Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Steady seven-hit pitching by Geoff Zahn carried the Twins to a 3-2 triumph over the White Sox. The Twins scored their deciding run in the sixth inning when Pete Mackanin led off with an infield hit, raced to third on a single by Jose Morales and tallied on an infield out by Ron Jackson. Ken Landreaux extended his hitting streak to 23 games with a first-inning single.

Indians 4, Orioles 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Joe Charboneau drove in two runs with a single and homer to spark the Indians to a 4-2 victory over the Orioles. The Indians grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Charboneau. Miguel Dilone singled home the third Cleveland run in the fourth and Charboneau drilled a 3-0 pitch over the left field fence in the fifth.

Yankees 9, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
In a battle of home runs, the Yankees outslugged the Tigers to gain an 11-inning, 9-5 victory. Graig Nettles cracked a solo homer to break a 5-5 tie in the top of the 11th and Ruppert Jones belted a three-run shot later in that same frame. The Tigers' Steve Kemp had tied the game in the seventh with a three-run round-tripper. Duffy Dyer hit a two-run homer for the Tigers in the sixth and Lou Piniella hit a three-run homer for the Yankees in the fourth.

A's 4, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Tony Armas and Wayne Gross delivered run-scoring singles in the 14th inning to lift the A's to a 4-2 victory over the Royals. The game was tied, 2-2, when Rickey Henderson drew a one-out walk and stole second. After Dwayne Murphy received an intentional walk, Armas and Gross followed with RBI singles. The Royals had tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run pinch-double by Dave Chalk.

Mariners 6, Brewers 5 at Seattle (night game):
A five-run explosion in the eighth inning lifted the Mariners to a 6-5 triumph over the Brewers. Trailing, 4-1, the Mariners began the winning surge with singles by Larry Milbourne and Tom Paciorek. A double by Willie Horton plated two runs and Bruce Bochte followed with a two-run homer. Bill Stein then capped the outburst with a solo round-tripper. Ben Oglivie hit two homers for the Brewers, giving him four in two games and 10 for the season.

Angels 9, Rangers 8 at Texas (night game):
A three-run pinch-homer by Al Cowens climaxed a rally in the seventh inning that carried the Angels to a 9-8 victory over the Rangers. The Angels trailed, 7-5, going into the seventh, and drew to within one run on a solo homer by Dan Ford off Dave Rajsich. Jim Kern relieved and the inning was kept alive when shortstop Dave Roberts erred on a grounder by Joe Rudi. Bobby Grich then drew a walk and Kern was excused in favor of Sparky Lyle. The veteran lefty was greeted by Cowens' game-winning blast.

Red Sox 11, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (night game):
Led by Jim Dwyer and Tony Perez, who hit two homers each, the Red Sox fired a round-tripper barrage to bury the Blue Jays, 11-2. The Red Sox jumped off to a lead in the first inning on a three-run circuit clout by Perez. Jim Rice blasted a two-run homer in the third and Dwyer led off the fifth with his third homer in three games. Dwyer added his second homer, a three-run blast in the ninth, and two batters later, Perez lined a solo shot to left-center.

Dodgers 5, Cardinals 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run homer by Dusty Baker capped a rally in the eighth inning that lifted the Dodgers to a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals, handing the Redbirds their seventh straight defeat and sending them tumbling into the cellar in the N.L. East. The Dodgers were behind, 3-1, when Davey Lopes drew a one-out walk and Cardinals starter Bob Forsch was relieved by Jim Kaat. After Derrel Thomas struck out Reggie Smith singled, sending Lopes to third and resulting in Kaat's being derricked in favor of Mark Littell, who entered the game with a 6.10 ERA and promptly yielded a single to Steve Garvey and Baker's game-winning blast.

Expos 3, Braves 2 at Montreal (day game):
A double by Rowland Office in the ninth inning drove in the winning run as the Expos shaded the Braves, 3-2. After the Braves tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the ninth, Ron LeFlore and Rodney Scott drew one-out walks in the Expos' half before Office delivered the game-winning blow against his old team.

Mets 5, Astros 1 at New York (night game):
Pete Falcone and Neil Allen combined on a four-hitter as the Mets registered a 5-1 triumph over the Astros. The Mets scored twice in the second inning as John Stearns led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third when third baseman Enos Cabell booted a grounder by Doug Flynn and tallied on a single by Falcone. A single by Lee Mazzilli then plated Flynn. The Mets picked up another run in the fifth and added two more in the seventh with the aid of an error by Houston second baseman Rafael Landestoy.

Scoring twice in the ninth inning, the Phillies posted a 9-8 triumph over the Reds. The Phils trailed, 8-7, when Mike Schmidt led off the rally with a double and scored on a single by Greg Luzinski. Lonnie Smith ran for Luzinski and pinch-hitter Del Unser then walked. Two outs later, Manny Trillo lined a 1-1 pitch to right. Dave Collins broke in on the ball, but it bounced off the heel of his glove for an error as the winning run came across. Reds starter Tom Seaver gave up back-to-back homers to Luzinski and Keith Moreland in the second. Luzinski's was his fourth homer in his last six at-bats and Moreland's was his first in the major leagues.

Omar Moreno then singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Tim Foli and, after Dave Parker was walked intentionally, scored the winning run on a single by Bill Robinson. Padres starter Randy Jones, who was trying for his fourth straight shutout, had several strings ended: scoreless innings (30), innings without any walks (44) and innings without extra-base hits (37). The second game was tied, 2-2, going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Bill Madlock drilled a leadoff double, sending Padres starter John Curtis to the showers in favor of Bob Shirley.
