Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 5, Brewers 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Combining on a four-hitter, John Denny and Victor Cruz pitched the Indians to a 5-0 triumph, snapping the Brewers' six-game winning skein. Cliff Johnson smacked a solo homer in the fourth inning and Jorge Orta blasted a two-run round-tripper in the seventh.

Twins 5, White Sox 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Ken Landreaux had two singles to extend his hitting streak to 30 games as the Twins prevailed over the White Sox, 5-2. A three-run outburst in the sixth inning proved decisive. Trailing, 2-1, the Twins rallied with four hits and two walks as Glenn Adams, Hosken Powell and John Castino each drove in one run. Rick Sofield connected for a homer in the seventh.

Dodgers 3, Braves 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bob Welch fired a one-hitter, barely missing a perfect game, as the Dodgers blanked the Braves, 3-0. The only baserunner for Atlanta was Larvell Blanks, who lined a clean single to center in the fourth inning and was erased on a double play. Welch retired the final 15 batters in succession in facing the minimum number of batters for the game. Reggie Smith and Joe Ferguson hit homers for the Dodgers.

Pirates 5, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
A double by Ed Ott keyed a two-run fifth inning that carried the Pirates to a 5-4 triumph over the Phillies. Bill Madlock singled and scored on Ott's two-bagger to break a 3-3 tie. A single by Dale Berra then tallied Ott.

Reds 5, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Johnny Bench hit three home runs in one game for the third time in his career to power the Reds to a 5-3 triumph over the Padres. Bench's first round-tripper came in the second inning. He added his second smash in the fourth and hit his third in the eighth after Ken Griffey had singled. Bench has hit two or more homers in one game 17 times in his career. His last three-homer game was on May 9, 1973.
