Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 8, Red Sox 5 at Boston (day game):
Trailing, 5-0, the Brewers exploded for eight runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Red Sox, 8-5. Dick Davis ignited the outburst with a double and was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, on his second trip after the Brewers had tied the score. Ben Oglivie then cleared the sacks with a double, giving the Brewers their winning margin.

Mariners 8, Indians 7 at Cleveland (day game):
Batting .167 at the start of the game, Larry Cox drove in a run with a single in the fourth inning and then smashed his first homer of the season in the ninth to give the Mariners an 8-7 victory over the Indians. The Indians hit four sacrifice flies, tying the major league record, and the Mariners hit one, with the two-club total of five equalling another record.

White Sox 6, Royals 1 at Kansas City (day game):
Britt Burns scattered five hits in seven innings and Ed Farmer followed with two scoreless stanzas as the White Sox defeated the Royals, 6-1. Mike Squires, Lamar Johnson and Bob Molinaro each had two of Chicago's 12 hits and among them drove in three runs and scored four.

Yankees 11, Blue Jays 7 at New York (day game):
Eric Soderholm went 5-for-5, including a two-run triple, and Bobby Brown and Graig Nettles smashed homers as the Yankees overpowered the Blue Jays, 11-7. After the Yankees tied the score at 3-3 in the fifth inning, Tom Buskey replaced Paul Mirabella. Brown smashed Buskey's first pitch for a three-run round-tripper. Nettles delivered a two-run smash as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. John Mayberry hit two homers for the Blue Jays.

Rangers 7, A's 3 at Texas (night game):
Pat Putnam, who had a 3-for-3 night, drove in four runs with a pair of homers to help the Rangers snap their four-game losing streak with a 7-3 victory over the A's. Al Oliver batted in two runs with a homer and single as the Rangers continued their career domination of Matt Keough, beating the A's starting pitcher for the seventh straight time.

Cubs 5, Phillies 4 at Chicago (day game):
Hitting to the opposite field, Dave Kingman singled to right in the seventh inning, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Scot Thompson, giving the Cubs a 5-4 victory over the Phillies. Kingman homered in the fifth and Larry Biittner, pinch-hitting, hit another for the Cubs with a man on base in the sixth. Mike Schmidt tied the score for the Phillies with his major league-leading 17th homer in the top of the seventh.

Braves 9, Dodgers 5 at Los Angeles (day game):
Bob Horner, who entered the game batting .120 with one homer, smashed a pair of round-trippers to lead the Braves to a 9-5 victory over the Dodgers. Horner also hit a sacrifice fly and drove in a total of four runs. Dale Murphy had three hits and two RBIs. The Dodgers' scoring came on a two-run homer by Steve Garvey and three-run blast by Dusty Baker.

Pirates 13, Mets 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Dale Berra hit the first grand slam of his major league career to help Jim Bibby boost his record to 6-1 as the Pirates pounded the Mets, 13-3. The Pirates turned the game into a rout with seven runs in the fifth inning. After run-scoring singles by Bill Robinson and Bill Madlock kayoed Pete Falcone, John Pacella came in and loaded the bases by hitting Lee Lacy with a pitch and walking Steve Nicosia. Mark Bomback then replaced Pacella and was the victim of Berra's blast. The homer was his first of the season.

Reds 7, Padres 6 at San Diego (day game):
Pinch-hitting, Johnny Bench smashed a three-run homer with two out in the eighth inning to lift the Reds to a 7-6 victory over the Padres. Ray Knight doubled and Dan Driessen walked before Bench boosted his career RBI total to 1,210, moving into second place on the major league's all-time RBI list for catchers ahead of Bill Dickey. Yogi Berra leads with 1,430.

Giants 6, Astros 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Bob Knepper not only pitched a six-hitter in a 6-2 victory over the Astros, but the Giants' lefthander clinched his own decision with a two-run double in the eighth inning. Knepper did not issue a pass while going the distance for the third time this season. Jack Clark also had two RBIs for the Giants with a sacrifice fly and double.

Expos 7, Cardinals 6 at St. Louis (day game):
Andre Dawson doubled in the 12th inning and scored on a two-out single by Warren Cromartie to bring the Expos a 7-6 victory over the Cardinals, who suffered their 17th loss in their last 20 games. Dawson's double was his third of the game and fourth hit in five times at bat, but Cromartie had been collared in five trips before coming through with the game-winning single.
