Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 9, Angels 7 at California (night game):
Pinch-hitter Bobby Murcer singled home two runs in the 11th inning to lift the Yankees to a 9-7 victory over the Angels. With the score tied, 7-7, Willie Randolph drew a walk and stole second. After Joe Lefebvre received an intentional walk, the bases became loaded when Angels third baseman Dickie Thon erred on a grounder by Bob Watson. Murcer then singled to right. The Angels had tied the contest in the ninth on a two-run single by Freddie Patek and sacrifice fly by Rod Carew.

White Sox 7, Blue Jays 4 at Chicago (night game):
A three-run triple by Lamar Johnson keyed a four-run fifth inning that carried the White Sox to a 7-4 verdict over the Blue Jays. The Sox took a 3-2 lead in the fourth frame on a sacrifice fly by Junior Moore and knocked out Jays starter Paul Mirabella with three straight singles in the fifth. Reliever Tom Buskey then came on with the bases loaded and was greeted by Johnson's three-bagger. A double by Jim Morrison plated Johnson.

[DH] Royals 5, Indians 0 (night game) / Indians 8, Royals 5 at Cleveland (night game):
The Royals and Indians split a doubleheader, K.C. taking the opener, 5-0, as Dennis Leonard recorded his second straight shutout, and the Tribe capturing the nightcap, 8-5, as Jorge Orta led the way with four RBIs. In the lidlifter, run-scoring singles by Amos Otis, Willie Aikens and John Wathan staked Leonard to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A sacrifice fly by Wathan produced another tally in the third and Frank White drilled a solo homer in the fourth. After spotting the Royals a 3-0 lead in the second game, the Indians tied the count on a three-run homer by Joe Charboneau in the second inning. Orta blasted a two-run round-tripper in the seventh to put the Indians ahead to stay and end the Royals' winning streak at eight games.

Twins 9, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
A six-run explosion in the fifth inning lifted the Twins to a 9-5 victory over the Tigers. Tallies in the big inning came on an RBI squeeze bunt by Rick Sofield, two-run homer by Mike Cubbage, RBI single by Butch Wynegar and two-run single by Rob Wilfong. John Castino belted a homer for the Twins in the eighth inning. Jerry Koosman got the final out of the game in his second relief appearance of the year.

Brewers 7, Rangers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Two homers by Sixto Lezcano supplied the power and Lary Sorensen pitched a five-hitter as the Brewers thumped the Rangers, 7-1. Lezcano gave the Brewers a 2-1 lead in the second inning with a circuit clout following a single by Ben Oglivie and added a solo shot in the sixth.

A's 6, Orioles 2 at Oakland (day game):
A grand slam by Tony Armas in the bottom of the 14th inning lifted the A's to a 6-2 triumph over the Orioles. The score was 2-2 when Dave Revering opened the A's 14th with a triple and was replaced by pinch-runner Mike Edwards. Intentional walks to Mickey Klutts and Mitchell Page loaded the bases to set the stage for Armas' 10th round-tripper of the campaign. Mike Norris went the distance for the seventh time this season. The Orioles had manufactured a tie in the seventh on a solo homer by Eddie Murray and RBI single by Kiko Garcia.

Red Sox 7, Mariners 5 at Seattle (night game):
A three-run homer by Fred Lynn keyed a seven-run outburst in the second inning that triggered the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Mariners. The Sox sent 12 men to the plate in their big inning, driving Mariners starter Jim Beattie from the mound. Lynn's blast came off reliever Byron McLaughlin. Jim Dwyer singled home two runs, Rick Burleson singled home one and Carl Yastrzemski walked with the bases loaded to account for the other tallies.

Cardinals 4, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Atlanta left fielder Brian Asselstine's 10th-inning error paved the way for the tie-breaking run, giving the Cardinals a 4-3 decision over the Braves. With two out, none on and the score tied, 3-3, Keith Hernandez lofted a fly ball that fell out of Asselstine's glove as Hernandez reached second. After Ted Simmons was issued an intentional walk, George Hendrick stroked a single to plate Hernandez. The Redbirds had tied the game in the eighth on a two-run homer by Garry Templeton.

Reds 3, Pirates 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Recording his fifth complete game of the season, Frank Pastore scattered seven hits in pitching the Reds to a 3-2 victory over the Pirates. Astros 3, Cubs 0 at Houston (night game):
J.R. Richard pitched his third consecutive shutout as the Astros beat the Cubs, 3-0. The fireballing righthander extended his scoreless streak to a club-record 31 1/3 innings. The Astros scored twice in the first inning when Terry Puhl singled, stole second and came home on a double by Jose Cruz, who then tallied on a single by Denny Walling. Puhl stroked an RBI single in the second for the Astros' final run.
