Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 3, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Limiting the Orioles to five singles, Moose Haas recorded his second shutout in his last three starts as the Brewers downed the Baltimore, 3-0. A single by Ben Oglivie, double by Sixto Lezcano and two-run single by Jim Gantner staked Haas to an early lead. Cecil Cooper homered in the ninth after Sammy Stewart, who yielded only five hits himself, had retired 16 of the last 17 Milwaukee batters.

White Sox 5, Rangers 4 at Chicago (night game):
Shoddy defense led to the Rangers' downfall in a 5-4 loss to the White Sox. Errors in three different innings resulted in an unearned run each time, although Chicago's winning run came legitimately. With the score tied 4-4 in the eighth, Kevin Bell walked, advanced to third on a double by Harold Baines and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by pinch-hitter Claudell Washington. Texas came from behind to knot the score three times, pulling into their last tie in the eighth on Pat Putnam's pinch-homer off Ed Farmer, the eventual winning pitcher.

Indians 6, A's 4 at Cleveland (night game):
A two-run homer by Cliff Johnson in the tenth inning lifted the Indians to a 6-4 victory over the A's. Mike Hargrove, who had only three hits in his last 21 at-bats, singled off loser Rick Langford with two out to give Johnson his chance. Held to five hits by Len Barker through the first eight innings, the A's forced the extra frame by tagging his successors for three straight homers to open the ninth. Dave Revering and Mitchell Page connected off Sid Monge, and Tony Armas tied the game with a blast off Victor Cruz.

Tigers 4, Mariners 2 at Detroit (night game):
After being held hitless through the first six innings by Dave Roberts, the Tigers rallied for two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to defeat the Mariners, 4-2. Detroit tied the game in the eighth on a walk to John Wockenfuss and successive two-out singles by Kirk Gibson, Tom Brookens and pinch-hitter Stan Papi. With two outs in the ninth, Al Cowens singled off reliever Byron McLaughlin and then Richie Hebner, pinch-hitting for Wockenfuss, homered to right field.

Royals 6, Yankees 5 at Kansas City (night game):
Pinch-hitting, Clint Hurdle lashed a two-out single over the head of New York right fielder Dennis Werth to score Pete LaCock and give the Royals a 6-5 victory over the Yankees in 10 innings. LaCock opened the inning with a single, advanced to second on a bunt by U.L. Washington and to third on a groundout by Willie Wilson. George Brett had three hits, including a two-run homer, and scored three times. Dan Quisenberry chalked up his fourth victory with 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Larry Gura.

Twins 9, Red Sox 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Powered by Rick Sofield's four RBIs, the Twins ripped the Red Sox, 9-4. Sofield snapped a 2-2 tie with a double in the fifth and capped the decisive sixth inning with a three-run homer. Butch Wynegar also homered for the Twins, and Dwight Evans knocked in all Boston runs with a double in the second and homer in the seventh.

Blue Jays 7, Angels 6 at Toronto (night game):
With two out in the 11th inning, John Mayberry capped the Blue Jays' comeback with a drive off the right field fence that sent Alfredo Griffin strolling home with the winning run in a 7-6 triumph over the Angels. Trailing, 6-0, the Jays scored once in the third and added three more runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Rick Bosetti and sacrifice fly by Damaso Garcia. The game was sent into extra innings when Roy Howell singled home a run in the ninth and then counted himself on a double by Otto Velez. Griffin led off the 11th with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice and to third on a fly by Howell. Dave LaRoche then purposely passed Velez to get to lefthander Mayberry, but the strategy backfired.

Dodgers 5, Reds 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
On the heels of a one-hit performance against the Braves, Bob Welch gained his sixth straight victory as the Dodgers downed the Reds, 5-1. Ron Cey smashed a two-run homer in the second inning to give Welch all the runs he needed.

Cubs 5, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Jerry Martin cracked a three-run homer in the second inning to back the six-hit pitching of Rick Reuschel as the Cubs defeated the Expos, 5-2. Martin's homer followed a single by Dave Kingman and walk to Mike Vail. It was the first time since May 26, 1973 that Ross Grimsley, then with Cincinnati, had lost to the Cubs.

Cardinals 8, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Keith Hernandez drove in five runs with two homers and Ted Simmons smashed a three-run homer in the first inning to support the five-hit pitching of John Fulgham, leading the Cardinals to an 8-1 rout of the Mets. Hernandez belted a three-run shot in the second and two-run round-tripper in the fifth. Elliott Maddox hit his first homer of the year in the fifth for the Mets, ending a string of 23 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings by Fulgham.

Pirates 4, Phillies 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A two-out single in the ninth inning by Ed Ott scored Vance Law and lifted the Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Phillies. Law singled to lead off the ninth and advanced to second on a groundout by Dave Parker. Tug McGraw intentionally walked Willie Stargell and Bill Madlock around a groundout by John Milner to load the bases before Ott provided the winning blow. Stargell had tied the score, 3-3, with a leadoff homer in the eighth.

Astros 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Trailing 1-0 entering the eighth inning, the Astros rallied for three runs, two on a triple by Rafael Landestoy, for a 3-2 victory over the Padres. Craig Reynolds followed Landestoy's one-out triple with a run-scoring single. The Padres made it close in the ninth on a pinch-double by Kurt Bevacqua and pinch-single by Tim Flannery.

Giants 3, Braves 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the ninth inning when pinch-hitter Milt May stroked a two-run double with two out for a 3-2 victory over the Braves. Larry McWilliams had four-hit shutout going into the ninth and was one out away from victory when he was replaced by Larry Bradford. With runners at first and second, Mike Sadek singled home the first run of the inning. May, batting for winning pitcher Greg Minton, then doubled to left-center.
