Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Tigers 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Retiring the last 17 batters, Scott McGregor pitched a two-hitter as the Orioles defeated the Tigers, 5-1. The Birds scored twice in the second inning, the first run coming home on a grounder by Rich Dauer and the second on a single by Al Bumbry. The Orioles picked up their other three runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Doug DeCinces, Gary Roenicke and Bumbry. Steve Kemp belted a homer for the Tigers' run in the first inning.

Royals 16, A's 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Reaching their season high for hits and runs, the Royals buried the A's, 16-3, with a 21-hit bombardment. A three-run homer by John Wathan highlighted an eight-run fourth inning. Renie Martin went the route in raising his record to 5-1. The converted reliever allowed solo homers to Tony Armas and Wayne Gross but remained unbeaten in four major league starts, all in May. His defeat came in April as a reliever.

Rangers 12, Angels 6 at Texas (night game):
Buddy Bell hit two homers and pitchers Jon Matlack and Danny Darwin combined on a club record 15 strikeouts as the Rangers defeated the Angels, 12-6. The Rangers were behind, 6-4, when they sent 11 men to the plate in the fourth inning and scored six runs. Jim Sundberg started the outburst with a double and tallied on a single by Mickey Rivers. Bump Wills then delivered a two-run homer. Al Oliver followed with a single and, after starter Don Aase was relieved by Jim Barr, Bell drilled a two-run round-tripper to climax the rally. Bell's second homer was a bases-empty shot in the seventh.

Yankees 5, Blue Jays 1 at Toronto (night game):
A four-run outburst in the eighth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and carried the Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Blue Jays. The winning rally was keyed by a two-run bases-loaded double by Bobby Brown that broke the tie. The Yanks had deadlocked the game in the seventh on a homer by Joe Lefebvre in his first major league game.

Astros 8, Mets 5 at New York (night game):
Pounding out 17 hits, the Astros fashioned an 8-5 victory over the Mets. Joe Niekro pitched 6 2/3 innings to be credited with his fifth win while Frank LaCorte finished to earn his fourth save. The Astros' attack was highlighted by homers by Craig Reynolds and Cesar Cedeno. Reynolds hit a solo shot in the first. Cedeno's blast was a two-run affair in the fifth.

Padres 6, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A three-run rally in the ninth inning lifted the Padres to a 6-4 triumph over the Pirates. The Padres trailed, 4-3, when the winning rally began with a one-out solo homer by Dave Winfield. Ozzie Smith then singled, stole second and scored on a single by Jerry Mumphrey. Grant Jackson replaced Kent Tekulve on the hill for the Bucs and got Gene Richards on an infield out, but Jerry Turner delivered a single that plated Mumphrey.
