White Sox 1, Twins 0 at Chicago (night game):
Ken Kravec, who entered the game with an 8.38 ERA, combined with Ed Farmer on a four-hitter to give the White Sox a 1-0 triumph over the Twins. Farmer came on after Kravec yielded a leadoff single in the ninth inning and got the last three outs to notch his major-league leading 11th save. The Sox scored in the third inning when Bruce Kimm led off with a single, reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Harold Baines and a throwing error by catcher Sal Butera and, after Greg Pryor popped up, scored on a double by Alan Bannister.
Orioles 4, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Gary Roenicke hit into a double play and stole home in the same inning in the course of the Orioles' 4-1 victory over the Indians. After the Birds took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Al Bumbry, they added a pair of runs in a n unusual fifth-inning sequence. Bumbry opened with a walk and moved to second on a bunt single by Rick Dempsey. Roenicke then hit a grounder to third baseman Toby Harrah, forcing Bumbry, and Harrah's throw to second forced Dempsey. A single by Eddie Murray sent Roenicke to third and the runners then executed a double steal. Murray then scored on a single by Lee May.
Yankees 1, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Ron Guidry tossed his first shutout of the season as the Yankees beat the Tigers, 1-0. The lone run of the game came in the second inning when Reggie Jackson smacked a leadoff double and, one out later, came home on a two-bagger by Graig Nettles.
Royals 6, A's 5 at Kansas City (night game):
Darrell Porter delivered an RBI single with two out in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Royals to a 6-5 victory over the A's. Rusty Torres led off the Royals' 11th with a single and reached second on a sacrifice by Willie Wilson. One out later, George Brett was walked intentionally to set the stage for Porter, who ripped the game-winning hit. The Royals had tied the score with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, two coming on a double by Dave Chalk and another on a single by Wilson.
Mariners 4, Brewers 3 at Seattle (night game):
Dan Meyer was the hero as the Mariners posted a 12-inning, 4-3 triumph over the Brewers. The score was 3-3 when Julio Cruz led off the Mariners' 12th with an infield single and raced to third on a single by Jim Anderson. Bob McClure replaced Bill Castro on the mound for the Brewers and was greeted by the game-winning single by Meyer to center field. The Mariners had tied the contest in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Meyer.
Angels 3, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
A pinch-double by Todd Cruz drove home the winning run as the Angels edged the Rangers, 3-2, in 13 innings. The game was tied, 2-2, when Rod Carew opened the California 13th with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice by Dan Ford. Dave Rajsich then replaced Jim Kern on the hill for the Rangers and Cruz, batting for Rick Miller, lined a double down the left field line to chase Carew home. A two-run homer by Bobby Grich in the seventh inning had tied the game.
Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 2 at Toronto (day game):
The league's home run and RBI leader, Otto Velez, belted a three-run homer to highlight a 7-2 triumph by the Blue Jays over the Red Sox. With the score tied, 1-1, in the third inning and one out, Bob Bailor was hit by the pitch, stole sec-nd and scored on a single by Al Woods. After a single by Velez, Roy Howell bounced into a fielder's choice to plate Woods and give the Jays a 3-1 lead. Bailor led off the fifth with a walk and Woods singled to set the stage for the three-run circuit wallop by Velez.
Dodgers 5, Cardinals 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A pair of homers by Steve Garvey and the five-hit pitching of Burt Hooton carried the Dodgers to a 5-1 decision over the Cardinals. Garvey drilled leadoff round-trippers in the fourth and sixth innings. Reggie Smith had an RBI groundout in the third frame and sacrifice fly in the seventh. Hooton walked two and struck out two in recording his first complete game of the season. The Cards' run came on a homer by George Hendrick.
Expos 11, Braves 8 at Montreal (day game):
The Expos built up a huge lead early and withstood a late comeback by the Braves to post their sixth straight victory, 11-8. In the first inning, Rodney Scott walked and Andre Dawson singled. During a double steal, catcher Bruce Benedict threw wildly into left field and both runners scored. Larry Parrish followed with a solo homer. A two-run homer by Gary Carter highlighted a five-run fifth inning and Jerry White clouted a solo pinch-homer in the eighth. The Braves scored seven runs in the ninth on six hits, two errors and a wild pitch and had two men on before reliever Woodie Fryman retired Chris Chambliss for the game's final out.
Phillies 6, Reds 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Pete Rose scored from first on a single to climax a three-run seventh inning that triggered the Phillies' 6-4 victory over the Reds and made Steve Carlton the league's first seven-game winner. The Phils trailed, 4-2, in the bottom of the seventh, but tied the game on two-out, back-to-back doubles by Manny Trillo and pinch-hitter Del Unser and an RBI single by Rose. Bake McBride then singled to right and Rose, running on a 3-2 pitch, rounded third, saw Reds right fielder Ken Griffey throw to second and kept going, beating Rick Auerbach's throw to the plate. Greg Luzinski cracked a solo homer in the eighth for an insurance run.
