Red Sox 5, Royals 2 at Boston (day game):
A two-run homer by Fred Lynn climaxed a three-run outburst in the third inning that propelled the Red Sox to a 5-2 triumph over the Royals. With the score tied, 1-1, in the third, Dwight Evans walked, went to second on an infield out and scored on a single by Rick Burleson. Lynn followed with his round-tripper.

Tigers 4, Angels 0 at California (day game):
Tossing a four-hitter, Dan Petry recorded his first major league shutout as the Tigers downed the Angels, 4-0, handing California its sixth straight loss. The Tigers scored twice in the second inning on a walk to Richie Hebner, singles by Champ Summers and Jason Thompson and a double-play grounder. Consecutive singles by Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell and Kirk Gibson produced a run in the fifth inning and Trammell's sacrifice fly delivered the final tally in the seventh.

Brewers 5, Orioles 4 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers pushed across a run in the seventh inning to edge the Orioles, 5-4. Dick Davis led off the stanza with an infield single, raced to third on a single by Larry Hisle and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Sal Bando. Lee May drilled a three-run triple for the Orioles in the first inning, but Hisle countered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame.

Yankees 5, Twins 0 at New York (day game):
Recording his third shutout of the season and sixth victory without a defeat, Tommy John pitched the Yankees to a 5-0 decision over the Twins. The Yankees scored in the second inning on a single by Rick Cerone, a wild pitch and single by Graig Nettles. Ruppert Jones hit a sacrifice fly after a triple by Bobby Brown in the fifth and stroked a two-run single in the seventh.

A's 12, Blue Jays 1 at Oakland (day game):
Mike Norris, yielding only one unearned run, lowered his league-leading ERA to 0.36 and boosted his record to 5-0 as the A's routed the Blue Jays, 12-1. The first 15 A's hits were singles before Mike Heath clouted a two-run homer in the sixth. The A's scored three runs in the first inning on four singles and two sacrifice flies. Dwayne Murphy had three hits and three RBIs and Tony Armas had three hits.

Mariners 9, Indians 4 at Seattle (day game):
The Mariners defeated the Indians, 9-4, snapping the Tribe's four-game winning streak. The M's scored four runs in the first inning with Dan Meyer contributing an RBI double and Joe Simpson a two-run single. Four more runs followed in the fourth on a two-run double by Bob Stinson and RBIs by Jim Anderson and Meyer. Mike Hargrove led off the Cleveland fourth with a homer, extending his hitting streak to 21 games. Jorge Orta was stopped on his 17-game streak.

Rangers 5, White Sox 1 at Texas (night game):
Combining on a six-hitter, Doc Medich and Sparky Lyle hurled the Rangers to a 5-1 triumph over the White Sox. The Rangers registered three runs in the second inning. Buddy Bell smacked a leadoff double and scored on a single by John Ellis. Richie Zisk followed with a two-bagger that plated Ellis and he later came home as Pepe Frias grounded into a double play. A sacrifice fly by Ellis drove in a fifth-inning run and the final marker came in the sixth frame on a double by Frias.

Braves 7, Astros 4 at Atlanta (day game):
Phil Niekro picked up his 220th career victory in outdueling his brother Joe as the Braves posted a 7-4 triumph over the Astros. The score was tied, 2-2, when the Braves took the lead in the fifth inning. Bob Horner reached second on an error by Enos Cabell and scored on a single by Gary Matthews. The Braves upped the margin to 7-2 in the sixth. Luis Gomez drilled a two-run double to knock out Joe Niekro and, one out later, Jerry Royster smacked a two-run triple off reliever Vern Ruhle.

Giants 3, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Scattering seven hits, Ed Whitson pitched the Giants' first shutout since July 30, 1979, beating the Cubs, 3-0. The Giants scored all their runs in the sixth inning. Larry Herndon opened with a double and came home on a single by Darrell Evans. After two out, singles by Rennie Stennett, Johnnie LeMaster and Whitson added a pair of insurance tallies.

Phillies 7, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Pete Rose stole three bases in one inning to feature the Phillies' 7-3 victory over the Reds. In the seventh, Rose walked, stole second and third and scored on a double steal after a pass to Mike Schmidt.

Padres 5, Pirates 0 at San Diego (day game):
Using only 85 pitches, Randy Jones hurled the Padres to a 5-0 victory over the Pirates for his second straight shutout. Jones ran his string to 30 2/3 successive innings without issuing a walk. The Padres scored three times in the first inning on singles by Dave Cash, Gene Tenace, Dave Winfield and Jerry Mumphrey, whose hit drove in a pair of runs. Pinch-hitter Von Joshua singled home the final two markers in the eighth.

Dodgers 4, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
A four-run first inning carried the Dodgers to a 4-2 victory over the Cardinals. After the first two batters in the first inning were retired, Jay Johnstone walked and Steve Garvey reached first on an error by shortstop Garry Templeton. Back-to-back singles by Ron Cey and Gary Thomasson produced two runs and Bill Russell capped the outburst with a two-run triple.
