Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 13, Angels 2 at California (night game):
The Red Sox smote the Angels hip and thigh in a 13-2 rout. The Sox scored four runs in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Jim Rice and three-run round-tripper by Butch Hobson. They added three more in the fifth on an RBI double by Carlton Fisk and two-run double by Carl Yastrzemski, and made it 13-1 in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Fisk, three-run pinch-homer by Dave Stapleton and bases-empty circuit clout by Hobson.
Tigers 8, Twins 4 at Detroit (night game):
Champ Summers belted a pair of two-run homers and Alan Trammell knocked in three runs with two doubles to power the Tigers to an 8-4 decision over the Twins. Summers' first homer followed a leadoff two-bagger by Al Cowens in the fourth inning and tied the score at 4-4. After Trammell doubled home two runs in the sixth to snap the tie, Summers ripped his second round-tripper off reliever Mike Kinnunen, making his major-league debut.
Brewers 8, Rangers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Scattering seven hits, Mike Caldwell hurled the Brewers to an 8-1 victory over the Rangers. The Brewers picked up three unearned runs in the first inning. Robin Yount singled and Don Money walked. With two outs, Ben Oglivie's grounder skipped past Rangers first baseman Pat Putnam for an error, scoring Yount, and Sixto Lezcano and Sal Bando followed with RBI singles. The Brewers added four in the eighth on a two-run double by Lezcano, RBI double by Money and run-scoring single by Gorman Thomas.
Orioles 4, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
Two-run, two-out homers by Benny Ayala and Ken Singleton and six-hit pitching by Steve Stone carried the Orioles to a 4-1 victory over the Mariners. Ayala's blast came in the fourth inning and drove in Singleton, who had singled ahead of him. Singleton's round-tripper came in the eighth with Kiko Garcia on base.
Pirates 10, Reds 6 at Cincinnati (day game):
Mike Easler hit for the cycle in pacing the Pirates to a 10-6 triumph over the Reds. The left fielder drilled a two-run triple in the first inning, doubled in the third, singled in the fifth and capped the Pirates' scoring with a homer in the seventh. Jim Bibby got credit for his seventh victory while Enrique Romo gained his third save.
Expos 9, Padres 1 at Montreal (night game):
Making his major league debut, Charlie Lea pitched eight innings to get credit for the victory as the Expos roared to their ninth straight triumph, a 9-1 win over the Padres.
Mets 6, Dodgers 5 at New York (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Mets edged the Dodgers, 6-5, as the L.A. club committed three grievous errors. The Mets trailed, 5-4, in the bottom of sixth inning, when Mike Jorgensen and John Stearns drew walks. Elliott Maddox then laid a bunt down the third-base line and pitcher Bobby Castillo fielded ball and threw it wildly past third, allowing both runners to score. The Mets were behind, 5-0, in the fifth frame, but registered four runs, one coming in on an errant pickoff attempt and another on a wild throw by Dodgers shortstop Bill Russell.
