Today's scores and summaries:
Rangers 5, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Exploding for four runs in the first inning, the Rangers went on to a 5-1 victory over the Orioles behind the steady pitching of Jon Matlack. Al Oliver and Pat Putnam drove in the first two runs of the opening frame and Richie Zisk capped the rally with a two-run homer. Jim Sundberg completed the Texas scoring with a solo round-tripper in the seventh.
Twins 4, Red Sox 3 at Boston (day game):
The Twins snapped their 14-game Fenway Park losing streak with a 4-3 triumph over the Red Sox. The score was tied, 3-3, when Rick Sofield led off the top of the ninth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by John Castino. The next batter, Butch Wynegar, tried to check his swing, but the ball hit his bat and just eluded third baseman Butch Hobson for a two-base hit that gave the Twins their first victory at Boston since August 16, 1977. The Sox had tied the game in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Fred Lynn.
Royals 12, Yankees 3 at New York (night game):
Darrell Porter drove in five runs and scored twice to pace the Royals to a 12-3 thrashing of the Yankees. Successive singles by Willie Wilson, Frank White and Hal McRae produced the first K.C. run in the first inning and an RBI forceout off the bat of Porter produced the second. Porter singled home two runs in a four-run fifth and two more in a six-run ninth.
Dodgers 2, Cubs 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rookie Rudy Law doubled in one run and set up another with the first of his four stolen bases to spark the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. After the Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff homer by Lenny Randle, Davey Lopes led off the L. A. third with a two-bagger and came home on a double by Law. Reggie Smith then walked and, after he and Law worked a double steal, Law scored on a grounder by Steve Garvey.
