Red Sox 1, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (day game):
Carl Yastrzemski doubled in the second inning, took third on a grounder by Butch Hobson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dave Stapleton to bring the Red Sox a 1-0 victory over the Orioles.

A's 5, White Sox 0 at Chicago (day game):
After suffering six straight defeats in complete games, Rick Langford pitched the A's to a 5-0 victory over the White Sox, allowing only four hits. Rickey Henderson clinched the decision with a three-run homer in the eighth inning.

Yankees 3, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Bobby Murcer, who hit a grand slam in the previous night's game, smashed a two-run homer and Joe Lefebvre provided a solo shot to power the Yankees to a 3-2 victory over the Indians.

Blue Jays 5, Tigers 3 at Detroit (day game):
The Blue Jays snapped their five-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Tigers. The Blue Jays, who had homers by Barry Bonnell and John Mayberry, added an unearned run in the fifth inning and then accounted for their winning margin in the sixth when Damaso Garcia singled, Doug Ault was safe on an error by Tigers third baseman Tom Brookens, Ernie Whitt doubled to drive in Garcia and Alfredo Griffin delivered a sacrifice fly.

Royals 5, Mariners 4 at Kansas City (night game):
After U.L. Washington and Clint Hurdle hit two-run singles in the third inning, Amos Otis doubled and scored on a single by Pete LaCock in the sixth to provide the Royals with a 5-4 victory over the Mariners.

Brewers 4, Angels 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Cecil Cooper homered with a man on base in the third inning to lift the Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the Angels. Cooper singled to drive in the Brewers' initial run in the first. Then in the third, Robin Yount was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a double by Don Money before Cooper crashed his decisive homer.

Twins 2, Rangers 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Roy Smalley slugged a two-run homer in the fourth inning and that was all Geoff Zahn needed to pitch the Twins to a 2-1 victory over the Rangers.

Braves 3, Padres 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Leading off in the Braves' half of the ninth inning, Bob Horner smashed a homer to beat the Padres, 3-2. The Braves also had an earlier homer in the game by Jeff Burroughs, while Gene Tenace hit one for the Padres.

[DH] Reds 8, Astros 6 (night game) / Reds 3, Astros 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
After scoring six runs in the first inning of the opener, the Astros fell into the doldrums and lost both ends of a twi-night doubleheader to the Reds, 8-6 and 3-2. Bruce Berenyi, making his major league debut, was kayoed by the Astros in their initial outburst, but Mario Soto then pitched 8 2/3 innings of shutout relief.

Dodgers 3, Giants 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The relief pitching of Bobby Castillo enabled the Dodgers to defeat the Giants, 3-2. Castillo took over and stifled the Giants after Bob Welch issued a pass with the bases loaded in the seventh inning. The first two runs of the game scored on homers by Reggie Smith and Milt May for a 1-1 tie. The Dodgers then decided the outcome with two runs in the sixth on a single by Vance Law, pass to Smith, single by Steve Garvey and sacrifice fly by Dusty Baker.

Mets 7, Expos 5 at New York (night game):
The Expos lost to the Mets, 7-5, suffering the seventh defeat in their last 10 contests, but still retained a first-place lead over the Phillies in the East Division. Steve Henderson smashed a two-run homer for the Mets in the second inning and added an RBI with a single when the Mets scored twice in the third.

Pirates 5, Cubs 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Bill Robinson broke a tie in the fifth inning and lifted the Pirates to a 5-4 victory over the Cubs.

Cardinals 6, Phillies 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Jim Kaat, the Cardinals' 41-year-old lefthander, scattered six hits and did not issue a pass while posting a 6-1 victory over the Phillies. After the Phils picked up their lone run in the first inning, the Cards put Kaat on the road to victory with three in their half on a pass to Bobby Bonds, double by Garry Templeton, two-run single by Keith Hernandez and double by George Hendrick.
