Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 6, Mariners 5 at Chicago (day game):
Francisco Barrios was credited with his first victory since last July as the White Sox hung on to shade the Mariners, 6-5. The Sox took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a triple by Harold Baines and sacrifice fly by Jim Morrison and then kayoed Seattle starter Rob Dressler in the fourth. A single by Chet Lemon, double by Lamar Johnson and intentional walk to Baines loaded the bases. Morrison was hit by a pitch to force home one run, two more came in on a single by Junior Moore and another scored on a single by Greg Pryor.

Indians 3, Red Sox 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Dan Spillner and Sid Monge combined on a four-hitter as the Indians defeated the Red Sox, 3-1. The Indians scored a run in the third inning when Miguel Dilone legged out an infield hit, took third on pitcher Bob Stanley's wild pickoff attempt and came home on a double by Duane Kuiper. Dilone doubled in the fifth and tallied on a single by Mike Hargrove. A sacrifice fly by Cliff Johnson following a triple by Ron Hassey gave the Indians their final marker in the eighth.

Tigers 6, Orioles 4 at Detroit (day game):
A three-run rally in the eighth inning lifted the Tigers to a 6-4 victory over the Orioles. After a two-run double by Al Bumbry had given the Orioles a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth, Lance Parrish opened the bottom of the frame with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Thompson. A walk to Richie Hebner and single by Dave Stegman placed runners on first and third and brought Tippy Martinez to the mound in relief of Tim Stoddard. His first serve was a wild pitch and Hebner registered the tie-breaking run. Kirk Gibson followed with a single for an insurance tally.

Royals 5, Angels 3 at Kansas City (day game):
Exploding for all their runs in the first inning, the Royals went on to a 5-3 triumph over the Angels. California starter Frank Tanana failed to retire a batter. Willie Wilson opened with a double and scored on a triple by U.L. Washington. A single by George Brett plated Washington and a double by Darrell Porter chased Brett home. A triple by John Wathan drove in Porter and sent Tanana to an early shower. Jim Barr relieved and gave up a sacrifice fly to Frank White for the final run.

Twins 10, Brewers 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Laying down a 16-hit barrage, the Twins thrashed the Brewers, 10-4. A two-run homer by Ron Jackson and three-run round-tripper by Rick Sofield paced the attack. The Twins' Ken Landreaux extended his hitting streak to 20 games.

Rangers 5, Yankees 4 at New York (day game):
Sparky Lyle sparkled in relief as the Rangers downed the Yankees, 5-4, in 10 innings. The veteran southpaw took over for starter Fergie Jenkins and allowed only two hits in the last 5 1/3 innings to gain the victory. The score was 4-4 when Al Oliver opened the 10th with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Buddy Bell, reached third on an infield out and scored the winning run on a single by Jim Norris.

Blue Jays 12, A's 1 at Toronto (day game):
Paced by Al Woods, who drove in five runs, the Blue Jays routed the A's, 12-1. Woods plated a run with a grounder in the first inning and then stroked a two-run single in the sixth and two-run homer in the eighth. Otto Velez accounted for three RBIs with a triple and single.

[DH] Braves 2, Mets 1 (day game) / Mets 2, Braves 1 at Atlanta (day game):
Splitting 2-1 decisions, the Braves won the opener of a doubleheader and the Mets captured the nightcap. In the first game, the Braves packaged a two-run homer by Dale Murphy in the second inning with the combined six-hit pitching of Rick Matula and Rick Camp to produce the victory. A pair of errors gave the Mets their second-game win. The Mets trailed, 1-0, when Frank Taveras opened the ninth inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored when second baseman Jerry Royster erred on a grounder by Lee Mazzilli, who reached first on the miscue. After an infield out, Mazzilli scored when Royster threw Joel Youngblood's routine grounder past first baseman Chris Chambliss.

Astros 3, Phillies 0 at Houston (day game):
The Astros snapped a five-game losing streak, blanking the Phillies, 3-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Nolan Ryan. The Astros scored in their first turn at bat on a single by Rafael Landestoy, sacrifice by Terry Puhl and single by Jeff Leonard. The two other runs registered in the second on a double by Luis Pujols, a walk to Ryan and singles by Landestoy and Puhl.

Dodgers 2, Pirates 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Dodgers stopped the Pirates, 2-0. The Dodgers scored in the sixth inning on a homer by Steve Garvey and added an insurance marker in the eighth on singles by Ron Cey, Gary Thomasson and Bill Russell. Bob Welch yielded just three singles in 8 2/3 innings before giving way to Steve Howe, who retired Willie Stargell for the final out.

Padres 4, Cubs 3 at San Diego (day game):
Driving in all of his team's runs, Kurt Bevacqua led the Padres to a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. The Padres trailed, 3-2, going into the bottom of the ninth, when pinch-hitter Bill Fahey drilled a one-out single off Cubs relief ace Bruce Sutter. After Paul Dade went in to run for Fahey, Dave Winfield doubled, advancing Dade to third, and Bevacqua then delivered a two-run, game-winning single. Bevacqua had entered the game in the seventh inning as a pinch-hitter and stroked a two-run single.

Giants 6, Cardinals 5 at San Francisco (day game):
Clutch relief pitching by Al Holland enabled the Giants to hang on for a 6-5 triumph over the Cardinals and complete the three-game series sweep. The rookie southpaw entered the contest in the ninth inning with two men on and got Keith Hernandez on a popup and Ted Simmons on a strikeout to end the game.
