Yankees 3, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Key hits by Bucky Dent and Reggie Jackson and air-tight relief pitching by Ron Davis enabled the Yankees to post a 3-2 triumph over the Red Sox. The Yanks jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a single by Joe Lefebvre, double by Rick Cerone and single by Dent. Jackson made it 3-0 with a homer in the third. Davis came on in the sixth and blanked the Red Sox the rest of the way to earn his fifth save.

Angels 5, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Taking advantage of Chicago misplays, the Angels posted a 5-2 triumph over the White Sox. The Angels scored three times in the first inning and twice in the second as the White Sox made two errors in each frame. Carney Lansford singled and drove in a run in each stanza. Ed Halicki, going seven innings, received credit for his first A.L. victory.

Indians 8, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
Rallying from a five-run deficit, the Indians overcame the Tigers, 8-7. The Indians trailed, 7-2, going into the sixth inning but drew to within one run on a bases-loaded homer by Bo Diaz. In the seventh a single by Jorge Orta, walk to Mike Hargrove, double by Joe Charboneau and single by Toby Harrah produced the Indians' tying and winning runs and enabled Bob Owchinko to pick up his first A.L. victory. Owchinko permitted only two hits in 4 1/3 innings of relief.

Twins 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
A single by Rick Sofield with two out in the ninth inning drove home the winning run as the Twins edged the Royals, 2-1. The game was tied, 1-1, in the ninth when Jose Morales ripped a one-out double and was replaced by pinch-runner Ken Landreaux. After a groundout, Landreaux took third on an infield single by Dave Edwards and tallied when Sofield stroked the ball safely into left field.

Brewers 5, A's 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Robin Yount crashed two homers and a double and Gorman Thomas and Mark Brouhard each added a round-tripper to power the Brewers to a 5-2 victory over the A's. Yount's solo shots came in the third and fifth innings. Thomas' blast snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth and Brouhard connected in the eighth. Mosse Haas scattered nine hits in going the route for his ninth win of the season.

Mariners 6, Rangers 5 at Seattle (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Bruce Bochte in the ninth inning drove in two runs and lifted the Mariners to a 6-5 triumph over the Rangers. The Mariners were behind, 5-4, in the ninth when Bob Stinson drew a one-out walk. Julio Cruz followed with a single. Jim Kern was replaced on the mound by Danny Darwin, who walked Juan Beniquez to load the bases and was promptly derricked in favor of Sparky Lyle. The new reliever was greeted by Bochte's blow.

Orioles 2, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (day game):
Jim Palmer allowed just four hits in 8 2/3 innings and Ken Singleton hit a homer to pace the Orioles to a 2-0 victory over the Blue Jays. After Singleton's blast in the fourth, the Orioles picked up another run in the seventh on a double by Doug DeCinces and single by Rick Dempsey.

Braves 13, Astros 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Jeff Burroughs drove in four runs with a homer and double and Bob Horner contributed three RBIs as the Braves enjoyed a 13-4 rout of the Astros. With the game tied, 2-2, and two out in the fifth inning, Atlanta tallied five runs -- two on a single by Horner and three on Burrough's round-tripper. The Braves sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth and scored six more times as Chris Chambliss, Gary Matthews and Horner delivered run-scoring singles, Burroughs bashed an RBI double and Bruce Benedict hit a two-run single.

Padres 4, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Dave Winfield drove in three runs and paced the Padres to a 4-1 triumph over the Dodgers, beating Jerry Reuss, who was making his first appearance since tossing a no-hitter. Gene Richards led off the Padres' first inning with a walk, advanced to third on an error by second baseman Pedro Guerrero and scored on a groundout by Winfield. With one out in the third, Richards singled, stole second and came home when shortstop Bill Russell threw wildly to first on a grounder by Jerry Mumphrey. Winfield then followed with a homer.

Phillies 5, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
A single by Pete Rose was the key hit as the Phillies scored two runs in the 11th inning and defeated the Expos, 5-4. The score was 3-3 when Keith Moreland led off the Phils' 11th with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Lonnie Smith,. who was forced at second by Greg Gross. One out later, pinch-hitter Bob Boone singled and Rose then followed with a single that plated Gross. After the play at the plate on Gross, Montreal third baseman Larry Parrish failed to hold a throw from catcher Gary Carter and Boone raced home. Warren Cromartie hit a bases-empty homer for the Expos in the bottom of the 11th.

Cubs 4, Mets 3 at New York (night game):
A three-run homer by Lenny Randle and scoreless relief pitching by Bruce Sutter carried the Cubs to a 4-3 triumph over the Mets. After the Mets had taken a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning with a three-run rally keyed by a two-run homer by Lee Mazzilli, the Cubs struck back in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Mike Vail was safe at first on an error by third baseman Elliott Maddox and, following a single by pinch-hitter Cliff Johnson, Randle lined a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall. Sutter came on with two men on base and one out in the bottom of the seventh and allowed only one hit the rest of the way to record his 18th save, tops in the majors.

Pirates 3, Cardinals 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Pushing across a run in the 10th inning, the Pirates shaded the Cardinals, 3-2. The game was tied, 2-2, when Phil Garner stroked a one-out single and went to third on a single by Steve Nicosia. Mike Easler batted for winning pitcher Grant Jackson and hit a grounder to shortstop Garry Templeton, who threw to second for a forceout, but Easler beat second baseman Ken Oberkfell's relay to first as Garner scored.

Giants 4, Reds 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Scattering six hits, Ed Whitson recorded his fifth consecutive victory, pitching the Giants pastthe Reds. 4-1. A two-run homer by Rich Murray gave the Giants a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Two more runs followed in the sixth on singles by Max Venable, Jack Clark and Milt May and a sacrifice fly by Rennie Stennett.
