help of only one circuit clout. Terry Puhl poked two homers and Joe Morgan and Rafael Landestoy banged one apiece for the Astros. The Braves took a 3-1 lead in the first inning and then decided the outcome when Brian Asselstine homered with a man on base in the sixth.

Giants 6, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
When John Montefusco came down with a sore throat prior to the game, Vida Blue took the starting assignment and pitched the Giants to a 6-3 victory over the Cubs. Blue was tagged for 11 hits but generally kept them scattered. Jim Wohlford whacked his first N. L. homer for the Giants and Jack Clark drove in three runs, getting credit for one RBI by drawing a pass with the bases loaded and rapping a pair of singles to produce the other two.

Reds 5, Phillies 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
A triple by Sam Mejias with the bases loaded in the fifth inning carried the Reds to a 5-2 victory over the Phillies behind the pitching of Charlie Leibrandt. Mejias, subbing for the injured George Foster, came through with his big hit after the Reds had filled the sacks on a single by Johnny Bench and passes to Junior Kennedy and Dan Driessen.

Mets 2, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
Craig Swan allowed only three hits, all singles, and pitched the Mets to a 2-1 victory over the Expos. The Mets scored their first run off Steve Rogers in the third inning on doubles by Joel Youngblood and Lee Mazzilli. The Expos tied the score in the fourth when Rodney Scott singled, stole second, advanced to third on an infield out and came home on a sacrifice fly by Ellis Valentine. Rogers hit Mazzilli with a pitch in the fifth, leading to the Mets' winning run. Mazzilli stole second, took third on a flyout by Mike Jorgensen and scored on a single by Steve Henderson.

Pirates 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Bill Madlock tied the score with a homer in the eighth inning and won the game with a sacrifice fly in the ninth to enable Kent Tekulve to gain his fifth straight victory as the Pirates defeated the Padres, 4-3. Bill Robinson also homered for the Pirates, who held a 2-0 lead until the Padres rallied for three runs in the seventh, two scoring on a round-tripper by Gene Tenace. After Madlock's homer in the eighth, Omar Moreno doubled to open the ninth and was sacrificed to third by Phil Garner. The Padres then walked both Dave Parker and Willie Stargell intentionally to load the bases, hoping to set up a double play, but Madlock wrecked the move with a long fly to center field.

Cardinals 15, Dodgers 7 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals piled up 18 hits, with every starting player participating in the attack, to mark a 15-7 victory over the Dodgers. Ted Simmons batted in five runs and Garry Templeton and George Hendrick accounted for three apiece. Each hit a homer.
