Today's scores and summaries:
Indians 10, Orioles 6 at Baltimore (night game):
An eight-run explosion in the fifth inning powered the Indians to a 10-6 triumph over the Orioles. A leadoff homer by Joe Charboneau off Orioles starter Jim Palmer began the outburst. After a single, walk and sacrifice, Jorge Orta delivered two tallies with a single. Orta then stole second and registered on a single by Mike Hargrove. Sammy Stewart relieved Palmer and was greeted by a single by Ron Hassey. Toby Harrah walked to load the bases and Charboneau also walked to force home another run. A single by Cliff Johnson plated Hassey, and Jerry Dybzinski capped the rally with a two-run single.
Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
A four-run outburst in the second inning carried the Blue Jays to a 4-1 triumph over the Red Sox as Dave Stieb and Joey McLaughlin combined on a four-hitter. The Jays began the uprising when Roy Howell led off with a single and Barry Bonnell walked. The runners advanced on an infield out and, after an intentional walk to Al Woods, a single by Garth Iorg plated Howell. Alfredo Griffin then delivered a single that scored Bonnell and Woods. The final run followed when Griffin and Iorg executed a double steal, Iorg scoring.
Angels 7, Rangers 6 at California (night game):
Jason Thompson, in his first time at bat for California, drilled a three-run pinch-double in the eighth inning to spark the Angels to a 7-6 victory over the Rangers. Thompson scored the fourth run of the frame after Dickie Thon singled but was out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Thompson stopped at third but came home when Texas shortstop Pepe Frias, thinking there were three outs after tagging Thon, dropped the ball on the mound and was charged with an error. The winning rally began when Joe Rudi walked. After a sacrifice, intentional pass and single by Larry Harlow, Thompson hit his two-bagger.
Brewers 7, Mariners 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Bill Travers and Reggie Cleveland combined on a three-hit shutout as the Brewers won their sixth straight game, beating the Mariners, 7-0. The Brewers scored twice in their first turn at bat on RBI singles by Cecil Cooper and Ben Oglivie. A two-run double by Robin Yount and two-run single by Cooper highlighted a five-run fourth.
Twins 6, White Sox 4 at Minnesota (night game):
A two-run pinch-single by Danny Goodwin keyed a three-run seventh inning that lifted the Twins to a 6-4 decision over the White Sox, ending their five-game losing streak. With the bases loaded and one out, Goodwin lined a 3-2 pitch to center, scoring Sal Butera and Roy Smalley to give the Twins a 5-4 lead. Mike Cubbage then came home on John Castino's fielder's choice. The Twins' Ken Landreaux extended his hitting streak to 29 games with an infield single in the first inning.
Tigers 6, Yankees 3 at New York (night game):
Mauling Ron Guidry, the Tigers downed the Yankees, 6-3. It was only the star southpaw's second loss in 19 decisions since last year's All-Star Game. The Tigers began the scoring in the second inning when Dave Stegman belted a two-run homer following a single by Tom Brookens. They added four more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Richie Hebner, sacrifice fly by Brookens and two-run single by Tim Corcoran.
A's 6, Royals 3 at Oakland (day game):
Dwayne Murphy and Wayne Gross stole home during a four-run first inning that started the A's off to a 6-3 victory over the Royals. Murphy and Gross each tallied on the front end of a double steal as the A's overcame a two-run deficit with three singles, four stolen bases, two walks, a wild pitch and a passed ball. Rick Langford scattered nine hits in pitching his fourth victory.
Braves 3, Giants 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Braves edged the Giants, 3-2, with an unearned run in the 12th inning. With one out, Larvell Blanks reached second on a two-base throwing error by third baseman Darrell Evans and scored on a single by Chris Chambliss.
Cubs 8, Expos 4 at Chicago (day game):
A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jerry White in the ninth inning enabled the Expos to tie the Cubs at 3-3 in a game that was suspended after 10 innings because of darkness. White's RBI countered a run-scoring single by Lenny Randle that had given the Cubs a 3-2 lead in the eighth.
Astros 1, Padres 0 at Houston (night game):
Nolan Ryan allowed only two hits and pitched the Astros to a 1-0 triumph over the Padres, completing the three-game series sweep. The Only hits given by the fireballing righthander were a double by Rick Wise in the third inning and an infield hit by Ozzie Smith in the eighth. In the Astros' second inning, Jose Cruz stroked a leadoff single, stole second and, one out later, scored when Enos Cabell dumped a single into right field.
Phillies 6, Pirates 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Randy Lerch received credit for his first victory of the season after six losses as the Phillies downed the Pirates, 6-3. The Phils scored three times in the first inning on a double by Pete Rose, single by Bake McBride and two-run homer by Mike Schmidt. Rose smacked a run-scoring double in the fourth and came home on a double by McBride.
Mets 6, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (day game):
Rallying for six runs in the eighth inning, the Mets overcame a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Cardinals, 6-5. Cardinals starter John Fulgham held the Mets to two hits in seven innings before reliever Jim Otten took over in the eighth. Otten issued three walks to fill the bases and was replaced by Mark Littell, who gave up a two-run single to John Stearns and walked Steve Henderson. After George Frazier relieved, Eliiott Maddox doubled to clear the bases and tie the score. Jose Moreno followed with a single for his first major league hit to produce the decisive tally.
