Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 7, Angels 3 at California (day game):
The Red Sox won their fifth straight game, 7-3 over the Angels. Tony Perez stroked an RBI single in the first inning, Butch Hobson connected for a run-scoring single in the second and Carl Yastrzemski belted a two-run homer in the third. Angels Manager Jim Fregosi, still upset over a decision made by umpire Jim Evans the previous night, was ejected from the game before it began and the Angels played under protest.

Indians 3, Twins 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Len Barker tossed a four-hitter and Toby Harrah banged out three hits to spark the Indians to a 3-2 decision over the Twins. The score was 1-1 in the fifth frame when Rick Manning walked, stole second, continued to third on catcher Sal Butera's wild throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jorge Orta. A walk to Ron Hassey and RBI two-bagger by Harrah gave the Tribe an insurance marker in the sixth.

Tigers 3, White Sox 0 at Detroit (day game):
Dan Petry scattered nine hits in hurling the Tigers to a 3-0 whitewashing of the White Sox. The Tigers scored twice in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Alan Trammell and a balk by Britt Burns and registered their other marker on a solo homer by John Wockenfuss in the seventh.

Brewers 5, Royals 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Robin Yount's inside-the-park homer capped a four-run second inning that propelled the Brewers to a 5-2 triumph over the Royals. Ben Oglivie cracked a homer to lead off the Brewers' second frame. Sixto Lezcano and Dick Davis followed with singles and Jim Gantner sacrificed the runners to second and third. Lezcano scored on an infield grounder by Charlie Moore and Yount then lined a shot off the right field wall and circled the bases.

Yankees 2, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
A two-out, two-run homer by Bobby Murcer in the ninth inning rallied the Yankees to a 2-1 victory over the A's. Reggie Jackson started the winning action with a one-out single and was replaced by pinch-runner Paul Blair. One out later, Murcer drilled a 1-2 pitch over the right field fence. The A's run came in the first frame on a walk to Dwayne Murphy and RBI double by Mitchell Page.

Mariners 9, Orioles 8 at Seattle (night game):
Homers by Larry Cox and Willie Horton powered a six-run fifth inning that lifted the Mariners to a 9-8 triumph over the Orioles. Horton's blast -- a two-run shot -- tied the score at 6-6 and sent Orioles starter Scott McGregor to the showers. Paul Hartzell relieved and was rapped for two singles before Cox delivered a three-run round-tripper that gave Seattle a 9-6 lead.

Blue Jays 7, Rangers 6 at Toronto (day game):
Pushing across two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Blue Jays scored a 7-6 triumph over the Rangers. With the Jays trailing, 6-5, Barry Bonnell began the Toronto ninth with a walk off Sparky Lyle, who was immediately replaced by Bob Babcock, who walked Garth Iorg. A sacrifice by Bob Davis moved the runners to second and third. After Alfredo Griffin was intentionally walked, shortstop Bud Harrelson booted Damaso Garcia's grounder, allowing the tying run to score, and Roy Howell then hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Iorg with the winning run.

Cubs 10, Braves 5 at Chicago (day game):
Unleashing an 18-hit attack, the Cubs snapped a four-game losing streak with a 10-5 victory over the Braves. The Cubs jumped on Phil Niekro for three runs in the first inning on a run-scoring double by Bill Buckner and RBI singles by Mike Vail and Barry Foote. In the second frame, Niekro was kayoed after giving up six straight hits and four runs. RBI singles by Lenny Randle and Vail and a two-run single by Larry Biittner accounted for the tallies.

Dodgers 8, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
A six-hitter by Burt Hooton enabled the Dodgers to blank the Expos, 8-0, and end their four-game losing skein. Homers by Bill Russell, Pedro Guerrero and Ron Cey led the L.A. attack. Russell's was a bases-empty smash in the third inning and Guerrero's was a three-run blast later in the same frame. Cey's circuit clout came in the sixth stanza.

Mets 7, Giants 6 at New York (night game):
A three-run homer by Steve Henderson climaxed a Garrison finish that saw the Mets score five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge the Giants, 7-6. Henderson's first round-tripper of the season came off Allen Ripley, the third Frisco pitcher, who had relieved Greg Minton, who gave up run-scoring singles to Lee Mazzilli and Claudell Washington.

Phillies 3, Padres 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Pitching the first eight innings and striking out 13 batters, Steve Carlton posted his 11th victory of the campaign as the Phillies downed the Padres, 3-1. Greg Luzinski belted a homer following a one-out walk to Mike Schmidt in the third inning and Schmidt clouted a leadoff round-tripper in the fifth frame.

Astros 7, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Cesar Cedeno went 3-for-4, including a two-run homer in the ninth inning, to pace a 16-hit attack that carried the Astros to a 7-3 triumph over the Pirates. Rafael Landestoy, Terry Puhl, Jose Cruz and Nolan Ryan each had one RBI for Houston and another run came in on a Pittsburgh error. Ryan, who was derricked after walking the leadoff batter in the seventh inning, got credit for his first road victory of the season.

Cardinals 4, Reds 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Wretched Cincinnati relief pitching enabled the Cardinals to shade the Reds, 4-3. The Reds led, 3-2, going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when Mario Soto took over the pitching chores from joe Price, who was making his major league debut. Keith Hernandez belted Soto's first pitch to deep center for a double and Ted Simmons cracked the next offering into the right field corner for another two-bagger. Simmons moved to third on an infield out and scored the decisive run on a wild pitch.
