Today's scores and summaries:
Royals 8, Rangers 0 at Texas (night game):
Dennis Leonard blanked the Rangers on three hits and the Royals made Jim Kern's first start since May 31, 1976, an unpleasant one with an 8-0 drubbing. Frank White started the K.C. barrage with a homer in the third following a triple by U.L. Washington and walk to Willie Wilson. Amos Otis added his first homer of the season in the fourth.
Expos 2, Cubs 0 at Montreal (night game):
Slamming his first home run of the season, Rowland Office gave Scott Sanderson all the runs he needed as the Expos' righthander tossed a six-hitter and blanked the Cubs, 2-0. Office broke up the scoreless duel between Sanderson and Dennis Lamp with Warren Cromartie aboard via a single in the seventh inning.
Mets 2, Cardinals 1 at New York (night game):
Pinch-hitter Mike Jorgensen lofted a single over the drawn-in outfield with the bases loaded and none out in the ninth inning to nudge the Mets past the Cardinals, 2-1. Craig Swan went the distance for the Mets and was the beneficiary of the last-inning rally which started with a single by Steve Henderson. Joel Youngblood drew a walk and Alex Trevino was safe on a perfectly placed bunt, loading the bases and setting the stage for Jorgensen's single to right.
