Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 9, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
A five-run outburst in the first inning propelled the Orioles to a 9-2 victory over the White Sox. The Orioles' runs in the opening frame were driven home with a triple by Ken Singleton and singles by Eddie Murray, Doug DeCinces and Al Bumbry. Murray, who drove in four runs during the evening, blasted a two-run homer in the second.

Royals 3, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
A homer by Willie Aikens in the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the Royals to a 3-2 triumph over the Tigers. Aikens also knocked in the first of two runs in the second with a double and, after advancing to third on a sacrifice by Amos Otis, scored on a groundout by Clint Hurdle. George Brett returned to the Royals' lineup after a month's absence and rapped a single and double.

[DH] Brewers 2, Red Sox 1 (night game) / Red Sox 7, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Dividing a doubleheader, the Brewers won the lidlifter, 2-1, and the Red Sox captured the nightcap, 7-0. The first game was tied, 1-1, going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Don Money drew a one-out walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Ed Romero. Romero advanced to second on a single by Cecil Cooper and scored the winning run on a single by Gorman Thomas. Fred Lynn drove in four runs for the Red Sox in the second game with two homers and a sacrifice fly to support the five-hit pitching of Steve Renko and Bob Stanley.

[DH] Angels 5, A's 1 (night game) / A's 5, Angels 4 at Oakland (night game):
The Angels won the first game of a doubleheader, 5-1, behind the five-hit pitching of Frank Tanana, before losing the second game to the A's, 5-4. In the opener, Carney Lansford drove in a sixth-inning run to give the Angels a 1-0 lead, and they added four more tallies in the eighth with two scoring on a homer by Don Baylor. Rick Langford scattered nine hits in a route-going performance in the nightcap. Mike Davis drove in two runs and Wayne Gross collected two hits to pace the A's attack.

Twins 12, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Jose Morales paced the Twins' 20-hit attack with a pair of three-run homers in a 12-4 thrashing of the Mariners. Morales' first round-tripper came in the first inning when the Twins scored six runs. His second was hit in the fifth.

Yankees 13, Rangers 5 at Texas (night game):
Exploding for 10 runs in the first inning, the Yankees enjoyed a 13-5 rout of the Rangers. The Yanks' runs in the first came on a two-run double by Reggie Jackson, RBI single by Oscar Gamble, bases-loaded walk to Rick Cerone, two-run single by Bucky Dent, sacrifice fly by Willie Randolph, run-scoring single by Bobby Murcer and two-run homer by Graig Nettles. Jackson blasted a two-run homer in the third and Jim Spencer added a solo round-tripper in the ninth.

Indians 7, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
Recording his sixth victory in his last seven decisions, John Denny scattered eight hits in pitching the Indians to a 7-3 decision over the Blue Jays. The Indians went ahead to stay in the third inning when Miguel Dilone, Jorge Orta and Joe Charboneau drew walks to load the bases. Ron Hassey singled home a pair of runs and Jack Brohamer followed with a single for the third tally to give Indians a 4-2 margin.

Reds 8, Braves 6 at Atlanta (night game):
A five-homer barrage carried the Reds past the Braves, 8-6. Ray Knight drilled a two-run round-tripper in the second inning and Johnny Bench added a solo shot. After a two-run blast by Dave Concepcion put the Reds ahead, 5-4, in the fifth, Dan Driessen also connected for a two-run smash in the same frame. George Foster cracked a leadoff circuit blow in the eighth.

Dodgers 4, Astros 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Pushing across two runs in the ninth inning, the Dodgers shaded the Astros, 4-3. Steve Garvey led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Derrel Thomas. One out later, Ron Cey singled and Bill Russell followed with a double that plated Thomas. Dave Smith relieved Nolan Ryan on the mound for the Astros and passed Mike Scioscia intentionally. Afterthe second out, Davey Lopes tapped a bouncer to the right of the mound. Smith elected to try for the force at home but overthrew catcher Alan Ashby as Cey crossed the plate with the winning tally.

Expos 4, Cardinals 3 at Montreal (night game):
A throwing error by third baseman Ken Reitz opened the door for three runs in the eighth inning and enabled the Expos to edge the Cardinals, 4-3. The score was 1-1 when Ron LeFlore singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Rodney Scott then singled and took second on the throw home as LeFlore reached third. After Andre Dawson was passed intentionally to load the bases, Gary Carter grounded to Reitz, who made a poor throw home as LeFlore scored. Scott scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Warren Cromartie. Larry Parrish then hit a sacrifice fly for the deciding tally. Ken Oberkfell clouted a two-run homer for the Cardinals in the ninth.

Mets 2, Pirates 0 at New York (day game):
Three-hit pitching by Pat Zachry carried the Mets to a 2-0 victory over the Pirates. The Mets scored both their runs in the second inning, starting with a homer by Lee Mazzilli. Frank Taveras followed with a single, reached third when Pirates second baseman Phil Garner failed to handle the throw from third baseman Dale Berra on a grounder by Steve Henderson, and came home on a sacrifice fly by John Stearns.

Phillies 5, Cubs 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A three-run rally in the fourth inning lifted the Phillies to a 5-3 decision over the Cubs. The Phils, who were trailing, 3-1, loaded the bases with none out on walks to Garry Maddox and Larry Bowa sandwiched around an error by Cubs third baseman Lenny Randle on a grounder by Manny Trillo. Bob Boone then stroked a single, driving in two runs to tie the score, and Pete Rose hit a sacrifice fly to plate the go-ahead tally. Pinch-hitter Greg Gross knocked in an insurance marker in the eighth.

Giants 9, Padres 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Pounding out 14 hits, the Giants subdued the Padres, 9-2, behind the eight-hit hurling of Bob Knepper. Larry Herndon collected three singles and a walk and scored two runs. Rennie Stennett also had three singles while scoring one run and driving in another. Rich Murray drilled a two-run triple in the third inning before leaving the game with an injured finger.
