Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Royals 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Steve Stone received credit for his 11th straight victory, bringing his record to 13-3, when the Orioles defeated the Royals, 3-1. Stone allowed only three hits but walked six and needed relief help from Tippy Martinez and Tim Stoddard. Eddie Murray hit a two-run double in support of Stone and John Lowenstein connected for his first homer of the season.

Red Sox 9, Tigers 3 at Boston (night game):
Batting only .201 going into the game, Dwight Evans broke loose with four hits in four trips, including a three-run homer, to help the Red Sox gain a 9-3 victory over the Tigers.

A's 5, Angels 4 at California (night game):
Using their speed, the A's scored two runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Angels, 5-4. Rickey Henderson led off the stanza with a single and stole second. Dwayne Murphy beat out a bunt, sending Henderson to third in position to score on an infield out by Dave Revering. Wayne Gross then singled to drive in Murphy.

Yankees 8, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
Shutting out the White Sox for the third straight time this season, Tommy John breezed to an 8-0 victory as the Yankees backed their lefthander with an 18-hit attack. Rick Cerone and Bucky Dent each went 4-for-5. The Yankees, after leading only 1-0, broke the game apart with seven runs in the ninth inning including a bases-loaded triple by Willie Randolph. John's shutout was his third in a row and fifth of the year.

Twins 8, Mariners 3 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins tied their club record for double plays with five, all of which ended innings, during the course of an 8-3 victory over the Mariners. Dave Edwards hit a two-run homer in batting support of Geoff Zahn, who had a shutout in the works until chased in the ninth inning.

Indians 9, Rangers 8 at Texas (night game):
Two doubles by Gary Alexander, who drove in three runs, highlighted the Indians' 13-hit attack in a 9-8 victory over the Rangers. The Indians had a comfortable 9-2 lead before the Rangers came up with a two-run double by Bump Wills and two-run triple by Al Oliver in the seventh inning. The Rangers threatened again in the ninth, scoring two more runs before Victor Cruz saved the game for the Indians.

Brewers 9, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto (day game):
The Brewers, who had lost their first five meetings with Toronto this season, struck back with a seven-run explosion in the second inning to defeat the Blue Jays, 9-2. The Brewers put together a walk and seven hits for their scoring while sending 11 men to bat in their big inning.

[DH] Giants 7, Reds 4 (night game) / Giants 10, Reds 7 at Cincinnati (night game):
After Jack Clark hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to account for a 7-4 victory in the opener, Clark and Darrell Evans homered in succession in the sixth inning of the nightcap as the Giants won, 10-7, to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Reds. George Foster had four hits for the Reds in the second game, including two homers, and drove in five runs. Johnny Bench hit the 313th homer of his career as a catcher, tying Yogi Berra for the all-time major league lead among receivers. In addition to the blows by Clark and Evans, the Giants had a homer by Johnnie LeMaster in the fifth inning and two-run smash by Milt May that clinched the decision in the ninth.

Astros 9, Braves 5 at Houston (night game):
Jose Cruz drove in two runs with a double in the first inning and another run with a single in the second to start the Astros off to a 9-5 victory over the Braves. After Cruz' single, Cesar Cedeno batted in two runs with a triple. Dave Bergman also accounted for two RBIs with a single in the fifth.

[DH] Expos 10, Cubs 2 (night game) / Cubs 8, Expos 6 at Montreal (night game):
A grand slam by Cliff Johnson in the seventh inning lifted the Cubs to an 8-6 victory in a split of a twi-night doubleheader with the Expos, who won the first game, 10-2. Ellis Valentine and Gary Carter drove in three runs apiece for the Expos in the lidlifter. In the nightcap, the Cubs were trailing, 6-3, going into the seventh inning when Mike O'Berry singled and Jesus Figueroa walked to chase Bill Lee, who was making his first appearance since June 6. Stan Bahnsen relieved and yielded a single to Ivan DeJesus. The Expos' reliever retired the next two batters before Johnson brought victory to the Cubs with his homer.

Cardinals 8, Mets 6 at New York (day game):
After trailing, 6-1, the Cardinals came back to tie the score and then broke away with two runs in the 12th inning to defeat the Mets, 8-6. Garry Templeton and Ted Simmons hit homers for the Cards, who pulled even with two runs in the ninth on an error, a triple by Templeton and sacrifice fly by Leon Durham. Then in the 12th, Terry Kennedy walked and scored the tie-breaking run on a triple by Ken Oberkfell, who added an extra tally on a single by Mike Ramsey.

Phillies 5, Pirates 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies moved ahead of the Expos into first place in the East Division when a single by Bob Boone scored Garry Maddox with one out in the ninth inning and produced a 5-4 victory over the Pirates. Maddox and Manny Trillo led off with singles and Larry Bowa sacrificed. With first base open, the Pirates decided to pitch to Boone, rather than pass him intentionally to load the bases. Boone wrecked the decision with his single off Kent Tekulve.

Padres 3, Dodgers 2 at San Diego (night game):
Beating themselves, the Dodgers lost to the Padres, 3-2, in 12 innings. With one out, Von Joshua hit a line drive to center field where Rudy Law unwisely attempted a shoestring catch. The ball got past him for a triple. After an intentional pass to Gene Richards, Joe Beckwith threw a wild pitch, allowing Joshua to score the Padres' winning run.
