Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, A's 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Orioles edged the A's, 3-2. The score was 2-2 when Ken Singleton opened the Birds' ninth with a single. After Eddie Murray walked, Mark Corey forced Singleton at third on a sacrifice attempt. Bob Lacey replaced Jeff Jones on the mound for the A's and pinch-hitter Lenn Sakata then hit a line-drive single to left to plate the winning marker.
Red Sox 6, Mariners 2 at Boston (night game):
Driving in three runs with a homer and single, Fred Lynn sparked the Red Sox to a 6-2 decision over the Mariners. After the Mariners took a 1-0 lead in their first turn at bat on an RBI triple by Dan Meyer, Lynn put the Sox ahead with a two-run round-tripper in the bottom of the frame. Lynn then stroked a run-scoring single in the third. The three-run Boston fourth was highlighted by a two-run single by Carl Yastrzemski.
Royals 10, Indians 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Larry Gura won his seventh straight game as the Royals copped a 10-2 decision over the Indians. K.C. blew the game open with four runs in the third inning. Quirk, Darrell Porter and John Wathan all drove in runs in a five-run eighth and two more runs scored on an error.
Yankees 5, Angels 0 at New York (night game):
Allowing only one runner to get past first base, Ron Guidry pitched a six-hitter for the Yankees in a 5-0 whitewashing of the Angels. The Yanks scored twice in the first inning on a single by Bobby Murcer, walk to Graig Nettles, RBI single by Reggie Jackson and sacrifice fly by Jim Spencer. Bobby Brown clouted a solo homer in the fourth and Nettles slammed a two-run round-tripper in the fifth.
Rangers 8, Brewers 1 at Texas (night game):
Al Oliver drove in four runs with a homer and single to pace the Rangers to an 8-1 pasting of the Brewers. Oliver singled in Texas' first run in the third inning and blasted a three-run round-tripper in the fifth. Bud Harrelson connected for a two-run circuit clout in the sixth stanza. It was the veteran shortstop's first homer in three years and only the seventh of his 14-year major league career.
[DH] Blue Jays 5, White Sox 4 (night game) / Blue Jays 3, White Sox 1 at Toronto (night game):
The Blue Jays won a doubleheader from the White Sox, 5-4 and 3-1. In the curtain raiser, the Jays were behind, 4-3, when Bob Davis led off the Toronto seventh inning with a single and, after a sacrifice, Rick Bosetti clubbed a two-run homer. The Jays opened a 2-0 first-inning lead in the second game. Alfredo Griffin singled and after two wild pitches, a walk to Roy Howell and a short wild pitch moving Howell to second, John Mayberry and Otto Velez rapped consecutive RBI singles. Mayberry's blow extended his hitting streak to a club record 17 games. Ernie Whitt blasted a solo homer in the second inning.
[DH] Braves 3, Pirates 2 (night game) / Braves 5, Pirates 4 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves swept a doubleheader from the Pirates, winning 3-2 in the lidlifter and 5-4 in the nightcap. The Braves trailed, 2-0, going into the bottom of the ninth inning of the first game, when Dale Murphy stroked a leadoff single. Successive errors by first baseman Bill Robinson and shortstop Tim Foli on balls hit by Chris Chambliss and Gary Matthews loaded the bases. One out later, Bill Nahorodny drilled a double down the left field line to plate three runs. The second game was tied, 4-4, when Murphy began the Braves' seventh with a single and reached second on a sacrifice by Mike Lum. Matthews then hit a grounder to third, but Dale Berra threw wildly into the Atlanta dugout, allowing Murphy to score the decisive tally.

The Cubs picked up a pair of tallies in the second inning on a two-run single by Ivan DeJesus. Mick Kelleher drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and DeJesus followed with a sacrifice. A single by Lenny Randle sent Kelleher to third and, after Randle stole second, Bill Buckner was issued an intentional walk. Mike Vail was hit by a pitch to force in Kelleher and Doug Bair then relieved Mario Soto on the mound for the Reds. Martin greeted the new hurler with a blast over the left field wall.
