Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 4, Twins 2 at Chicago (night game):
Extending their winning streak to four games, the White Sox copped a 4-2 verdict over the Twins. The game was tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning when the White Sox broke through as Chet Lemon walked, raced to third on a single by Lamar Johnson and scored on a single by Wayne Nordhagen. Lemon provided insurance with a homer in the eighth. The Twins' Ken Landreaux tripled in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 22 consecutive games.

[DH] Indians 4, Orioles 0 (night game) / Orioles 8, Indians 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Trading shutouts, the Indians won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-0, behind the four-hit pitching of John Denny, and the Or-oles captured the second game, 8-0, as Jim Palmer and Tippy Martinez combined on a five-hitter. Jorge Orta singled home Miguel Dilone with the first Cleveland run in the first inning of the lidlifter and scored the second run in the fourth on a two-out single by Joe Charboneau. The Orioles registered all the runs they needed in the second inning of the nightcap when Doug DeCinces belted a solo homer and Dan Graham delivered a sacrifice fly.

Tigers 12, Yankees 8 at Detroit (night game):
A grand slam by Richie Hebner highlighted a six-run fifth inning that propelled the Tigers to a 12-8 victory over the Yankees and sent previously unbeaten Tommy John crashing to defeat. John held a 5-2 lead and retired the first two batters in the fifth before a single and two walks loaded the sacks and brought Hebner to the plate. The veteran third baseman slammed John's first pitch into the seats. A double by Lou Whitaker and single by Champ Summers drove in two more runs in the inning.

Royals 1, A's 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Although needing relief help, Rich Gale got credit for his first victory since August 1, 1979, as the Royals blanked the A's, 1-0. The Royals scored in the fourth inning when U.L. Washington singled, took second on a groundout and, after a walk to Darrell Porter, came home on a single by Willie Aikens.

Brewers 14, Mariners 5 at Seattle (night game):
Ben Oglivie belted a pair of homers and drove in six runs to spark the Brewers to a 14-5 rout of the Mariners. The Brewers added four more runs in the second on a two-run double by Sal Bando, sacrifice fly by Oglivie and run-scoring double by Sixto Lezcano. Oglivie's second homer was a three-run shot that highlighted a six-run third.

Angels 5, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
In a game shortened by rain to seven innings, the Angels edged the Rangers, 5-4. The Angels scored twice in the second inning on an RBI double by Joe Rudi and run-scoring single by Ralph Garr. Bobby Grich clouted a two-run homer in the sixth and singles by Ralph Garr, Todd Cruz and Tom Donohue delivered another run later in the same frame. Richie Zisk clouted a three-run homer for the Rangers in the seventh off reliever Dave LaRoche, who then retired the side as rain came to halt play.

A three-run homer by Steve Garvey -- his fourth round-tripper in three games -- powered the Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. The score was 1-1 in the sixth inning when Davey Lopes and Reggie Smith walked and Garvey followed with his big blast. The Dodgers' other run came on a homer by Smith in the fourth.

Braves 1, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
Phil Niekro ended the Expos' six-game winning streak by pitching the Braves to a 1-0 triumph. The lone run came in the seventh inning when Dale Murphy stroked a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bruce Benedict and scored on a double by Chico Ruiz.

Astros 3, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
A leadoff homer by Terry Puhl in the seventh inning snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the Astros to a 3-2 decision over the Mets. Puhl's clout came after the Mets had deadlocked the contest in the sixth with two runs on a squeeze bunt by Frank Taveras and a double by John Stearns.

Reds 7, Phillies 6 at Philadelphia (night game):
Overcoming four home runs, the Reds edged the Phillies, 7-6. The Reds trailed, 5-4, when Johnny Bench reached second in the sixth on a two-out throwing error by Mike Schmidt.
