Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 5, Orioles 4 at Chicago (night game):
A homer by Wayne Nordhagen in the seventh inning for his third RBI of the game provided the White Sox with their deciding run in a 5-4 victory over the Orioles. Nordhagen drove in one run with a double in the first and another with an infield out in the second.
Royals 7, Tigers 3 at Kansas City (night game):
George Brett, who tied the Royals' club record for doubles in one game with three on August 10, 1974, did it again with three more two-baggers in a 7-3 victory over the Tigers. The Royals also had doubles by Hal McRae, Clint Hurdle and John Wathan and a homer by Willie Wilson. The Tigers fell short in extra-base hits with doubles by Tim Corcoran and Al Cowens and homers by Champ Summers and Alan Trammell.
Brewers 7, Red Sox 6 at Milwaukee (night game):
Seeking a replacement for injured Paul Molitor, the Brewers apparently found new a leadoff man in catcher Charlie Moore, who hit four straight singles and then bunted safely on his fifth trip in a 7-6 victory over the Red Sox. Moore, who also stole a base, scored three times. Ben Oglivie drove in four runs for the Brewers, three with his 22nd homer. Cecil Cooper sent Moore home with a double in the fifth and then singled to score Moore again with what proved to be the deciding run in the sixth. Rick Burleson hit two singles, a double and three-run homer for the Red Sox. Carlton Fisk contributed a two-run homer.
A's 6, Angels 2 at Oakland (night game):
Tony Armas hit a two-run homer and Wayne Gross added two runs with a single and double, leading the A's to a 6-2 victory over the Angels. The relief pitching of Jeff Jones saved the game for the A's. Jones replaced Brian Kingman with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning and ended the Angels' threat by striking out both Joe Rudi and Bobby Grich.
Twins 6, Mariners 3 at Seattle (night game):
Ken Landreaux drove in three runs -- one with a single in the first inning and two with a homer in the eighth --to provide the margin of victory as the Twins defeated the Mariners, 6-3. The M's took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Bruce Bochte and homer by Leon Roberts, but Rick Sofield tied the score with an inside-the-park drive in the seventh. After Landreaux dissolved the deadlock, Rob Wilfong singled for an insurance tally in the ninth.
Rangers 10, Yankees 8 at Texas (night game):
The Rangers piled up 18 hits, including three each by Mickey Rivers and Buddy Bell, to outslug the Yankees, 10.8. Tom Underwood, who started for the Yankees, failed to retire a batter in the first inning as the Rangers scored five runs. Johnny Grubb knocked in one tally with a double in the second and homered with a man on base in the fourth. A single by Bump Wills scored Rivers with what proved to be the deciding run in the fifth. Richie Zisk added an insurance tally with a single in the eighth. Reggie Jackson smashed a three-run homer for the Yankees.
Blue Jays 6, Indians 3 at Toronto (night game):
Accounting for five RBIs between them, Damaso Garcia and Otto Velez batted the Blue Jays to a 6-3 victory over the Indians. Dave Stieb pitched a three-hitter and turned in his 10th complete game of the season. The Jays scored three runs in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Wayne Garland hit Bob Davis with a pitch to force in one run and Garcia singled to add a pair. After the Indians came back to tie the score, Velez hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Garcia then added a run with a single in the sixth for his third RBI of the game.
Reds 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Two-run homers by Johnny Bench and George Foster powered the Reds to a 5-3 victory over the Braves behind the pitching of Mario Soto, who was a last-minute starter in place of Frank Pastore. Bench's blast followed a single by Dan Driessen in the seventh inning and Foster's smash came after a double by Ken Griffey in the eighth. Soto was relieved with two out in ninth by Tom Hume, who gave up a run-scoring double by Glenn Hubbard before ending the game.
Dodgers 3, Astros 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
When Jerry Reuss tired after allowing only three hits in seven scoreless innings, the Dodgers were hard pressed to defeat the Astros, 3-2. Bobby Castillo, Dave Goltz and Steve Howe all pitched in relief before the game ended. The Dodgers scored an unearned run on an error by Astros third baseman Enos Cabell in the seventh inning and then decided the outcome when Steve Garvey singled and Dusty Baker homered in the eighth.
Cardinals 5, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Rallying in the ninth inning, the Cardinals scored four runs to defeat the Expos, 5-3. The Cards began their comeback with one-out singles by George Hendrick and Terry Kennedy to chase Steve Rogers. After Woodie Fryman relieved, pinch-hitter Bobby Bonds singled to load the bases. Ken Oberkfell forced Bonds as Hendrick scored. Keith Smith then batted for Silvio Martinez and doubled, driving in pinch-runner Tony Scott and Oberkfell to put the Cards ahead. An error by Ellis Valentine, who dropped a fly by Garry Templeton, allowed an extra run to score.
Pirates 4, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Hitting a homer against the Mets for the fifth time this season, Mike Easler connected with two men on base in the third inning to carry the Pirates to a 4-2 victory. Easler scored the Pirates' first run, hitting a double in the second and crossing the plate on single by Ed Ott before lashing his homer in the third following a double by Dave Parker and pass to John Milner. Lee Mazzilli was collared in five trips, ending the Mets outfielder's 18-game hitting streak.
Phillies 7, Cubs 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Pete Rose hit three doubles and Mike Schmidt rapped two triples among 14 hits as the Phillies defeated the Cubs, 7-2, to move into a first-place tie with the Expos in the East Division. The Cubs fell into the cellar behind the Cardinals. Bob Walk, who pitched 6 2/3 innings, gained his fifth straight victory with relief assistance from Ron Reed.
Giants 7, Padres 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Rennie Stennett and Johnnie LeMaster batted in five runs between them to lead the Giants to a 7-3 victory over the Padres. LeMaster singled to drive in two of the Giants' three runs in the first inning. Stennett plated a pair with a single in the second and accounted for his third RBI of the game with another single in the fourth.
