Orioles 10, Red Sox 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Steve Stone gained his 10th consecutive victory and 12th of the season when the Orioles defeated the Red Sox, 10-3. Stone was lifted with a 7-3 lead after loading the bases with two out in the seventh inning. Tim Stoddard relieved, retired Carlton Fisk on a pop fly and finished to earn his 11th save.
A's 2, White Sox 0 at Chicago (day game):
The A's scored on a balk and a theft of home to defeat the White Sox, 2-0, with Brian Kingman gaining the decision in a duel with Britt Burns. Mike Heath singled in the sixth inning and Jeff Cox beat out an infield hit. Dave McKay sacrificed. After Rob Picciolo went out, Rickey Henderson walked to load the bases. Burns then balked, allowing Heath to score, and on his next pitch Cox stole home.
Yankees 11, Indians 5 at Cleveland (day game):
A grand-slam homer by Bobby Murcer, capping a seven-run outburst in the fourth inning, featured the Yankees' 11-5 victory over the Indians.
Tigers 4, Blue Jays 3 at Detroit (day game):
The Tigers, who got four-hit pitching from Dan Petry and Aurelio Lopez, gained their 13th victory in the last 15 games, defeating the Blue Jays, 4-3. The loss was the 10th in 11 games for the Jays.
Royals 5, Mariners 3 at Kansas City (night game):
With two out, pinch-hitter Hal McRae tripled and drove in two runs in the eighth inning to bring the Royals a 5-3 victory over the Mariners.
Angels 2, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Rick Miller singled twice and scored both of the Angels' runs in a 2-0 victory over the Brewers.
Rangers 4, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Bump Wills scored Mickey Rivers in the 12th inning and gave the Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Twins.
Braves 9, Padres 0 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves smashed five homers to back up the pitching of Larry McWilliams, who allowed only three hits and shut out the Padres, 9-0.
Reds 8, Astros 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Nolan Ryan became the fourth pitcher in major league history to reach the 3,000 mark in strikeouts, but the Astros' fireballer nevertheless wound up being charged with an 8-1 loss to the Reds. Ryan fanned six, bringing his career total to 3,003, putting him in a class with Walter Johnson, Gaylord Perry and Bob Gibson, who are the strikeout leaders. Charlie Leibrandt, who pitched a four-hitter for the Reds, batted in their first two runs with a single in the second inning. Dan Driessen homered in the third and Reds then sent Ryan to the showers while scoring three more runs in the fifth.
Dodgers 4, Giants 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rudy Law hit the first homer of his major league career to cap the Dodgers' scoring in a 4-0 victory as Don Sutton hurled a four-hitter for his second shutout over the Giants this season.
[DH] Mets 9, Expos 5 (night game) / Expos 6, Mets 5 at New York (night game):
The Expos, who lost the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-5, came back to beat the Mets in the second game, 6-5, for only their eighth victory in the last 21 contests. Before going into a slump, the Expos had won 10 in a row. Claudell Washington rapped four hits for the Mets in the opener and Lee Mazzilli homered in his fourth consecutive game. Warren Cromartie and John Tamargo figured in the scoring of the Expos' runs in the nightcap. Tamargo drove in two runs with an infield out and a double and also scored on a homer by Cromartie, who had three hits.
[DH] Cubs 4, Pirates 2 (day game) / Cubs 2, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
After winning the first game, 4-2, with the help of Cliff Johnson's first homer in a Chicago uniform, the Cubs also defeated the Pirates in the second game, 2-1, to complete a sweep of the doubleheader. Johnson, who came to the Cubs from the Indians June 23, hit his homer with Lenny Randle on base in the first inning. The Cubs then added their winning margin in the fifth, scoring two unearned runs on three Pirate errors.
Cardinals 1, Phillies 0 at St. Louis (day game):
George Hendrick hammered a homer in the 10th inning to carry the Cardinals to a 1-0 victory over the Phillies behind the pitching of Bob Sykes, who posted the shutout on an eight-hitter.
