Orioles 9, Brewers 8 at Baltimore (night game):
Leading off in the 11th inning, Lenn Sakata hit his first homer in an Orioles' uniform to defeat the Brewers, 9-8. The pinch-hitter's blow made a winner out of Tippy Martinez, who pitched to just one batter, striking out Ben Oglivie with the bases loaded in the top half of the 11th. The Brewers had four homers in the game, one each by Oglivie and Gorman Thomas and two by Cecil Cooper, who connected each time with a man on base.
Rangers 1, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
The Rangers and White Sox played to a 1-1 tie in a game called off because of rain and wet grounds with one out in the last half of the sixth inning. The Rangers scored in the first on a double by Mickey Rivers, sacrifice by Bump Wills and infield out by Al Oliver. The White Sox knotted the count in the fifth when Lamar Johnson doubled and Jim Morrison singled.
Indians 10, A's 5 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians put together 11 hits and 11 walks in gaining a 10-5 victory over the A's. Wayne Garland, making his first start of the season, pitched six innings and received credit for his first victory since August 26, 1979. The Indians split their RBIs among five different players, with Dave Rosello hitting a homer to account for two. Mitchell Page and Dwayne Murphy rapped round-trippers for the A's.
Mariners 3, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
After the clubs had played 13 innings, rain forced the umpires to halt the game between the Mariners and Tigers with the score tied, 3-3. Dan Meyer had five hits in six trips for the Mariners and scored two of their runs. Tom Paciorek batted in two with a pair of singles. Kirk Gibson homered for the Tigers and Richie Hebner accounted for their two other runs with a sacrifice fly and single.
Yankees 5, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Eric Soderholm hit a two-run homer and Rick Cerone batted in two more runs with a double as the Yankees did all their scoring in the first inning to defeat the Royals, 5-3. The Yankees' first run came on a walk to Willie Randolph, single by Dennis Werth and forceout by Bob Watson. Soderholm followed with his homer. Lou Piniella then singled, Bobby Brown doubled and Cerone knocked in the deciding runs with his two-bagger.
Red Sox 6, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A homer by Jim Dwyer in the fourth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and started the Red Sox on their way to a a 6-2 victory over the Twins. Dwyer also drove in another run with an infield out. The Red Sox piled up 15 hits in support of Bob Stanley, who pitched the route on a six-hitter.
Angels 6, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
Jason Thompson drove in a run on a single in the first inning when the Angels scored three runs and then homered with a man on base in the fifth to clinch a 6-3 victory over the Blue Jays. Luis Leal, who started for the Blue Jays, was rapped for five straight hits to open the game. Rick Miller and Carney Lansford doubled. Rod Carew and Thompson singled and Joe Rudi doubled. Leal then retired Bobby Grich before being removed. The Angels' five consecutive safeties to start the game tied the A.L. record set by the Royals on May 18, 1980, against California.
Dodgers 3, Reds 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Pinch-hitter Rick Monday, batting only .182, came through with a homer with one out in the ninth inning to bring the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over the Reds. Davey Lopes also homered, connecting with a man on base in the seventh, to put the Dodgers ahead, 2-1, but the Reds tied the score in the eighth on a pass to Dave Concepcion, an infield out and single by George Foster.
Expos 8, Cubs 7 at Montreal (night game):
Making his first major league appearance, Bob Pate drew a walk with the bases loaded in the 13th inning, forcing in Rodney Scott with the run that gave the Expos an 8-7 victory over the Cubs. Scot Thompson, Ken Henderson and Mike Vail hit homers for the Cubs, while the Expos had round-trippers by Warren Cromartie and Jerry White. In the 13th, Scott walked, Andre Dawson was hit by a pitch and, after a sacrifice, the Cubs passed Cromartie intentionally to load the bases. Pate then batted for Woodie Fryman and drew his game-winning walk when Lynn McGlothen missed the plate on a 3-2 pitch.
Pirates 9, Phillies 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Don Robinson pitched the distance for the first time this season and helped himself a with two-run single as the Pirates defeated the Phillies, 9-3. Vance Law and Dave Parker also batted in two runs apiece. Omar Moreno stole four bases. The Pirates broke the game open when they scored five unearned runs in the fifth inning on two errors by Mike Schmidt and one by Bake McBride.
Padres 3, Astros 0 at San Diego (day game):
The Padres jumped on Nolan Ryan for three runs in the first inning and defeated the Astros, 3-0, behind the combined four-hit pitching of Rick Wise and Eric Rasmussen. In the first, Gene Richards and Ozzie Smith singled and Dave Winfield walked with one out to load the bases. Willie Montanez came through with a single, driving in Richards and Smith, and Dave Cash followed with a sacrifice fly to score Winfield.
Braves 4, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Although tagged for 11 hits, Phil Niekro was able to pitch the Braves to a 4-2 victory over the Giants. The Braves scored twice in the fifth inning. Brian Asselstine tripled and came home on a single by Luis Gomez. Niekro helped himself with a single, sending Gomez to third, and Glenn Hubbard followed with a sacrifice fly. Dale Murphy and Chris Chambliss then hit run-scoring singles in the seventh to provide the Braves' winning margin.
